Getting to know you....
« on: July 02, 2008, 08:37:54 AM »
Been a while since we did one of these, and we've had some new members since then--and some changes in the lives of our forum veterans, I'm sure--so it's that time again. Time for...introductions!

Tell us about yourself! You can post as much or as little info as you like. I'll break the ice....

What's your name, boy?
J. Ryan Evans, good sir. But fellow World Wide Interweb users know me best as Dáin Ironfoot or, 'round other parts, as "Seawolf".

You a boy or a girl?
Male.

How ooh-old are you?
I'll be 28 in a week. Yikes.

Where you from?
Maryland. Lived here all my life, though I was born in Texas.

You got a job, you bum?
I'm a government slave with the DLA. Hoping to become slightly less of a slave with the NSA in a few months, though.

Married? Dating?
Yes, married for two years. :) If anyone wants the full story on how we met and all, let me know. It's a story and a half.

You got kids?
We will have our first in less than four months...a girl. I'm excited, yet terrified. :o

How long you been here?
I arrived at CobraCards in January of 2007. (I know, feels like a lot longer, doesn't it?) But that was after a year and a half long gap away from the LOTR TCG community, before which I'd been a longstanding member of Decipher's boards.

And how'd you find us, anyway?
A post at Decipher's boards, actually, after I came back from aforementioned absense. I think it was Menace64's fault, so blame him.

How long you been playing card games?
I played a tiny bit of Magic: The Gathering...jeez, back when it first hit the shelves, I guess. A friend of mine was into it and let me borrow some of his cards to play. Then I got into Star Trek CCG during its early life with a couple of my cousins (and my uncle, funny enough)...I guess that was back in high school, 1995 or 1996-ish. Highlight of that was finding the origial Jean-Luc Picard in a booster pack. :P Played a little Star Wars CCG around that same time, but never really got into it. Fell out of card games in college, until poking around for new ST CCG stuff one day in 2002 and stumbling across Decipher's website and LOTR TCG. I was hooked...though as a typical penniless college student, I didn't really have the funds to buy much, so I just followed it for a while until finally joining the Decipher forums in...2005, was it? Maybe 2004. Can't remember now. Anyway, still didn't play it yet, but followed it very closely and got into DCing (which I became most "famous" for in the forums), calling myself a "student of the game". Fell out of DCing and the forums for a while before finding CC around Christmas of '06, and then went full bore back at the game. FINALLY bought some cards and started playing last fall. Loved it even more ever since.

Jeez, I didn't ask for your freakin' life story!
I have a tendency to ramble, for those who have been living under a rock and not noticed until now.

What else do you do with your time?
Just finished a master's degree after two long years, so since that began...not much. :P But I enjoy spending time walking or playing games with my wife, playing with my dog, bowling, bouldering (though I gotta get back in shape to do that effectively again :-\), target shooting, reading (MAN, have I missed that...got a number of books to catch up on), watching various films and a couple TV shows (Lost and Mythbusters, mostly), fantasy sports (usually competing against my wife 8-)), watching sports (at the parks/stadiums, if I can), and of course, making LOTR TCG dream cards. It's kind of my "thing" around here.

Anything else?
Uh...I like seafood?

Yeah yeah, that's great. Got any pictures to share?
Sure. Here are a few:

A now-famous avatar I used to have, and still use on MSN Messenger. Yes, the gun is real, and yes, it's mine.

The rest are big, so I'll just do links....

- My wife and I. Guess what event THIS was?

- Swing dancing at said event. Yeah...don't ask me to do a whole lot of that now. I've probably forgotten more than I learned.

- Me and my then-future bride at Medieval Times.

- Christmas in New York! Yes, really!

- At a ballgame with my wife's sister. True story...I was interested in that sister in high school, and we actually went to prom my junior year. Life turns out so funny sometimes. :D

- Our daughter. Hopefully I'll be able to post some clearer pictures when she's, you know, out of the womb. ;)

Okay, that's enough. You can all return to your normal lives...AFTER you post about yourself! Again, as much or as little as you like. I don't expect everyone's going to want to post their pictures, for example, but at least telling us how you got into card games and this little community of ours would be nice.

What's your name, boy?
Mark Barlow.

You a boy or a girl?
Neither. I'm a man, man.

How ooh-old are you?
The ripe old age of 20.

Where you from?
Born in Texas, raised in Kansas.

You got a job, you bum?
Two, actually. I'm working at a local private school as a teaching assistant and I've got a part-time night job at an amusement park.

Married? Dating?
I'd like to be married but I'm not.

You got kids?
Not yet.

How long you been here?
Uhh... I believe I showed up in like April of 2006 or something close to that.

