So it depends on whether it means, "Subtract the minion's vitality from the wounds that the dwarf caused in the skirmish," or "If the minion did not take all wounds that the dwarf could have caused". I have no idea. I'll lean towards the one I like better. :)

If you have a Dwarf that was damage +4, he would cause five wounds; however, if that same Dwarf overwhelms a minion, he causes no wounds. More Yet To Come allows you to assign the four wounds from the damage bonus, not five wounds which are all the wounds the minion could have taken if not overwhelmed.
