Tournament legality of promo and league cards
« on: January 15, 2011, 01:56:23 PM »
Hello.

I am new to this site, so apologies if this has already been posted.

We are a bunch of people who played the game when it first came out. Years have passed and now we're getting together to play again. We want to play the game like back in the days in a "revival" kind of way. This means playing the expansions in the original order of release. Same goes for the rulings, errata, bannings, etc.

I've managed to sort this out with a little detective work. But I am really having a hard time finding this info:

1. Release dates of all promotional cards that weren't released in starters
2. Tournament legality of promotional and league cards (i.e. when did the different promo cards become tournament legal)

In the official FAQ's Decipher simply refer to the rules page, but obviously that doesn't do me any good now  :'(

I am hoping that some of you guys can help me with this info.

Thanks in advance!

First, welcome to TLHH! There's a lot of information here.
Where do you live, roughly? There are people in the US, Europe, Australia, and elsewhere. If you're anywhere nearby someone will try to find you. For instance, if you're within 5 hours of Louisville Kentucky I might come play.

As for your question, almost all promos are alternate images of cards in a set. They are legal with that set. 0P27 Frodo, Resolute Hobbit was an exception, due to the movies - it was legal beginning with its release with the movie promo. Now, I'd just play it with set 10.

The WETA Promos 0P56 through 0P60 are also exceptions, because they don't appear in a normal set. From what I can find, they are generally played like Reflections Set 9. I'd personally attach them to that set.

There might be more exceptions that others will add.

I am not aware of an official ruling on the league promos (62-67), but our group treats them as belonging to movie block.

However, many more knowledgeable members treat them as being illegal in pretty much any format, where there is some form of x-list. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

It would be a shame to not see some of these in a game once in a while, though...

Thanks for the input both of you. It was quite helpful!

@ Ramolnar: I live in Denmark, Europe so I guess it's a little more than a 5 hour trip  ;) As to the WETA promos 0P56 - 0P60 I seem to remember that these were in fact never tournament legal.

@Ununtrium: Yes I believe you are correct. Where did you get even get them? Same goes for 0P85-0P88 and 0P98-0P106 - there seems to be a gap here(?). How did you obtain them?

You do not want to know. Making countless trade offers and, of course, spending money, worldwide. I am just glad I completed my 0P-collection. The 0D's are a completely different story...obtaining an 0P127 is easy compared to certain 0D-promos, I can tell you... Oh, well! There is nothing quite as unattractive as a complete collection, is there? :)

No, I mean: How were they originally released? Were they released as promotional cards, in magazines, special prize support, special mail offers...?

0P56-0P60 were standards/expanded legal, but not movie block, I believe.

No, I mean: How were they originally released?

Those cards were released in limited numbers for signing up for the Decipher Lord of the Rings TCG Online program.
