It might be just me, or the card Shadowplay seems a bit ambiguous.  The game text thus states:  "To play, spot 2 companions. Each time a minion is played, you may exert a Hobbit companion to exert that minion (limit once per turn)."

Two options I can think of:

1. The trigger on this card can only be used once per turn
2. Or that this particular minion can be exerted only once by this card per turn

Once per turn. That is why you want 4 copies of it in play. Four copies means you can use 1 copy each turn for a maximum of 4 exertions per turn.