And how'd you find us, anyway?
I think someone told me to come here on Decipher. And yes, Dain, it was my fault.

How long you been playing card games?
Since '99, I reckon. I believe that's when Pokemon hit America like the plague and the accompanying TCG reeled me in. I played that for a few months before making the difficult transition into SWCCG (at this time I was only 10 years old or so). I stuck to that one for the next few years, up until its demise in 2002. Luckily, LotR exploded then and I found a new Decipher-made game to sink my teeth into. From then on I've tried just about every viable card game on the market and I've started playing Warhammer 40,000 and Star Wars miniatures.

Jeez, I didn't ask for your freakin' life story!
I can't think of anything witty to say.

What else do you do with your time?
This summer my time is at a premium. Working two jobs leaves me with little chance for leizure activities. But my goal is to build up enough savings so that I can afford to live on my own (finally) in the fall. I'll have to get a 'normal' full-time job so that I'll have the time I need to sit down and begin writing. I hope to be a published author.

Anything else?
I get sick when I eat cake, cupcakes, pancakes, waffles, and anything before 10:30.

Yeah yeah, that's great. Got any pictures to share?
My brain, circa early this year. There's something going wrong inside that's left me without most of my short-term memory. No one really knows what's happening.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v163/edibleapeman/me2.jpg Bigger picture. Probably the coolest picture taken of me to-date.

An older picture of me back from high school, sporting my Austrian hat and flannel. I love the way I used to dress.

Pretty cool, huh?

Heheh. I didn't expect anyone else to follow my self-deprecating questions, but I guess that DOES make it funnier. :D

Stupid work firewalls. Can't see the pics...I'll have to check again tonight. Speaking of Australian hats, though, I have a fedora I used to wear a lot...and still pull out from time to time. I'll have to see if I can rustle up a picture later.

A good start. :) Anyone else?
Best regards,
Dáin

Yes, that's right! That's an Austrian Hat! ;-)
I am surprised that anyone knows that Austria exists... ;-)

I should post myself too...

What's your name, boy?
Christopher Columbus Cornelius IV, hence the CCCORNIV

You a boy or a girl?
Male.

How ooh-old are you?
I'll be 38 in a month.

Where you from?
I'm originally from Bayou La Batre, Alabama, I moved to the Birmingham area in January of 1991.

You got a job, you bum?
Like Ulmo/Borky I'm a programmer at a stock brokerage firm.

Married? Dating?
I've been married to my wife Mandy for almost 11 years.  Our annivesary is two weeks from now.

You got kids?
No, but we have to dogs which we treat like kids.

How long you been here?
Since the middle of May.

And how'd you find us, anyway?
After I couldn't get to Cobra Cards or LOTRTCG.FANHQ anymore. I scoured the net for a decent forum.  I had bookmarked the lotrtcggdb page a while back.  I finally noticed the link to this forum.

How long you been playing card games?
It's funny.  I am a huge Conan and Robert E. Howard fan. The Conan TCG was coming out and I decided to order it from Potomac Distributions website.  I had to order at least $125 in order to place an order and I was $8 short.  I ordered the LOTR 2-player starter to finish off my order and that was a little over two years ago and we haven't played the Conan TCG yet.

Jeez, I didn't ask for your freakin' life story!
That would make a good movie, at least during the 20-22 year old part of my life.

What else do you do with your time?
I'm a big sports fan, mainly college football, NFL football, auto racing, basketball and soccer in that order.  Baseball, hockey and golf could cease to exist today and I could care less.  I enjoy watching movies and a little tv and that's about it.

Anything else?
I use to swear I could smell red-headed freckly people.  My wife has witnessed the power.  I'd make a sour face and declare "I smell a freckly person!" We'd then turn a corner or walk down the next aisle and there they would be.  It's not any person with freckles it had to be really red headed and really freckly.  I could sniff them out though for whatever reason.  I've seemed to have lost this power about seven years ago, it's been a long while since I've smelled the particular smell that freckly people put off.  I use to think that there was a purpose for me having this power, but alas the only purpose was for me to tell someone about it and for them to think I was weird.  Useless power.

Picture?
You are NOT ready for that!!

What's your name, boy?
Funny. You ask "What's your name, boy?" before determining gender....

You a boy or a girl?

Male

How ooh-old are you?
18, now

Where you from?
New Mexico, originally. Moved to Kansas around '96, and now move back and forth from North Dakota every summer.

You got a job, you bum?
If you wanna call it a job....
In fact, one of my co-workers and I were just talking about how to respond to questions like this.
I aid in the genetic modification, production, and data collection of hybrid corn.
AKA, I wander around a cornfield weeding, stapling paper bags to the corn, and counting cornstalks. (Well, there's more to it than that, but it's pretty boring.)

