Linkin Park released a new single!
« on: August 15, 2010, 07:22:30 AM »
I'm a bit late, I know, but as I've been on vacation, I wasn't able towatch it, so here it goes:

THE NEW SINGLE OF OUR ALL LOVED BAND LP!  :uh-huh:

Second single "Waiting for the End released"!

This song didn't really convince me yet, at least it's not mainstream sh** as Not Alone, but it definitely isn't even nearly as good as Papercut, Faint or Numb/ Numb encore. Even We made it is better, but we'll see how the new album is gonna be. I hope it's a killer with some "old style" Linkin Park! ;)

And no, I'm not listening to Hip-Hop. I listen to LinkinPark. That's a big difference. ;)

Well, it's my own opinion, but I have to agree with Ket. Linkin Park is just plain Pop disguised as Hard Rock/Metal.

Well, I apreciate your opinions and respect them, and I really hate to disagree with you, but I think you're wrong you maybe didn't listen to some good LP tracks.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions, but Linkin Park is one of the worst bands of the last 30 years. Maudlin and cliche, every single Linkin Park song is based on the same formula and thus each of the songs sounds the same.

Have you ever seen sheet music of LP? I agree, the songs are based on a formula, like 99% of all songs and compositions are. Really! Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Debussy etc, just to call some componists of older epoches had a formula, but I like them. Bach's type of compositions had so clear rules that you usually recognize them in a couple of seconds. Yo ueither way hate him, or love him, just because his style is unmistakable. I, from my side, like Bach pretty much, also due to the fact that I play acoustic guitar for a very long time (since I'm 8) and played (and also arranged) pieces from Bach. But back to LP:

There really are very few bands/ componists that don't have a clear line. Even Queen (which I like really much, maybe even more than LP) and Frank Zappa (who is also very nice) have certain lines they follow in their songs, even if they aren't that visible on the first look. It's clear that Linkin's style is more straightforward, but still ,I don't really think this is a valiable argument, especially when you look at the whole palette of songs they produced. If you say that "Not Alone" or "Leave out all the rest" sound same like to "faint" or "papercut", then no one might help you, sorry.

The two singers say that the band gets the "pissed off" sound because they were ignored in high school. You're kidding, right? I stopped caring about high school when I graduated high school and went onto the next thing. I really don't see much difference in Linkin Park and "boy bands" like the Backstreet Boys, except for that they perceive themselves as being "hardcore."

In all of their efforts to be "unique" and "not mainstream," Linkin Park has succumbed to the generic angst-y sounds that plague this generation of listeners.

lol, I'm not sure what you wanted to say with that high school stuff, but they are, as pointed out before, obviously not the same as "Backstreet boys like" bands. Just look at the constellation of bandmembers:

    * Chester Bennington – vocals
    * Rob Bourdon – drums, percussion
    * Brad Delson – lead guitar
    * David "Phoenix" Farrell – bass
    * Joseph "Mr." Hahn – turntables, programming, samples
    * Mike Shinoda – vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboard

Now, what's the difference between LP and another "usual" rock band? Well, they have a DJ and a rapper, isn't that enough? I don't know any other band that does such style mixing like LP. From Pop to Heavy metal to Hip-Hop and Rap, there's nearly each popular music style of the 21st century represented here. And the second step, mixing those steps makes them so special.

Just to say, I know pretty much about music and such stuff, I'm probably going to study music and either become a) musician b) componist) c) music teacher. I'm just not sure yet, I like doin' all of these things. And when regarding those sheet music, you really can see the brilliant things that seem so simple, but they are not. Composing that sort of music is really hard, much harder than like Jazz or most Rock (I won't even compair it to Pop and R&B.. pff...). It seems to be simple, yes, that's what I thought. But writing songs in their style is nearly impossible. It's pretty easy to write songs in the "Justin Bieber style", you just take 4 chords, an easy beat and a nice text, then take someone who can sing pretty well and looks good and there you go. You can't do that process with LP.

And I don't really think their music bcame too "hard".  Compaired to (most) other metal bands like slayer, you can call their music soft.

I'm sorry if I have offended anyone, but as my main hobby (and future profession) is music, I can't agree with you. You can use such clichés on every, and when I say every, I mean every type of music. Give me any song and I can tell you lots of clichés why this song is garbage (I did that before, as might see) ;). Music is also about compromises.

Let's not forget that Linkin Park takes the same four chord shapes and throws more sounds on top of it. Their two most popular songs (as far as I'm concerned), "In the End" and "Numb" are four cycled chords with sounds thrown on top.

