valiant-alliance
« on: April 03, 2009, 03:04:32 PM »
so most people agree that the Valiant keyword could have been great, but was never developed to its full potential. so i was thinking the other day and thought it would be cool if they had also used the valiant keyword to develop the alliance between rohan and gondor. for instance, cards with texts like: spot 3 valiant Men to make a Gondor companion strength +2 and defender +1 until the regroup phase.

that was just off the top of my head, but i think the idea could be really good, and make for some really fun and dynamic gameplay.

what do you think?
any ideas of your own?

Great idea! It would really unify Gondor and Rohan. Got any DCs? You could also make it useful for the shadow side, too. Something like if you can spot a [Gondor] man and a [Rohan] man and there is no valiant [Rohan] man in play, the shadow player has initiative regardless of the amount of cards in the free peoples player's hand until the start of the regroup phase.

Well, as I've ranted about previously, I think all of those unloaded keywords were a waste of space when they were confined to a single culture (like valiant, ranger, knight, southron, corsair, besieger, tracker etc.) because then they don't add any strategies to the game, they just make for narrow deckbuilding. Whereas, once you throw them around you could have a lot of scope to make a multicultural trakcer deck, for example, or in this case, a valiant deck. There's no reason Elves and Dwarves and Gandalf can't be valiant, for example. I'd throw it everywhere, then it has a meaning - it becomes like creature types in MTG (where you can build colour-orientated decks, or you can take a sideways look at the cards and build tribal decks like an elemental or giant deck).

yeah, or even if it companions of other cultures weren't valiant, you could have [Gondor] companions get strength/damage/defender/etc bonuses for spotting valiant men. such as:

[3] •Faramir, Valiant Captain [Gondor]
Companion • Man
Strength: 7
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
While you can spot a Eowyn and she is valiant, Faramir is defender +1.
While you can spot 2 valiant Men, Faramir is strength +2.
While you can spot 3 valiant Men, Faramir may not be overwhelmed unless his strength is tripled.
Faramir was very valiant, and his valiancy was renowned throughout the land, and all the valiant valiants, were envious of his valiant feats of valiancy.

the serious part of the dc is good, as is the funny part.  Knight should be thrown around! and there should be a dol amroth culture too ;)

Great...There should also be a Faramir, Leader of the Charge! Sounds very valiant to me!
