Fill in the Blank Season 1: Lairs #8
« on: June 13, 2020, 10:59:48 PM »
Welcome to Fill in the Blank Season 1: Lairs!

Each week I'll post the collector's information for one of the cards in the set's card-list.

Contestants are free to create whatever card they see fit for that slot in the card-list, keeping in mind the surrounding cards. As the contest progresses, the card-list will become more and more defined, guiding the contestants' choices.

The theme of our set is Lairs! You're free to interpret this however you want.

Not every card has to fit the theme, of course, but it's something to keep in mind when coming up with entries.

Each week a poll will go up for the previous week's entries. Simply vote for one you like the most. In the event of a tie, I'll let a random result generator make the decision.

Last week's winner...
TelTura wins with his [Gondor] condition, Sheltered Hollow! Check out facebook, the LotR subreddit, or the discord page (pm for link) for a bonus!

Last week's entries to pick from for Card #16...

Quote from: Entry #1
[6] •Úlairë Attëa, Khamûl [Raider]
Minion • Nazgûl
Strength 12 Vitality 3 Site 3
Fierce. Ambush [1]. To play, spot an Easterling.
Each time Úlairë Attëa wins a skirmish, you may exert him and spot an Easterling to add a burden (or 2 burdens if you can spot 7 companions).

Designer's notes:
Obviously, we need some minions in this set. The idea with this Nazgûl is similar to the Rohan Aragorn: same character, different culture. I thought we could spice things up with Attea's orgins (or you could say Lair). The 2 burden punishment is to make up for the high cost of this minion.

Quote from: Entry #2
[1] •Orkish Lair [Orc]
Condition • Support Area
To play, exert 2 Orcs.
Shadow: Play an Orc stacked here.
Regroup: If there are 3 or fewer cards stacked here, remove [1] to stack an Orc from hand or from play here.
"...broken rock and blasted earth, the vomit of the maggot-folk of Mordor..."

Designer's notes:
Tried to inject some "Lair-y-ness" into the set with a truly generic Orkish card. Dunno if the balance is quite right but there ya go.

Quote from: Entry #3
(0) Orkish Whip [Orc]
Possession • Hand Weapon
Strength +1
Bearer must be an Orc.
Bearer is a lurker.
Shadow: Exert another Orc to add [1] or draw a card.
"'Where there's a whip there's a will, my slugs. Hold up!'"

Designer's notes:
Can give the useful lurker keyword to the likes of Archer Commander, Guard Commander, Gorbag CC or Advance Captain, and as a 3-card combo (along with bearer and at least a second Orc) can turn extra vitality into cards or twilight to deploy your Swarm / Beatdown / Whatever.

Quote from: Entry #4
[2] •Called to His Service [Raider]
Condition • Support Area
When you play this condition, you may spot a [Raider] Man to add a burden.
At the start of the assignment phase, the Free Peoples player may discard this condition to prevent a minion from being assigned to a skirmish until the regroup phase.
"'They have passed on to the Black Gate; but more may follow. Always more people coming to Mordor. One day all the peoples will be inside.'"

Designer's notes:
It's essentially a 'unique' event, while also constraining its use to Easterling corruption shadows rather than Easterling Captain-focused shadows.

This week's contest is...
Card #3!

This card can be any of the following cultures, but I think we all know what's coming haha  :hey:

  • A [Dunland] card (after Stronghold of the Adorn River)
  • A [Dwarven] card
  • An [Elven] card
  • A [Gandalf] card
  • A [Gollum] card (before Sméagol Lied)

Closing date: June 20th. Good luck!

[2] •Tale of the Dragon's Lair [Dwarven]
Condition • Support Area
Tale. When you play this condition, place a [Dwarven] token for each of these characters you can spot: Bilbo, Gandalf, Brand.
Skirmish: Remove a [Dwarven] token here to make a character damage +2.
"I am fire, I am... death!"

Designer's Notes: The nature of this card gives damage bonuses without a full-on Dwarf deck so you could use Uri or Gloin (even though Gloin is awful) in a deck. To make up for the fact that it requires a very specific deck, it provides a damage +2 bonus.

Why you would want this card:
1. Fits the theme with lairs.
2. Does something with multi culture Dwarves other than using Gimli.
3. You feel Dwarves are overpowered in set 9 and you want to see what they could be used for other than the infamous Dwarf deck.

Actually, I just want a Movie block Dwarven axe that doesn't discard the top card of the other player's draw deck... Sick of it!

