Towers Sealed Commentary -- Frodo Dies
« on: February 12, 2012, 04:28:20 PM »
I've been talking with friends about the TTT league off-site, and I thought I would share some of my commentary here.

WEEK 1

Nearly everyone picked the Aragorn starter.  Without going into a detailed analysis, let's just say this starter was head and shoulders better than the Theoden starter.  With boosters this starter had better surviving and better doubling power than the best FOTR league decks (and that was already a Bid High and Go First format).  Wingfoot was probably the stand-out card.  The Theoden starter had a perfectly good shadow side, but couldn't survive or double well.

Also of note: lack of punishment for big fellowships.  Guaranteed Southron Commanders turned out to be much less scary than even scattered Enqueas.

Given the abilities of this FP side, strategy for this format was simple: Bid High and Run.

WEEK 2

Nearly everyone picked the Legolas starter.  I found this choice less obvious.  Although the FP can pack quite a bit of direct damage, it could be thwarted by saving up minions for the double move.  Eowyn had the better FP side, especially if you had the 6 Rohan pumps from the Theoden starter.  However, Legolas had the better shadow.  The Southrons were quite imposing against Elf and Hunter FPs, and Mumaks and pump made Southron Commander in particular much better able to prevent fellowship explosions.

Dunland was no longer playable with so much direct damage running around, so everyone who went Aragorn was pushed into going Legolas.  I think the better build kept hobbits and stealths and ran some elf and dwarf pump ahead of direct damage.  Theoden/Eowyn with Uruks was also a good deck this week, although it was vulnerable to southron swarms on double moves due to its lack of ability to deal with Southron Commander.

Strategy here required more caution.

WEEKS 3-4

More players picked the Witch-King starter, I think, but not by as wide of a margin.  Both starters provided viable swarming shadows based on either Sauron orc hand extension or Isengard orc condition stacking.  The Sauron shadow was better, but both were playable.

The bigger difference was in FPs.  Ents, with their high strength and vitality, steamrolled Dunland, Southrons, and Uruks, and their Golden Hall gave other FPs trouble.  RBRs (and Elves and to a lesser extent Rohan) had a harder time with these shadows, which many people were still running, so they were not a good option.  Rohan could demolish Isengard orcs, though.  Rohan and Elves both had some defense against Sauron swarm (Rohirrim Bow and QAMB) although a good shadow player could play around these to some extent.  The Faramir starter did provide multiple copies of Sam; with all the Hobbit Swords and stealths around, he was by far the best defense both against swarms and against Southron Commander.

Sauron orcs, played correctly, could usually get kills, provided they could do one of two things.  One, leverage Southron Commander (probably on a Mumak) against large fellowships; or two, play Orc Insurgent against a vulnerable FP.  Orc Insurgent pretty much guaranteed a shadow win against anyone running 4 or more FP cultures.  This kills wounding decks (they have to give up either Gimli or Wingfoot).

Ents could easily survive most shadows and fit easily with hobbits and stealths to provide the best defense against Southron Commander.  Given these things, the Witch-King starter was the clear pick, and the strategy here was to play cautiously and go for shadow or FP wins as opportunities presented.

FRODO DIES

I was recently told that I had established a reputation for deadliness in the league.  I thought that was funny; I do not think I am the deadliest player here, nor close to it.  But it's true that my Sauron-centered deck went 9-1 in week 3, with the only loss due to a mistake on my part.  In week 4, the deck went 10-0 with 10 shadow victories.  I thought I'd lay out, here, just how the deck achieves its deadliness.

One thing I should emphasize first: this is not Moria with Goblin Armories.  Hand extension is easy for Sauron, and it's actually twilight that most constricts a successful swarm.

1) Bid low, go second, and don't pass them unless you see a disaster coming (e.g., their Sam + 2 swords + Heir of Elendil).  This keeps burdens down for Palantir Chamber (or possibly Pippin) if you end up running.  It also sets up several other key sites.  I usually bid 1, knowing I could remove that burden by playing Sam.

2) Teeth of Mordor.  This is not in the starter.  It's uncommon from a small set, so many people had one.  I opened two in week 4, and that's what made my week more consistent.  Orcs stacked on Teeth are almost never *necessary* to get a successful swarm off, but they give you a lot more flexibility in how you play your early shadow hands, as you can threaten stacking orcs instead of threatening a swarm.  Since early swarms are easily stealthed into uselessness, this is really key.  Surprisingly useful even against Rohan, unless they get lots of horses right away.

3) Golden Hall.  Best case scenario, you toss Hobbit Swords or Rohirrim Bows, but getting rid of weapons (and elven bows) helps you stack orcs, too.

