High School football
« on: August 02, 2012, 07:00:43 PM »
So I am gonna try out for high school football Tuesday. I have never been on a team before but I have skills and everyone keeps saying I should try out and I want to we'll see. I am a junior this year and I am home-schooled so I hope to make the team. So wish me luck guys. And have any of you done football before? But I am really excited about this. And NFL pre-season starts Sunday so that's awesome as well.

All I can say is: practice. Seriously, take it serious, and practice everyday, for hours. A lot of people talk about talent, but if you really delve into it, sports are all about discipline, practice and hard work. Talent is what gets you in (sometimes), and what edges you over when you've put i enough hours of work.
For positions such as QB, another thing you HAVE to practice in your head is conditioning. Keep thinking about gameplay situations, and training your brain in how to react. You'll see that a lot of times, the same things come up, and being prepared mentally to react properly, avoiding being blindsided by a defensive blooper and getting sacked instead of throwing out the ball or sliding/kneeling, is all the "talent" you need to push you through in the beginning.

I totally agree with you 100%. I am gonna be going 110% everyday. I have tough competition at qb too. And I will get a playbooks Monday. I am excited and pumped for this. And I know I'll push the other qbs to harder and vise versa.

Good luck man, its a great sport, just control temper, be smart and dont draw penalties and give it your all and the coaches will notice.

I am also doing defensive back as well. Qb is the thing I am actually good at so I figured to give it a try. And maybe some special teams I am not sure.

I played some high school football. Don't let size bother you, I was 6'2 and  weighed a monstrous 165lbs as a sophomore my first year and played defensive end and weak side tackle. By my second year out I was a starter on offensive, defensive, kickoff and kick return team, and punt and punt return team.

Good luck,

NK

Maybe its just me but one of the qbs just doesn't like me. There is four of use. On of them keeps to himself it seems most of the time. Then me and the other one talk to eachother quite a bit about what we are doing. And then the other guy doesn't even say hi to me. Idk why though. Oh but I think its great when one of the recievere comes up to me and says, "nice throw or #$&*@! of a throw man." They appricaite my good throws and I appriciate them catching it. :)

You're fighting for his spot. People don't always take that too well.

It's probably a good sign that he doesn't like you. He probably views you as significant competition. Once the season starts, there should be a lot more bonding as a team, and he'll have probably accepted whatever the coach decided.
As far as being a small QB, I don't think there should be any bias against it, especially in High School. If I were a scout for a college team, I'd take a smart QB over The Hulk. It's the Quarterbacks who make smart decisions and have a good passing relationship with their receivers and TEs that win games. Look at Mike Vick in Atlanta (before the dog incident). The guy had a #$&*@! of an arm and explosive speed. He was a lot of fun to watch.. sometimes; however, most of the time we were watching him lead the league in most-sacked-qb (the pocket matters, too, I know) or getting called out for intentional grounding on 3rd down.
Work-out a lot. Get a lot of arm strength and be very alert. Being calm under pressure is key to proper decisiveness. Good luck to you, man. I'm glad you're making the most of your High School experience.

Also, feel free to disregard any advice here. I was a Drum Major when I was in High School and College.

Blocking on kickoffs and punts. Well for the first 5 games I will be number 2 qb. Then game 6 the other qb is gonna be able to play(I don't know why he can't now). But for the mean time I am number 2. And first game this Friday so I am excited.
