9/11 is equal in magnitude to Princess Diana? Okay. While I can see how the original joke might be offensive to some, a 9/11 should be offensive to all. Since British folks died on 9/11 too and in my book were just as important as the royalty. All in all death should not be a joke I suppose. Whether its UK royalty, US firefighters, or whoever lets be a little smarter about things folks.

Come on, you just contradicted your own point by offending all American "Conservatives". Princess Diana's death meant an aweful lot more than just the death of a person just as 9/11 means a lot more than the deaths of 2,998 people. It was more about the effect it had on the country. You would understand if you were British.

While I admit I don't understand the importance of her death in particular, I agree that the joke was of bad taste. At the same time it wasn't meant to offend. Whereas I feel that the comments following the 'joke' were done in retaliation and out of the same bad line of thought. We all need to be sensitive to things and also to be educated about things.

What I'm afraid of is your last statement: I'd understand if were British. I'm not and won't ever be British and I'm not bashing you that are. I'm American out of random chance of birth and have not been exposed to British culture. Please use these circumstances as an opportunity to educate us on your customs, thoughts, and culture. We'd appreciate it, I would! None should rush to be offended nor to offend. The joke was meant to be funny, it wasn't funny to some -- so explain why, don't just say he's a jerk and insinuate another offensive joke about 9/11. Thats not going to help. Americans don't 'get' royalty, we have movie stars and politicians -- but you and I both know British royalty is different than those people, tell us why! Why divide us into groups based on country or politics. We're geeks playing card games and that commonality should give us a common respect where from we can understand other aspects of life.

OK, apparently people aren't taking this well.  I admit that the text that I posted has two meanings; one of indifferent humor, the other of very serious realizations.  Please understand both.  If I have offended anyone, I won't object to a mod deleting this post.

Erm, to be fair, he wasn't calling all Americans conservative. He was calling Celebrimbor conservative. And making a joke out of the fact that CBB's post was offensive in this way:

1. CBB is using the circumstances around Diana's death as an example of globalization.
2. turin08 (understandably) is upset by the nature of the comment, as it makes light of a British national tragedy.
3. Thus, the fact that the tragedy is important to the British, but is made light of by others, exemplifies Nationalism as a predominant state of the globe, as opposed to globalism.

Honestly, I think CBB's "offense" consists of nothing more than entirely accidental insensitivity. For the record, as far as turin being offended, it seems reasonable to me.

Again, remember that due to the still existent nationalistic nature of world society, we're divided into nations. What may be a big deal for some people isn't for others. Whether this is right or not is entirely irrelevant ("should be" and "are" aren't always the same thing).

I don't think the thread needs deleted, so long as you guys can peacefully work stuff out. Better that you come to a resolution than that we "sweep it under the rug" as it were.

On the other hand, if CBB insists on insulting Brits (I doubt that will happen) or turin insists on being insulted (ditto on the doubts) then we might have a problem.

CB obviously had no idea he was touching a nerve, which I found ironic considering the purpose of his post...

turin had a right to be offended, but CB didn't realize what exactly he was messing with, so I think perhaps you can grant a bit of leeway.

I contradicted nothing. My point was not that he was offensive, my point was the irony.

And I wasn't generalizing, I was just identifying a prevalent thought process of a certain political party. You may be the exception.

And ha, I think I've made all conservatives ticked off at me. They can't handle one of their own pointing out all their problems.