4) Ered Nimrais.  (Site 4, 2 pool, +3 cost for comp/allies.)  When they move here, you play either nothing or a big orc you know can survive.  Doubling into 5 will be very risky, so they'll probably stop; if they do stop, on the following turn, you either get a bunch of bonus twilight for site 5 and 6 swarming or stacking, or they delay playing companions (and hence giving off valuable twilight) until the following turn, when it will be most deadly to them -- the turn they are moving into the sites with no skirmish cancellation (or better yet, into Cavern Entrance).

5) Properly costed orcs.  The 1 and 2 cost orcs are the important ones.  The best one is the 7/2 that spots 6 companions and exerts for a card.  The 6/2's are also good and the 5/2's for 1 are good as well.  Twilight is the limiting factor on a swarm so you want as many of these as possible.  If you are not running Teeth of Mordor, you can also use Isengard orcs and other cheap 2 vitality minions.  The 3 and 4 cost orcs (except Insurgent) are useful only for early swarms (the -3 site number), not for late swarms, so there should not be many of them.

6) Exert to draw.  This is not something you can rely on since it leaves you extra vulnerable to QAMB and Rohirrim Bows, but it is useful in some match-ups.  Orc Insurgent goes in this category, too.

7) Cavern Entrance.  (Site 7, 7 pool, Saruman's Snows.)  Not in any starter and uncommon in a big set; this was a very lucky first week pull for me, although it didn't matter much that week.  Cavern Entrance does 2 important things.  First, it prevents Severed, although this is just the equivalent of getting 1 extra orc.  Second...

8) Southron Commander + Mumak.  The Mumak is important; 2 stealths are hard to come by.  Even then, however, this doesn't make swarms work since they can stealth the first skirmish and then dump companions in fierce when the swarm is gone.  You either need On the March to back it up, or Cavern Entrance.  At Cavern Entrance these cards read "spend 7 to get the equivalent of 1 + X orcs, where X is the number of companions you see over 5."  If you've been following along with math, you can see that this is not an amazing value -- you could get about 4 orcs for the cost of these cards.  But it reduces the number of cheap orcs you need to have in hand, making the swarm easier to set up.  I ran 2 of each and that seemed to be about right.

All told, a hand of SC, Mumak, and 6 cheap orcs can get a kill against almost any fellowship at Cavern Entrance.  Insurgents and Teeth of Mordor can make this easier to set up in many cases.  Without Cavern Entrance, it will still work well at site 6 and above; you just might need a little extra twilight and 1 or 2 more orcs.

Interesting read. I hope you still have your deck saved, would be interesting to play a game one day.

My week 1 deck was typical Aragorn/Dunland, my only loss was when I got overbid. Week 2 I took Legolas starter and this is when my deck got its final shape - I was making only minor changes afterwards. The lucky pull was Gimli, Skilled Defender - key card for my FP side. I also got some nice Southron minions (especially in final week boosters) but they were not so important, as I was mostly winning with FP running to 9.

Deck I used week 4 (went 10-0)

Frodo, Tired Traveller
The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

The Riddermark
Wold of Rohan
Barrows of Edoras
White Rocks
Hornburg Courtyard
Hornburg Armory
Hornburg Causeway
Wizard's Vale
Palantir Chamber

1x Gimli, Skilled Defender (starting)
1x Merry, Learned Guide (starting)
1x Pippin, Wooly-footed Rascal (starting)
3x Aragorn, Wingfoot
1x Faramir, Son of Denethor
3x Legolas, Elven Comrade
2x Gandalf, The White Wizard
1x Lindenroot, Elder Shepherd
1x Sam, Samwise the Brave
1x Ranger's Sword, Blade of Aragorn
2x Hobbit Sword
1x Citadel of the Stars
1x Search Far and Wide
1x Baruk Khazad
2x Quick as May Be
3x Best Company
3x Khazad Ai-menu
3x Severed His Bonds
2x Knocked on the Head

3x Desert Warrior
3x Desert Spearman
1x Southron Runner
4x Southron Traveler
4x Desert Soldier
3x Southron Marcher
1x Desert Stalker
2x Southron Commander
1x Desert Legion
1x Desert Lord
1x Army of Haradrim
1x Southron Troop
4x Mumak
1x Southron Spear
3x On the March

Strategy was simple: run and stop opponent from running. I bid 3 and usually could go first. Then I was trying to double as much as possible early in the game, while my shadow side's aim was to scare opponent to make him stop often. Perfect scenario (which happened more or less in half of my games) was when I could single move all the way from 6 to 9, giving little twilight so that I could not be swarmed.

The deck was built to wound in many different ways. Maneuver events, Gimli fueled by pumps and Legolas, Wingfoot with hobbits and companions who could win skirmishes due to high strength (Gandalf and Lindenroot) or good ability (Faramir). This way I could clear the table and double. Sam was a good way around Southron Commander (I had one game when Sam became the ring-bearer at site 2 and survived till site 9).