The way things have evolved, I believe, is putting the representation of FP heroes and deeds regarding "Lairs" in a very tight spot. I mean, during the late 3rd Age Elves fought very little and Men battled in open fields, while were almost exclusively Dwarves and Gandalf who sneaked into or assailed the Enemy's lairs: the Balrog's resurgence, the War of the Dwarves and Dragons, the War of the Dwarves and Orcs (clearing every Misty Mountains den for Azog's head), Gandalf's two searches into Dol Guldur, Thorin's Quest, the Battle of Dol Guldur, Balin's colony in Moria, the Battle of the Peak... and for those cultures we have only 2 card slots left. :-k

Still, we might cheat a little and increase that count to 4 by using the slots #24 and #25 for Premium starter deck [Gandalf] / [Dwarven] companions; Gandalf and Balin would be my choice. Then slots #3 and #4 would be open for events, items, conditions or more characters, allowing for a much deeper representation.

As a stubborn Dwarf myself, I'm not asking for your permission to do so but only for your votes in those specific slots of the set. ;)

[3] •Durin's Axe, Omen of Fortune [Dwarven]   (Repost)
Artifact • Hand Weapon
Strength +3  Vitality +1
Bearer must be Balin. He is damage +2.
While Balin is skirmishing, wounds may not be limited, negated or prevented.
Regroup: If you cannot spot a minion, add 3 threats to liberate a site.
"'He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, / And saw a crown of stars appear...'"

Being alphabetically after Balin, he then would have no other room for inclusion but slots #24 and #25. My version of Balin will be a str 7 vit 3 wise leader with no fixed keywords but with skills to help Dwarves in aspects Decipher made them (unfairly) too weak.

Durin's Heir is right, with the exception of alphabetical order, slots #24 and #25 should be used for premiums/sites.

I don't have any problems with allowing premium characters into the final two slots.

I have a question. When we get go the sites do you want us voting on Fellowship sites, Towers sites, King sites, or "Shadows" sites? Or do you want us voting on any ones we want? (Asking now in case any cards reference the sites)

If we end up with 9 4 sites, that's the will of the contest.

Also, it'd probably be simpler to not worry about site arrangement during the contest. If we end up with 2 or more sites we could just arrange them manually afterwards?

(0) •Dared to Pass the Doors [Dwarven]
Condition • Support Area
Tale.
Each Dwarf is strength -1 for each companion in the dead pile.
Fellowship: Discard a companion from hand to make each Dwarf companion strength +3 and damage +1 for each companion in the dead pile until the regroup phase.
"'But now we spoke of it again with longing, and yet with dread....'"

----

I wanted to capture the despair of having lost people (such as Balin), countered temporarily by telling stories about them or otherwise 'remembering' them, represented here by discarding the spare companion cards.

[3] •Balin, Lord of Moria [Dwarven]
Ally • Home 4 & 5 • Dwarf
Strength: 6
Vitality: 4
Damage +1. To play, spot 3 Dwarves.
Each time you discard a card from the top of your draw deck, you may exert Balin to take that card into hand from your discard pile.
Discard Balin if you spot 2 or more Dwarves in the dead pile.

Meant to synergize with cards like Realm of Dwarrowdelf which cannibalize your own draw deck. Balin makes sure you keep all the valuable stuff. Thematically this Balin exists in a "what if Moria didn't fall again?" design space, so I added a bit where Balin self-defeats if enough Dwarves have died.
The to-play requirement is there to prevent Balin from being splashed, since in a deck with no other Dwarves his discard penalty is negated, and I want Balin to work with the "delving" mechanic of Dwarves in Fellowship block.

[2] A Horseman in the Night [Dwarven]
Event • Response
If an opponent plays a minion, spot 2 [Dwarven] companions and choose an opponent who may exhaust an unbound companion (or discard an exhausted companion) to place that minion on top of its owner's draw deck.
'"The time of my thought is my own to spend," answered Dáin.
"For the present," said he, and rode into the darkness."

I'm now removing my repost of Durin's Axe, and will post this one instead.

[2]Book of Mazarbul, Record of Fortunes [Dwarven]
Possession • Support Area
Each time a Dwarf wins a skirmish, you may draw a card.
Each time a Dwarf loses a skirmish, you may place a [Dwarven] card from your discard pile beneath your draw deck.
Each time a Dwarf is killed, add a burden.
"'Balin is now lord of Moria.'"

My cards regarding Balin's Colony are meant to be in present time, so it's not a tale.
