Would there be interest for ... ?
« on: November 06, 2009, 12:45:27 AM »
Hey guys. I was wondering if there would be interest for a LoTR program allowing playing against other people and also against AI. I was inspired by Decipher's LoTR tutorial, even though I have never played while the game was still in production. I am aware that there are programs which allow that at the moment. However I want to incorporate the following features:

- Rules enforcing;
- A.I.;

It's an ambitious project, as programming is only a hobby for me, so I have no idea how far I will get and whether I will have the energy and desire to finish it at all. I have already started considering the design and programming. Both the client and the server will be in ActionScript 3.0, so, if anyone knows that I might make the project open source. I will also try to keep all copyrighted data off the server in order to avoid legal issues.

So, feel free to express your support, or to discourage me from my idea ... :)

I think A.Is would be fantastic... they could even be used for playtesting new cards. :-k

This is exactly what LOTR needs to get going again. If you can do it i think it would be fantastic.

Is there anyone out there that caan create a program for making dream cards - using templates? The templates might have to be made by editing existing cards.

What does A.I. mean?

AI would be awesome, haha.

Ah, yes. And holographic 3D conception with animations from the movies would be great too. (NO SARCASM).

AI doesn't imply something got knows how complicated (as in the movie AI for example). It's just used to denote a computer simulated opponent. It may even be very dumb, playing cards randomly, and still be called AI. I have created AIs for logic games - Othelo (aka Reversi) and Connect 4, however I think for a game like LoTR TCG it will be more difficult, as the rules and game elements are more numerous.
Anyway, at the moment I am just probing the grounds, trying some stuff to get an idea what would be needed in terms of coding.

There are already a few programs out there that play LotR vs. other people (SdA, GCCG, Lackey)...

I don't see AI as a realistic possibility (unless, as noted, it is incredibly stupid), but all power to you!

AI? You'd be my hero. You have my vote

 Maybe just start with the Fellowship block, since things were simpler then.  If you ever need a playtester count me in.  I always thought the LOTR tutorial would be the best videogame I owned if only it had a few more pre-constructed decks.

Actually I'm starting with only a single deck for test purposes. It's some starter deck from FoTR. I also like very much the tutorial, in fact I have never played against a human opponent :), though I own a lot of cards. I started collecting well after the game's decline ...

This is something I've toyed about doing but the rules logic and data input is quite daunting.  It was going to be the next component of my collection manager.
If you can do it, I'll be on board for any sort of testing you need.  Or any help in programming should you need it.
