Elven telepathy and the Balrog turn-coat
« on: November 05, 2012, 01:00:28 PM »
So here is the elven telepathy deck I built. I used a few tried and true combos in addition to the Kralik (at least I think it was Kralik) mallaron tree trick. Oh and don't tell me i built the moria swarm wrong. It isn't a moria swarm. Its a creation of my own I call Moria Special Forces.

RB and Ring

Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom
atar

Sites
Rohirrim road
Rohirrim camp
hall of kings
osgiliath fallen
city gates
minas tirith seventh circle
Pelennor Grassland
Watcher of Cirith Ungol
Haunted pass

Freeps
Arwen, echo of luthien (start)
Glorfindel, revealed in wrath (start)
Elrond, Venerable Lord x2
Gandalf Manager of wizards x4
Asfaloth, elven steed x2
elven sword x3
gwemegil x2
nenya ring of adamant x2
alliance reforged x3
forearmed x4
glimpse of fate x2
mallorn trees x2
brooding on tomorrow x2
lembas x2

shadow
ancient chieftain x2
goblin flankers x3
goblin patrol troop x3
guard commander x2
host of moria x4
balrog terror of flame and shadow x3
goblin scimitar x3
moria axe x4
goblin armory x3
goblin swarms x2
dark places x3

The telepathy part is standard, use gandy and nenya to get your choice cards to the top of you deck and use forearmed, glorfendil, elrond and who ever else during skirmishes. Ideally you want to put your balrog on top, hence the "turn coat" theme. The problem I encountered was the regroup phase. I always ran out of cards too early so I added a lembas to encourage sprinting.

The shadow is meant just to hit hard and slow down your opponent. You have 3 balrogs so one can be the "turn coat" balrog and help your elves (by the way, it is awesome to watch your opponent's face fall on the floor when you drop his str 16 witch king to 2) while the other 2 rogs give your opponent a run for his money. Dark places will help boost all the unique goblins in the deck and if you are a fan of site manipulation you could do that too. However, there aren't a lot of caves or marshes in movie block.

I played 1 game with this deck and was surprised by how well it cycled. between all the cards that discard, move to the bottom, and are set back on top, it moved pretty quick. By the end of the game I had 17 cards out of my 64. With some practice and gusto I think I could cycle through the deck much more efficiently.

I think that one problem with your shadow is that it has too many high cost minions which may glock your hand. I would replace some by Goblin Runner.

You can also consider cards like Durin's Tower and Fill With Fear.

Troll's Keyward is also not a bad minion with a twilight cost of 3, he can also benefits from Dark Places.

if you are a fan of site manipulation you could do that too. However, there aren't a lot of caves or marshes in movie block.

FYI: "This card can replace sites only in the Fellowship block format."

Fill With Fear is an important card in a Balrog deck, IMO. There are plenty of situations where the only minion you can pull out is the Balrog, and if you're facing an archery deck, it's not hard to kill.

I learned that the hard way! I will certainly add it.

I swapped out mallorn trees for galadriel keeper of nenya and put in courteous halfing for RB. It has worked rather well. I know it isn't ideal but it is a nice change of pace. I also swapped out shadows for a sauron wounding deck. The shadow didn't perform well due to facing an archery based freeps :). But my freeps has been doing very well! I cant believe I have never used manger of wizards before. He is awesome!

Since I dropped my moria shadow I was still using the balrog which isn't a problem since I was using him in conjunction with forearmed and glorfindel's text. However, since I switched to a sauron wounding deck I think it is fitting to drop the balrog and add Sauron. In fact I find it rather poetic. Sauron the turn coat ;)
