Silver Linings
« on: December 24, 2020, 11:12:45 AM »
2020 was a miserable year for a lot of people. I've found myself struggling with a feeling of survivor's guilt any time something even slightly good has happened to me. I hope others haven't shared my anxieties.

In the spirit of this year closing, perhaps you might answer with a few good things that happened to you in 2020? I'll respond as well if this gets any traction.

Hopefully you are safe and healthy and soon, vaccinated. Best,
-wtk

My wife's next assignment changed.  It still advances her career, and it's also:
-much closer to our families (a couple states instead of across the country)
-much better career options for me
-a beautiful place with year-round outdoor recreation
-3 whole years in the same place

My family flew over to visit my grandparents for Christmas, and it was such a great experience. Earlier this year we also drove over to them, and stayed there for about 3 months.

Working from home has been a very nice change with many positive side-effects (Gemp isn't blocked here!), definitely thinking about making it permanent. My work hours have become flexible and my commute is nothing, so I'm getting a lot of time back to do more of the things I want/need to do. Most prominently is that I'm enjoying the time with the family, even if I miss a few work buddies. Keeping up with people had to become more deliberate, so in some ways it was more meaningful. Got a record player last year for Christmas, which has been highly impractical and enjoyable -- even moreso now that I've had more opportunities to use it. We've been making the best of things, which in itself has been a silver lining much of the time for me.