Shadow was made to stop opponent or kill him if he ran. My favourite combo: Southron Traveler on a Mumak played on site 2. It added loads of twilight and if opponent still doubled to 3, I could make some serious damage. If he didn't, I was far ahead already at the beginning of the game, especially when I went first and doubled.

IMO biggest difference between FotR and TTT is lack of pumps for hobbits. In TTT 19 strength on the ring-bearer means overwhelm, while a well-prepared FP in FotR can get Frodo to 15 strength with 45 needed to overwhelm. Thanks to this, if you could discard some companions with Southron Commander, swarming was possible,

I pulled poorly throughout, although a second army of haradrim was nice, and an ithilien ranger and bow was epic in week 1: Start him and the hobbits, and pull Gorn from site 1, then when you get the bow, dunland just cries. Easterling Captain was nice, but after week one, rarely got more than 3 burdens. Desert legon was devastating against pippin happy fellowships!

RBRs are useful as they have nice possessions, but I agree that ens with orc swarm was great.

Week 1: Aragorn.  I still remember playing a paper TTT sealed event and how awful the Theodan starter was in the head to head matchup so this was a no brainer.   My only relevant rare was the Raider pump condition (1 cost, discard for +2). (Went 10-0)

Week 2: I choose Eowyn with the intention of building towards a stronger Rohan fellowship and Isen orc swarm.  I lose three games trying to make it work too early before switching back to Wingfoot.  Only relevant rare was the Southron who can exert to exert everyone if there are four cultures. (Went 7-3)

Week 3: Faramir starter so I can get the Isen orc base and finally a copy of Sam.  No relevant rares. I stuck with a rainbow Wingfoot fellowship and only lost to Felagund's swarm. (Went 9-1)

Week 4: Finally a stack of useful rares: Thundering Host x2 (to go with my third from the fixed starter), Eowyn SDoT, Isengard Mechanics.  Made a mono-Rohan isen orc deck and lost to an Ent deck (shadow couldn't get started) and to my fat fingers (accidentally conceded my last game at Site 4 while trying to play on my phone). (Went 8-2)

I liked the format more than I'm liking Fellowship sealed, but that's more due to Decipher changing their design tenets to be more helpful to mono-culture decks (common weapons, as an example).

I don't know if I'll have time to play my final game during TTT Sealed League #2. So far I have played 39, won 31 of them, which will probably give me 2nd place overall.

Week 1
Usual "bid high and run with Wingfoot". Pulled Cliffs of Emyn Muil, which was really helpful against Dunland and additionally removed me some burdens if drawn right at the start of the game. Went 8-2. Most important thing from this week: I pulled Cavern Entrance, so I knew what I'm playing weeks 3 and 4.

Week 2
Took Legolas starter and built rainbow wounding FP. Weaker than before, as I didn't have Skilled Defender. So instead of rare Gimli and Elven Comrade I went with Unbidden Guest and Archer of Mirkwood, this was less useful but still nice. Shadow was southrons that could launch very strong Southron Commander (not so good as before, as I had only 3x Mumak and no Southron Spear). Went 8-2.

Weeks 3 and 4
Took Witch-king deck to get [Sauron] orcs. Also built Ents FP (I feared too many people will use similar shadows and rainbows will die off Orc Insurgent). Went 15-4. Losses were:
- once due to being swarmed on a very stupid double move,
- once due to being one twilight short of swarming both at site 7 and 9,
- once due to my FP getting itself killed site 6 despite single moving all the time,
- once due to not being able to double enough to force opponent into a double late in the game and not being able to swarm on a single move due to him playing 5 companions 2 cultures deck with Ent Horde.

Out of 15 wins 14 were shadow kills, more than half of them happened at Cavern Entrance, most of the others at Palantir Chamber. There were also 2 site 5 kills and one at site 3 where I didn't even have a single fellowship phase (lucky hand with Orc Cutthroat and many small minions).

honestly, towers sealed would be more fun with some basic rules and added cards.

add 1x boromir, son of denethor to week 1's starting cards.
add 1x ulaire enquea, lt of mordor to week 1's starting cards.

ban cavern entrance.

Well, I don't agree about Boromir, but Enquea is a good idea. Southron Commander just doesn't cut it for crowd control in Tower block unless:

1) He has a Mumak
2) You have a pump in hand (preferably On the March)

As a bonus, if you can pair him with some of those Uruks that prevent unbound Hobbits from being discarded, you can cause a lot of havoc. I got an Uruk Follower in each of the TT sealed leagues, and he was invaluable.
All cards do what they say, no more, no less.
