Regarding SdA, yes, since its requires the .NET framework to run. It may run under WINE but I'm not sure. I would suggest trying out Lackey, as it works in both Windows, Mac, and (apparently) Linux. The LotR plugin is a bit dated but I will probably be updating it sometime soon.

Mods, I'll clean up this topic once I get the CRD from Pepin.

The problem with lackey is that few people use it, because SdA's UI absolutely kills Lackey. I'd try WINE first, then lackey.

Or run Windows off your mac, you can do both. My friend runs XP on his OS X.

Apopatos used mac, I think, didn't he?

The problem there is that you have to already own a legitimate copy of Windows, or have to mess with trying to get WINE working with Microsoft's .NET framework. OR download a free (2GB!) copy of Server 2008 from Microsoft and run it inside of VirtualBox. Lackey is a viable alternative that doesn't require too much technical work. No need to mess with port forwarding either.

Hamachi...

The problem isn't that its not a viable alternative, but that not many people use the alternative, leaving you with a much smaller group of players to take on. Features, coolness, etc aside, SdA is far more popular, and you're more likely to find a game on it.

Thanks Pepin! I'll give it a day or so and then move the off-topic parts of this thread to the dead pile. NB, we can argue the merits of differing card platforms in the Green Dragon some other day. :) Don't forget that I was the one who introduced Hamachi to CC in the first place, and I made an updated SdA.xml, so I am trying to support both programs. ;)

Not arguing the merits, the fact remains, SdA IS more popular, whether Lackey is better or not.

If you are on a Mac without Windows, being able to play with a few people is better than not being able to play at all. The whole discussion came up because AdultLink asked if SdA would work on his Mac. Let's give it a rest, eh?

My point is that it IS possible to run SdA on a mac, I know that Apopatos did it, and there are tons of emulators, or you can even run Windows on a mac. Plus, there's a Novell .net implementation that makes .net partially compatible with OS X.

Server 2008 isn't free.  You can just download it for free, and legally extend its trial period to 240 days.  Unless I'm missing something.  M$ is not free.

Why are you digging up this old thread? But anyway, you are right that it is only free from 240 days. Inside a virtual machine (VirtualBox), for the purpose of playing one game, this isn't a problem. Furthermore, there are multiple versions (Standard/Enterprise/Datacenter/Web) and each is eligible for a free trial period. By the time you're done with those, it will have been two years.

But I think my original point is that all that is harder than running native software on a Mac. :P
