Grixis Control
« on: June 25, 2009, 10:17:22 AM »
Sorry this won't be in MtG Workstation format like you guys enjoy... and it's gonna be one of 3-4 decks I post today. I'm still trying to work out what to run at FNM. I've been getting thrashed lately.

Lands
4 Crumbling Necropolis
4 Terramorphic Expanse
6 Swamp
5 Island
5 Mountain

Creatures
4 "Heck"'s Thunder  :P
4 Sedraxis Specter
4 Mulldrifter
4 Shriekmaw
2 Thraximundar

Spells
4 Agony Warp
4 Terminate
4 Soul Manipulation
3 Infest
2 Cruel Ultimatum
1 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

I'm not sure about the sideboard yet. Probably Volcanic Fallout vs. Infest (depending on matchup), maybe thoughtseize. Guttural Response, maybe. People also tell me I should be playing Broken Ambitions or Cancel vs. Soul Manipulation, but... I'm not so sure about that. Maybe another board thing. I guess I might be too creature-focused right now.

Thoughts?

Maybe you guys can find a bard and have your story of heroic Balrog proximity put into verse.

First of all, I like this format better, to be honest. Second, I'm not sure what you're aiming at, but I'm guessing control (hence, the name), so Heck's Thunder doesn't fit. It's an aggro card. And Thraximundar costs, like a million. I'd consider running Anathemancer (if people play with nonbasic in your meta) and maindeck Volcanic Fallout over Infest. Shambling Remains can also be good. I'd probably go for the slower start (for aggro strategies anyway) and then pick it up, maindecking Thoughtseize to gain some tempo as well as to force through late game spells. I also think you have an awful lot Shriekmaws.

I originally liked #$&*@!'s Thunder as more of a finisher - but it has become a bit of a dead card in some games. Thrax does cost "like a million" but so does the Ultimatum - and though the Ultimatum is definitely better, if my control is working Thrax often just does more damage.

For my meta, I'd probably board Anathemancer. Shambling remains < Thunder, IMO, though I probably won't run either.

I like Infest because a lot of decks around here use Dauntless Escort. True, Fallout is uncounterable, but Infest is unpreventable. Besides, I've had people use Thought Hemorrhage targeting Volcanic Fallout before I even played one - just because my deck was part red. I'd start with Infest main. I guess it's a meta issue, for now, though...

Okay, so do you have any spare Thoughtseize?  :P

Not really, I might have Meddling Mages for your other deck, though. :P But I do have some copies of Duress, which is coming back in M10. :D
