Merry's Sword
« on: April 10, 2010, 09:53:44 AM »
I have a question regarding Merry's Sword (7R242).

What is the point of this card? In my opinion it is infinitely times inferior to Pippin's sword!

It says if I exert Merry twice, I can exert a minion once for each Rohan companion I spot.

Now assuming I spot 3 Rohan companions in my fellowship, I get to excert the enemy 3 times. Does this apply to only ONE minion which is skirmishing Merry or ONE minion skirmishing anyone in my fellowship or can I excert each minion skirmishing my fellowship a random number of times, as long as it doesn't exceed the number of Rohan companions I have?

Cheers,
-Silver

Merry's Sword is used as a maneuver action (not a skirmish action). The phrase "you spot" (as opposed to "you can spot") means you can choose however many [Rohan] companions you want to spot, but then you must take the action of exerting a minion that many times. The "for each" part means you can spread these exertions however you like, including exerting a minion more than once.

It's useful against Enquea LoM when more than 5 companions are in play, and in [Rohan] wounding decks. One tactic is to run it with Swordthain and Sword Rack; Swordthain bounces himself back into your hand, restoring his vitality, and Sword Rack stacks the Sword (which would be discarded otherwise when Merry bounces) for later use.

So assuming 2x Orthanc Warrior and 1x Uruk Rear Guard are about to skirmish my fellowship, I exert Merry twice in the Maneuver phase and then, (assuming if I have 3x Rider of Rohan), I can exert each minion once, or exert an Orthanc Warrior and the Uruk Rear Guard twice?

Exactly.

Merry's Sword
Slaked Thirsts
Terrible and Evil

Are among the only cards in movie block that protect against Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul if you want to run more than six five companions. Merry's Sword is better than Pippin's Sword in my opinion.

How about Stand to Arms? I'm guessing it's too late to be useful since Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul can do his action already in the maneuver phase?

Well, the goal is to do Maneuver Wounding. Baruk Khazad is a great idea too.

What does the second sentence in the card mean? That the shadow player's maneuver phase is skipped? Or that you may perform two subsequent actions?

Yes, you can perform two actions in a row.

Quick As May Be is good too.