Married? Dating?
No, and no. I have so far managed to avoid any... romantic entanglements.

You got kids?

Nope

How long you been here?
Pretty much since Kralik created the place. I joined the old D forums back right before Reflections was released, then joined CC right before Treachery and Deceit was released.

And how'd you find us, anyway?
CC died a long, slow death. Kralik created this place, and I was on the CC e-mail list that was bouncing around as we sought a new home.

How long you been playing card games?

Well, I learned to play Solitaire on the computer about ten years ago.... :P
Been playing LotR since Fellowship.

Jeez, I didn't ask for your freakin' life story!
Jeez, I didn't ask for your freakin' impatience!

What else do you do with your time?
Read, write.... I'm about 2/3 through writing a sci-fi trilogy, and a friend of mine is having his first trilogy of novels published, coming out either late this year or start of next year.
Oh, and I weed cornfields.

Anything else?
I like seafood, too!

Yeah yeah, that's great. Got any pictures to share?
Actually, they say that 1 picture = 1000 words. Therefore 1000 words = 1 picture. At 340 words, this post constitutes just over 1/3 of a picture.

EDIT: Alright, now that I have access to my camera again, I give you pictures of the most beautiful thing I've ever seen... and it's a one thousand year old boat. Trust me, it looks better in person. The layout of the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo is just such that you cannot get a good picture of the whole ship. Plus, the lighting was terrible.

Alright, NK and friends: your discussion split off, because it looks like it could sorta choke out the normal 'formulaic' flow for this thread.

...if that makes any sense.

What's your name, boy?
Felipe R. Musco, aka FM, Armageddon, The Witch King or The Living Vampire across the net.

You a boy or a girl?
Surely a boy!

How ooh-old are you?
23 now, and I already miss being 18...

Where you from?
Rio de Janeiro, but now I live in Florianópolis, which is an island in the south region of Brasil.

You got a job, you bum?
I work for the State, in the capital's Courthouse, and I "officially" graduate from Law School in about 3 weeks, then I start studying for 3 more years, at least, to become a State Judge.

Married? Dating?
Had a girlfriend for the last 5 years, and we were planning on getting married next year. However, she wanted to leave the country, and I wanted to stay, so even though we loved each other very much, we decided that we should go our separate ways, so no one has to sacrifice their career for the other. It sucks, but hey, I love her that much.

You got kids?
No, and I don't think I'll ever have, now. Can't picture me having kids with a different girl.

How long you been here?
Joined Cobra Cards in 2006, I guess, and have been here ever since.

And how'd you find us, anyway?
Transfered here after CC crashed.

How long you been playing card games?
I learned playing Magic:the Gathering back in 2001, but I already knew how to play Pokémon before that, I believe since 1999, although I never really played. In December 2001, I switched to Lord of the Rings, and played from Fellowship of the Ring (actually, Realms of the Elf-Lords had just come out) until The Return of the King. Then, taxes became too high and the game got too expensive to play, so I stopped playing altogether in 2003. Got back to TCGs in 2006, but now playing Magic, and I've won a few tournaments since then, but nothing too big, since college took me quite some effort. I intend to qualify to the 2009 nationals, though. Or at least play a GP.

Jeez, I didn't ask for your freakin' life story!
What can I say? I've got a great life, I like to share it!

What else do you do with your time?
I read a lot, listen to music (love music), I'm planning on starting keyboard lessons again so I can play in my friend's band. I also read a lot of articles on MtG so I can always be aware of what's going on with the game, and I'm a Dungeons & Dragons DM, so I have to read a LOT of Rulebooks, prepare plots, create characters, schedule our sessions, and I also create a lot of Magic Items, Spells, Classes and Prestige Classes not in the books, which is pretty time-consuming on its own. I play soccer at least twice a week, and basketball at least once, and I've been planning to get back to playing tennis once a week as well.
In sports, I've officially played Indoor Soccer as both striker and goalkeeper; Soccer as SB, OMF or FW and goalkeeper; played tennis; played basketball as both PG and SG; sailed; rowed; and swam. Sports are great! I like watching sports on TV, mostly the NBA, NFL , UEFA CHampion's League, Brazilian Championship (root for Flamengo), and a bunch of sitcoms. And I'm also a movie freak, I watch a lot of those.
BTW, I'm "kind" of an insomniac, so I only have to sleep, like, 4 hours a day, so that's where I get all this time.

Anything else?
I can cook sushi?

Yeah yeah, that's great. Got any pictures to share?
I do, if anyone is interested, feel free to look me up at orkut.com.