Nothing wrong with minimalist music, occasionally. I mean, this is why the 90s are typically thrown under the rug as well. Instead of messing around with individual notes or crazy riffs like the leads of the 80s, the 4-chord song gives more of a mood to the song, operates withing some set parameters and as such, gives the listener an opportunity to connect with something familiar to them.

Though I do have to say, the 4-chord song is a fun subject to ridicule (language warning).

That said, The Catalyst is crap, their two previous singles were better, IMO.

I don't generally listen to Linkin Park, but in a way, they got me started on the path to the music area I listen to now mostly (rock and metal). I don't limit myself with genres and in pretty much any genre, I can find a good song or at least the one I like.

As for LP, I can remember no more than few songs, but those I like and they are pretty much the most popular ones.

I really can see how Linkin Park can be thrown in the same basket as Backstreet Boys and such because the only people I know who are really listening to both those are teenagers. There is nothing wrong there, just stating my observations. I listened to them while I was 13-16. I still like one Backstreet Boys song very much - More than that, but reasons for that are mostly nostalgic.

Well, time for me to come into the discussion again, right?

First, I don't know where you have this High School stuff from. Their songs usually are about Paranoia (crawling, papercut), love (numb), and problems of the modern civilastion (what i've done, the catalyst).

Second, I don't think that numb and in the ned are their best songs. As I mentioned before, those are Papercut and Faint. Numb is also nice, but I like the Numb/Encore version more that the original one.

Yes, the catalyst definitely won't be their new number one song.

Anyways, I think that WK set himself up for this:

THE NEW SINGLE OF OUR ALL LOVED BAND LP! :uh-huh:

That is the kind of statement that just welcomes criticism. I will say that, if the original post just said, "I really like Linkin Park; check out their new single!" I would've ignored this topic all together. But between the Linkin Park worshipping and the snobbish obloquy against hip-hop, I think that he kind of invited the response.
-wtk

True, true. I actually wanted to find out what you guys think about LP, and what is better than a statement like that? I wanted to motivate you for a discussion, which, as far as I see, worked. ;)

Most of my freinds listen to LP for a pretty long time. I was listening to The Offspring before that, but it's also about playing an instrument:

See, if you play a music instrument, you usually start to listen to similar music as you play, especailly if you started playing that instrument when you were young. If I'd play sax instead of guitar for such a long time, I'd probably mostly listen to Blues. But I pülay guitar, so Rock was really the music style I came to like that. I'm not sure if you play(ed) any musical instrument, but if you did, that could probably explain your opinion.

guitar -> rock -> offspring -> LP

And my second favorite band is Queen, as I also play Piano and sing, which is all included in that band. (my synthetizer takes care of the percussion, just to complete the list).

I don't generally listen to Linkin Park, but in a way, they got me started on the path to the music area I listen to now mostly (rock and metal). I don't limit myself with genres and in pretty much any genre, I can find a good song or at least the one I like.

also true for me, but actually LP and Queen are those I listen to the most. But I like practicelly any kind of music, except Techno, House etc.  everything that goes into the "just sounds " direction, but that even without any instruments.

critisism is more than welcomed. ;)

I like Linkin Park and i am not 16. I also was not 16 when they first hit the mainstream. Simplicity and formulated music is sometimes appealing (I love Blink 182) and when you do not have a music bone in your body (which I do not) how the music is made is not a measure of interest.

Age has nothing to do with liking music (except for perhaps peer influence) .. some people like bands / singers and others don't. The older you get the more of a non-issue it becomes. Difference / diversity should celebrated not shunned and it is teenagers often that struggle with this.

Just my 2 cents.

I think what we have here is a simple difference of opinion.
Music is art and art is, like so many other things, entirely subjective.

True.

False. Music can be deconstructed and the merits of its instrumentation/lyrics, etc. can be discussed rationally.

Plus, art has rich culture behind it, studying why we get where we get could be derived from studying the origins of the DIY punk scene circa 1990s, or studying the origins of impressionist painting.

So it is completely worth the discussion.

False.
I respectfully disagree. Many don't like hip hop or drum 'n' bass. I do, but that doesn't mean they're either right or wrong. Many others, such as myself, don't like thrash metal or country 'n' western, but that doesn't mean we're either wrong or right. And many people like Linkin Park, while many others don't, but neither party is somehow more technically knowledgeable about the construction of music. Music is, in my humble opinion, subjective.

Oh yes, I agree it is worth discussion, and I would class a lot of the above as such. I meant that the parts of this thread that suggest a person is either right to like Linkin Park or wrong to like Linkin Park, stem purely from a difference in music taste. My belief is that those parts are not discussion; they are merely pointless argument.

To clarify, I mean that the person's like or dislike of Linkin Park (or any other particular music) would not mean that they were more technically knowledgeable about music.
