Stopping Power?
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:54:39 PM »
Seeing the thread on Cycling, I was wondering what shadow sides have good stopping power?

Ideas I have had:
Southron leaders (Southrons and Seasoned Leader, Ships help cycle too)
Nazgul (Vague I know)
Battleground Uruks (with Suffered much Lost)

I believe Surging Up and Constantly Threatening are among the best stopping cards in movie block. Especially one version of a Surging Up deck that the_eye was using on gccg. Very nice.

I think Uruks are decent too. Especially when you have the option to get rid of cards, so big expensive Uruks will not clogg your hand.

I don't know about troll "swarm", since that implies to me that you have at least an equal number of minions and companions, and it's rare to get that many trolls out at once, but I do think that Troll of Cirith Gorgor is one of the most potent stoppers in Movie Block. That combined with Shelob and Web, along with whatever other Shadow support-area possessions you can throw in, really slows the Fellowship down. It's rare that somebody is going to try and double-move through a ToCG unless they know they can kill him somehow. I've done it before with an Ent deck using Terrible and Evil, but it's unusual.

I'd second Easterlings. It could be a field day for the Easterling Captain if a Raider Bow leaves plenty of twilight around in one site, and then the FP player moves again.

Not sure about the "stopping" (as opposed to killing) part, but I think [Sauron] Troll swarm qualifies for its title when used as a bomb. I'd expect Great Hill Troll x4 + Troll of Gorgoroth + random Orcs to drop at some point (shouldn't be too difficult if conditions stick, along with Ithil Stone). And just to make things worse for the FP player in Movie block, those Great Hill Trolls can discard any conditions defending the Ring-bearer as well.

Battleground Uruks are great if played well.  They have some powerhouses that get stronger with more site control, and in general Uruks have higher vitality than other minion races.  Examples being Advance Uruk Patrol, Uruk Assault Band, and my personal favorite, Uruk Vanguard.

My experience with uruks is that they don't have great stopping power, they are generally a bit squishy, averaging 2 wounds with many good ones requiring exertions, while lacking in good wound prevention-meaning that losing a skirmish will often kill them off, not to mention what woundings decks can do to them...

Also on site control I was under the impression that Suffered Much Loss only effected sites on the adventure paths so it is actually impossible to control a battleground in movie, is this wrong?

You are correct -- SML doesn't affect controlled sites.
