A different kind of memorable gaming moment
« on: July 05, 2010, 09:29:51 PM »
I saw Tbiesty's favorite moment thread and at first I thought it referred to any game.  Though I have many memorable LOTR moments, the first thing I thought of when I saw the memorable game moment thread was FFVII, Aries' death scene.  This impacted me a lot.  For starters I never saw it coming, and secondly, Why Aries?!  Thirdly, up to that point in my video game career, I didn't (and still don't) see many major characters die off in-game.  So, what scene impacted you as you have played video games?  Are you partial to Mario and his countless rescues of Princess Toadstool?  Did you laugh when General Pepper received his bill from Team Star Fox at the end of Star Fox 64?  Were you blown away after finding the best Chrono Trigger ending (The developers' ending)?  Did you cry when Aries died?  Did you sing along to the subtitles of Celes' opera scene in FFIII (or FFVI depending on your preference)?  Did your heart race as Zelda gently touched Link's hand as she took from him the Ocarine of Time in The Legned of Zelda?  What video game moment left you breathless?

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has the most touching ending I have ever played, and that game is FILLED with epic moments, like watching the sunrise over Lake Hyrule, Link's intimate interactions with several of the characters, especially Saria. It is the greatest game of all time in my opinion.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare contained several moments where I was like "WOAH", such as the point when you are racing to the missile silo, and then you see two nukes get launched. I said out loud "that means trouble" and I just felt like I had to hurry up.

Modern Warfare 2 didn't have quite so many moments. But the end of the Airport scene and the betrayal by Shepherd are particularly memorable moments.

I was always a huge Metroid fan, so playing through the trilogy was always incredible to me. Super Metroid still has one of the best endings of all time.

Dead Space has a head wrecking ending.

Lylat Wars got mentioned, the race to escape with James Fox.

Portal is filled with hilarious and epic moments, and is so innovative that I rank it among the best games ever made.

I have always been a huge fan of Resident Evil, there are so many things about those games that makes them epic. Resident Evil 1 (the GC remake), Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 are the best. Excellent characters, and sublime story development for a game whose main premise is mindless zombies.

Just a few for me:

KOTOR's, and to an extent KOTOR 2's, revelations

Keyes' and Johnson's deaths in Halo 3

Sonic Unleashed Perfect Dark Gaia fight

Halo Wars "Monsters" cutscene

I will add Resident Evil: Director's Cut (PS1) and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (PS2) to that list and agree totally with the rest of them. :gp: for you for agreeing on the best three.

The original PC DOS games Dune, Dune 2: The Battle For Arakis and The Colonel's Bequest are the most memorable games for me.

I remember pilot wings!  I didn't get that far, but wow, I thought I was the only person who played that one

Its cliche as anything, but Gears of War has great cinematic moments. Dialogue is sketchy, but the gameplay is brutal and the storyline pretty epic.

I'll be honest, that with the exception of Portal, I haven't really gotten balls-deep in a video game since Majora's Mask. But when it comes to cool games, I've got to say that I've enjoyed every Elder Scrolls game produced. Morrowind was probably my favorite, but Oblivion was great too, especially since it was way better for 360 than Morrowind was for the original X-Box.

When I first got Morrowind though, I swore off light and played for something like 60 out of 72 hours. Embarrassing? Probably. But #$&*@!, that game was great.

I'm surprised you managed to avoid the Aerith spoiler all this time, jdizzy. I knew what was in store for her beforehand, but not when it'd happen, which made for some paranoid gaming. Lots of memorable moments from the Final Fantasy series alone:

FFV:

- You know when you have a piece missing from a jigsaw puzzle? This is worse.
- Scene where the drake transforms into a phoenix.

FFVI:

- Opera scene FTW!
- Not quite in-game, but loved the composition of the ending FMV.

FFVII:

- Aerith's death scene.
- Realizing Cloud *was* watching over Tifa at Nibelheim. Even though Tifa got stabbed. And run over by Zack.

FFVIII:

- Balamb Garden's ability. Just too cool!
- Realizing SeeD's purpose.

FFIX:

- "Ooo, soft..."
- Zidane and Vivi bond in Madain Sari; Eiko flees from this manly task.
- Assault of the white dragons (abbreviated).

BTW, did you try breeding the fastest gold chocobo in FFVII? I hit a max of 176 km/h, 999 stamina, but as I remember the race completion time was still getting shorter (maybe it was the default running speed being affected). Stopped this tear-inducing task at 14 generations.

i missed most of the breeding stuff.  The best chocobo I got before my comp crashed was a black chocobo.  (I had FFVII on the comp.  It was prepared by some comp company.  Same with VIII.  I never owned a Sony Playstation.)
The oprea scene from 6 is still one of my all time favorite game scences. EVER!
