Looking to retire GCCG
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:55:55 AM »
The server that hosts this site is having some issues, as people have noticed. I host some other sites as well (for example, websites for my wife) and it's getting a bit frustrating. It took me some time to find a host that would be reliable for TLHH and it will take quite a bit of time that I don't have to move to a new host.

However, it will take far LESS time if I can switch back to a simple, shared hosting solution versus a VPS. Essentially the only thing lost would be GCCG. Does anyone really use GCCG anymore?

Please take a moment to comment and vote in this thread.

If there are few objections, I'll shut down GCCG and move to a new server for better stability and performance. I would be more than happy to send an archive of the GCCG server data to anyone else if they wish to run it themselves.

Also, I would be interested to hear if Gemp users are having trouble with images loading. I suspect the problem lies elsewhere -- i.e. images work fine but not the forums/wiki.

Thanks!

I say keep the site alive, even if it means killing GCCG. It's better to have a gathering place for the community, than to have options to play and have everyone scattered so that no one can FIND each other to play.

I wasn't planning on killing the website, though I do want it to work reliably. :)

I think Gemp has done to gccg what gccg did to sda.

Getting rid of gccg wouldn't bother me as I have not been on there since finding gemp.

Images on tlhh have been loading slowly for me for some time now.. Not sure if that's what you want to know or not, just thought I'd mention it.

That's very good to know, yes. Makes me wonder if I'm having problems due to the increased popularity of Gemp... certainly this site didn't have as high of a bandwidth usage before.

Never played GCCG, found Gemp first.

Images on Gemp sometimes load slowly for me, but they do always eventually load. I think this is moreso due to my own slow internet connection.

I've never played on GCCG either. And the images on Gemp always load fine, even when this site isn't working.

I'll miss gccg for nostalgic reasons, but Gemp has done a great job improving my online gaming experience. It is time to move on to bigger and better things ;)

I have used GCCG for some time and i did like it very much, recently i haven't that much but with the creation of The Hobbit TCG which i am doing with Ray Liu, I wanted to load in our images and use some other set for the placeholders, to get some playtesting done. So in that way i would be disappointed iff the GCCG server would be shut down. I always found it a great program to use, and Haven't concidered Gemp yet. Might take a look at it soon.

I do think this Site is the best to keep up and running what ever it takes, there will be a tribute in The Hobbit TCG for this site. (spoiler alert)

Best Regards,

You might want to take a look at LackeyCCG. It's been a long time since I've used it, but I imagine it would be a good fit for custom sets.

Since at this point we have about 5/6 of the votes as "No" and 1/6 as "Rarely," I'll be looking into possibly moving to a new host. If/when it happens, expect downtime for a few hours.

The move to a new server is done and GCCG still works! Might not have to shut it down after all. :)

I've added a notice to GCCG to advise players that the community has moved on to Gemp. I don't foresee any reason to shut down GCCG if the new servers works out and I'm more than happy to leave it open for the few players who use it or as a "backup" plan.

Not sure if anyone cares, but GCCG is currently down because of the server move mess but will be re-enabled shortly.

GCCG server should be back up and working. Let me know (PM me) if not.
