GW Elfball Variant (IRL)
« on: January 30, 2009, 09:19:25 AM »
So, I got interested in the Nettle Sentinel / Heritage Druid Combo. I looked around a little bit for decks, and I found some entertaining combos. However, a lot of stuff is out of my price range (or I just don't have it right now) so here's what I came up with.

Lands (21):
10 Forest
6 Plains
2 Mutavault
2 Murmuring Bosk (I lack any other G/W land, they'll get replaced)
1 Mosswort Bridge (Not sure if it's worthwhile, but I sort of like it)

Creatures (30):
3 Nettle Sentinel
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Heritage Druid
4 Imperious Perfect
4 Elvish Harbinger
2 Mirror Entity
4 Ranger of Eos
2 Nath's Elite
3 Skullmulcher

Other Cards (9):
4 Oblivion Ring
4 Elvish Promenade
1 Hurricane

I'm uncertain on what my win condition should be - the decks I saw either used Hurricane to win or a Skullmulcher swing. I like Nath's Elite or Mirror Entity more - mana shouldn't be an issue. I also like the look of Altar Golem, but fear he may be too slow.

I haven't been around competitive formats much lately, so I'm not sure how this would fare. Advice appreciated.

I've actually played against this, and it can get quite nasty, I actually had to board OUT my Thoughtseizes because I really couldn't afford the loss of life, as well as mulligan hands with too many painful colored mana sources.
There's a sorcery that makes 3 elves that has reinforce 3, I think it's worh inclusion. Also, go for a full set of Sentinels. I'd lose the Harbingers, too slow, and pack Wil-Leaf Cavaliers, allows for applying pressure earlier on. I don't like Nath's Elite very much, and I'm not sure what would Ranger of Eos be really good for, I think you could stick with 2, tops, and either pack Loxodon Warhammer as a win condition, or Primal Rage (or even both). The green spell that costs (2/G)(2/G)(2/G) is also nice, gives you a removal of sorts. Wolfskull Shaman comes to mind as well, and Bramblewood Paragon is a must. Last, I think you don't really neew the Mossworth Bridge, I think it's not worth it. But shouldn't you lose the white and consider playing Quillspike combo instead?

I like to have either Eos or Harbinger because they set the combo. Especially Eos, because he's definite Wrath help.

The quillspike combo seems a little too removable to me.

Cavaliers sounds good, and so does that sorcery. Thoughts on Wilt-Leaf Liege?

Pretty good, but more of a metagame card. I've been using him in my monowhite Kithkin decks due to a large number of Blightnings, it's SWEET to drop a pair of those for free! :D As I said, I'd keep 2 Rangers, and probably 1 Harbinger.

What about Mercy Killing? It's awesome with Skullmulcher - Devour creatures, draw cards, then get creatures back.

Risky trade. You do that, they Infest, you're toast. I think Bramblewood Paragon would most likely be your best way to go aggro quicker.

I just realized how much I love Mirror entity - it lets you go off a turn earlier by using your generated elf tokens to pump whatever creatures you have, and if one of them hits... it's GG.

So, all things considered, Felipe, what would you drop, and for what?

1 Mosswort Bridge (Not sure if it's worthwhile, depends on what playtesting tells you)
4 Elvish Harbinger
2 Ranger of Eos
2 Nath's Elite
3 Skullmulcher
1 Oblivion Ring
1 Elvish Promenade

For starters. I'd pack in:
4 Bramblewood Paragon
1 Nettle Sentinel
3 Elf-making sorcery that I forgot the name (with reinforce 3)
4 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers
Probably 22 lands.
Also, I'd probably go and lose Mutavault for Treetop Village, that alone should net you a HUGE trade.

I disagree on Ranger of Eos. Ranger of Eos can bounceback quick from wrath or set up the combo faster. I would pack all 4 copies.

If you need to cast it to get the combo done, you're already toast. If not, than 2-3 copies so you can have 1 in hand for post-wrath situation ismore than enough. The idea is to put enough pressure to not need to dump the whole hand down anyway.

I played this deck in-between matches at the Conflux pre-release today. I played 4 different decks... Weenie, Esper, I think Naya (I sort of went off turn 3 or 4, he didn't get to play much...), and a 5-color control. I lost to the control 2 of 2 games (freaking Wrath of God... the guy played 3 in one game...) but besides that got pretty solid wins, although they were good matchups for me.

So, I really need some good anti-control sideboard stuff...

I'd consider the white Memory Lapse from Conflux, Guttural Response and the white enchantment that prevents non-combat damage to your guys, saves you from Firespouts and Volcanic Fallouts.
