My wife got tickets for a showing tonight. I'm headed there straight from work. Awfully excited (even wearing my fedora to the event), but I'm not expecting it to live up to my lofty expectations. Just as long as I'm entertained and left feeling like it was the same ol' Indy, I'll be content.

Did better than I expected on Rotten Tomatoes: 80%. Not bad. Debating whether to see it now or hold off until it is released on DVD.

Well, I said I'd be content if I was entertained (I was) and felt like it was the same old Henry "Indiana" Jones (and I did). There are many moments where I felt like I was right back in my childhood with an old friend, whips cracking and cars chasing and explosions...uh...exploding. :roll: It's when it tried to make statements about the period (late 50s instead of the pre-WWII era) that I think it fell flat, and at times when it tried to explain (and show) the source of the crystaline cranium referenced in the title. But even so, those moments made sense and didn't make the movie bad, just...different. Without going into too much detail, Indy has always chased mythical and mystical artifacts (Ark of the Covenant, Sankara Stones, Holy Grail), so I guess the artifact and all they chose for this film was the next natural step, especially considering the time period. All the same, it gave it a very different feeling.

But it's still Indiana Jones, and I still had a good time, and it still felt familiar. Let me put it this way....

I grew up on the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. The newer Star Wars trilogy that was released within the last few years were good movies in their own right, but I still seperate them in my mind from the originals. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, however, I am still able to connect to the originals in my head. It's just one more adventure with the same old Indy. Does that make any sense?

In short: I'd recommend seeing it. Keep your mind open and don't expect it to be bad or good, and you should be left feeling like you had some good, clean fun with an old(er) friend.

Well, having seen it yesterday...

It was good, but not great. I would've preferred it wasn't aliens, just straight up mystical artifact.
Probably doesn't help that I already saw an episode of SG1 with the Crystal Skull legend being related to inter-dimensional aliens.... And the Tarzan bit was annoying.

Still. I enjoyed it.

I liked the end, where Indy takes his fedora away from LaBouf. I was worried that they'd be passing the torch, as it were, and I had that exact scene in my mind, worrying over it: "oh, no... they're gonna give the hat to junior at the end of the movie... oh no, they're gonna give the hat...." Nothing against LaBouf (is that even how his name is spelled?) but I'm not too interested in seeing him running around playing Indy Jones Jr. Nice little touch at the end there... "Gimme my hat, you stupid kid. You ain't taking over yet!" :P

Heck, if it was a great movie, that'd be sorta weird. I mean, Raiders was, IMHO, a great movie. The other two... well, I liked them a lot, but I wouldn't classify them as "greats." If 4 was a "great" or some sorta oscar-worthy deep philosophical movie, not some Indy popcorn flick, that would uncharacteristically overshadow the others, IMO.

Right. Indiana Jones films aren't supposed to be great cinema that wins all kind of Oscars and such...they're supposed to be FUN. They're films that you let you leave the world behind for two hours and just really enjoy yourself. In that sense, this film comes through in spades. I certainly enjoyed it more than Temple of Doom (though that had its moments, certainly), and I'd probably put it on par with Last Crusade. Nothing can top Raiders, though, which IS great cinema almost in spite of itself, thanks partly to being just a great film and partly to being (as the first Indy film) so revolutionary.

As for the Tarzan thing...yeah, way too hokey, even for an Indiana Jones film. At least it was the exception rather than the norm. :roll:

Unfortunately, Drake, I hear that Spielberg wants to do two more Indy films...both with Mutt as the star and Indy playing sort of the Henry Jones Sr. (Sean Connery) role from Last Crusade. I GUESS it might be alright, but to see Indy in a mere supporting role would be sacrilege.
