Are allies (Tom Bombadil) considered unbound, or are they neither ring-bound nor unbound?

I suppose they're unbound, but I'm not sure there's any card that refers to "unbound ally", it should always be "unbound companion".

I was asking because of Escape. It would give Bombadil enough vitality to cancel at site 9, if you could play it on him.

From the CR 4.0:

"unbound
Only companions can be unbound (not
allies or minions)."

Darn it. That is too bad. Welp, I think that means there is no way to use Tom Bombadil at site 8.

Think about what counting hobbit allies as "unbound hobbits" would do in an Ent deck.

I just saw this and struck me as odd. Tom is not even a hobbit so who cares if he is unbound :-)
