Mono-Green Mono-Elves (Joraga Junk)
« on: February 11, 2010, 03:34:12 PM »
So, I saw Joraga, Strength of the Tajuru, and Oran-Rief, and realized they had a great synergy. With mana accel (wich elves are great at), it is not hard to have 5 or more 5/5's or more down by turn 5. It still has some holes, but that is why I am asking for advice here. So here we go:

16   Forest
4   Oran-Rief, the Vastwood

4   Nissa's Chosen
4   Elvish Archdruid
4   Llanowar Elves
4   Elvish Visionary
4   Arbor Elf
4   Joraga Warcaller
4      Cyclian Elf

4   Strength of the Tajuru
4   Canopy Cover
4   Eldrazi Monument

Sideboard:

3   Windstorm
4   Naturalize
4   Overrun
4   Fog

Sideboard has the usuall option of a mono-green deck.

Here are the important cards:

Joraga Warcaller: An elf lord for 3 mana... what isn't too like? If you have a oran-rief of two down, you can essentially kick him for half price. Pay as much of the rest of the kicker cost as you can, and all our elves have at least +2, usually +4 or more.

Elvish Archdruid: Both lords and adds mana for another multi-kick or 4.

Nissa's Chosen and Elvish Visionary: Nissa's Chosen is a great strong elf for swinging with if your warcaller pumps him.  Visionary draws cards, which is always great.

Strength of the Tajuru: Allows you to add even more counters to your warcaller, make him and all other elves a lot stronger.

Vines of Vastwood: Joraga will have a big cross hair painted in his forehead for removal, so anything like this is great. Other options include Canopy Cover and Regenerate.

Harrow: Useful for mana-accel, as the lands come into play untapped.

This deck can be VERY explosive... I just played a game where Joraga was kicked 8 times with 8 elves (9 total and 2 archdruids) on the field, and an overrun in hand. On turn 5. That is 9 11/11 creatures on turn 5.

I think you could use Garruk, maindecked. Does not hurt your mana acceleration that much (he DOES essentially come down for 2 measly mana, after all), and packs an overrun efect on his own.

Id use Nissa Revane in that deck, but it looks pretty sweet as it is, groundswell is a good card there as well, as it looks like youll always have played a land. Id drop strength of the tajuru, it isnt a massively good card and it costs a lot to get the best out of it.

I like this deck, but in this Standard, just forget it. Jund and a maximum of 8 Wraths leaves you absolutely defenseless.

Strength of the Tajuru allows me to essesntially kick Joraga Warcaller again. I I have 9 mana to spend, I put 7 +1/+1 counters on Joraga Warcaller, and all my elves have +7/+7, in addition to my archdruids and other kicks on Joraga. As for wrath effects... this can end the game before they can be played. Turn 4 DoJ is the eareliest possible, and this deck will be swinging for critical damage before then. Also, regenerate allows me to keep some players on the field.

I tried Nissa and Garruk, but they slowed down the deck too much. If it end up needing something more permament, I'd prefer Eldrazi monument.

I'd run Garruk anyway, using him as token-adding-canonfodder, just try to overrun your opponent with him, and even if you have just 2 copies in this Deck, this shouldn't be a big problem.
did I already mention how powerful Planeswalkers were in the lategame?  ;)

With this deck, there is no lategame :)

Garruk may end up finding hiw way in over Overrun, but for right now, 9 11/11s on turn 5 is not something that I think needs drastic changes.

Played a few more games with this, ended up vs R/W/B control and beat it on turn 9 with 8 19/19 creatures on the field. Fun times.

Let's see, I need to re-edit the deck a little. I changed some stuff. I'm thinking about losing the windstorms because of the added monument. Mostly it is just there to prevent an annoying Day of Judgement, but since doesn't need both...

Also, I removed 4 lands and added 4 cyclian elfs. Greenweaver druid is also accpetable. It is only having trouble vs wrath effects, of course, but Eldrazi monument helps out there.

Yeah, this deck works really well for me. The only trouble is the more removal they have, the harder it gets, but eldrazi monument is great to solve even that. I hope it works well for you!

BTW, it will not always go 9 11/11 by turn 5, but it happens a little less than 50%. When it doesn't, it happens just a tad slower, by turn 7 max. You can also go lower earlier, like 5 6/6s by turn 3. It varies and you have to figure out will will work best from your oppening hand. I reccomend mulling if you have more than 2 lands in your hand and some mana dorks. Ideally you want 2 dorks, one land, oran rief, a joraga, an archdruid, and a vines in your opening hand. But work with it, you'll figure it out quickly. Have fun watching your opponents try to figure out how you did so much in so little time :)
