Multi-Crossover Set
« on: March 06, 2013, 06:04:54 PM »
Alright, so I was going to try this a while ago, when I was last here. Since then, I've lost my notes - but came up with new ones that should work better.

First off, this set is based on crossovers - please don't complain about that aspect. If you don't know (or don't like) the source, but can review purely mechanically, I warmly welcome that.
Of course, if you can comment on the flavor as well, that's very welcome too.

I am still looking for two universes to add in, so if you also have a suggestion, feel free to make it - I'm looking for ones that feature a group who are used to going on an adventure (or journey, or trip) through dangerous to deadly (or worse) locations to complete some sort of quest or mission. The world does not actually need to have a Ring analog - I have room for two Rings, and I've already got them slotted in. But having a decent choice for Ring-bearer in a mechanical sense would be very helpful.
I'd like to wait on revealing which others I've chosen until I have a decent amount of cards made for them - partly in case I (or you) come up with a better idea.

The idea that I'm going for is that this would be a (mostly) fixed set featuring nine decks that include two of each non-Ring analog card, making for a 35/34 card deck and a site path that features 5 sites from their own universe, 3 sites that are shared between all nine decks, and 1 site chosen at random from another universe (of two that will be designed to be somewhat generic to culture).
This means that each will have a Ring-bearer of some sort, 17 unique Free Peoples cards, 17 unique Shadow cards, and 5 sites - 3 including some sort of reference to a culture from that deck, while 2 do not. Each deck would have either a Ring-analog (card that functions as The One Ring) or The Ruling Ring from an earlier or a later set.

That brings the full total to 365 cards, which is a really nice number.

But I should really start with some actual cards, so we'll go with a pair that really started this whole idea to reform in my head... (although I'll likely post them again later, in order to make a card list here)

[2] •Finn, Hero of Ooo [Candy Kingdom]
Companion • Man
5 Strength
3 Vitality
7 Resistance
Ranger.
Each unbound companion is resistance +1 (and strength +1 if that companion is a [Candy Kingdom] character).
'I'll slay anything that's evil. That's my deal!'

[3] •Jake, Big Brother [Candy Kingdom]
Companion • Dog
7 Strength
3 Vitality
6 Resistance
Finn's twilight cost is -1.
Skirmish: Add a threat to make an unbound companion strength +X, where X is the number of threats you can spot, if Jake has resistance X.
'Oh, I'm coming with you... if only to be disruptive and obnoxious.'

If you're wondering about wording, the idea is that they should be able to function with other cards, so I wanted to keep the rewording to a minimum.

Next post will finish up the starting fellowship.

I would suggest the Journey to the West universe, although you might have never heard about it. It is the most famous story in China and is also known elsewhere in Asia.

The story is simple, you have a monk who has to reach the West, and he is accompanied by 3 disciples (4 if you count the horse). They encounter many monsters on their way.

Thanks for the suggestion - you're right that I hadn't heard of it, and from the brief look I got at it, the story does seem like the type of story I'm looking for.

That is a good point to make - if I know the source, it much more likely to be picked, and ones with a fairly small amount of material are next in line.

But as I promised, the starting fellowship...

[3] •Simon, Bearer of Ice and Snow [Pre-War]
Companion • Man
5 Strength
3 Vitality
7 Ringed Resistance
Ring-bound. At the start of each skirmish involving Simon, wound two companions or add 3 burdens.
Skirmish: Discard a card and exert Simon to exert a minion he is skirmishing (or, if that card was an [Ice Kingdom] card, wound that minion instead).
'I know my mind is changing... but I'm already gone too far to know what to do.'

•The Magical Crown, Scandinavian Curse [Ring]
+1 Strength
While wearing The Magical Crown, each time bearer would take a wound, add a burden instead.
Skirmish: Add a burden to wear The Magical Crown and heal bearer.
'I jokingly put it on my head just for a laugh or something. ...I quickly took it off, and saw my fiancee in front of me, looking at me with such contempt!'

[1] •Marceline, Little Girl [Pre-War]
Companion • Man
4 Strength
2 Vitality
6 Resistance
Ring-bound. You may add 2 threats instead of paying Marceline's twilight cost.
Each time Marceline would take a wound, add [2] to heal her.
'I know you're going to need me here with you.'

Alright then, I'm hoping to be able to get a couple of these up regularly, so today's cards are a possession with two flavor texts and the another is an event that I'm not sure how to word better.

[2] •Demon Sword [Candy Kingdom]
Possession • Hand Weapon
+2 Strength
To play, spot a Dog. Bearer must be Finn.
Each time a threat is added, you may discard the top card of your deck. If that card is a Free Peoples card, Finn is strength +1 until the regroup phase. If that card is a Shadow card, Finn is damage +1 until the regroup phase.
'...the family sword. It's made out of - babies.'

[2] Another Way [Candy Kingdom]
Event • Skirmish
Spot a companion and exert a [Candy Kingdom] character assigned to a skirmish to have that companion replace that character in this skirmish. One possession borne by that character may be treated as if it was borne by that companion.

(and the alternate/real flavor text of Demon Sword - 'You're going to do great things in this world.')
As for the event, it's specifically supposed to function with the Demon Sword, allowing someone to 'take' the sword to fight instead of Finn.

I think today we'll go with a pair sites to show what exactly I mean by my descriptions of the possible sites.

First, each deck gets 3 sites that other decks won't be inclined to use. It might be possible, but will have a reference to a culture (or something similarly specific) included in that deck.

Our example is the base of operations for Finn and Jake, where they go to relax and recover. The (mostly) safe haven of the...

(S) Tree Fort [3]
Dwelling. The twilight cost of each [Candy Kingdom] condition is -1 until the regroup phase.
<---

Then there are an additional two sites that are able to be used by just about any deck. Some will find it more useful than others, but they should have some positive effect in any of the decks, as one will be chosen from these sites among all the possible (except the two already included) at random - this also means that as I build decks, I'll have to watch the Shadow Numbers to make sure that any of the combinations will create a legal deck.

This site is spawned from the same episode as the sword, and is named after the episode as well. Welcome to...

(S) Dad's Dungeon [1]
Underground. The first minion played during each Shadow phase is not roaming until the end of the turn.

Well, being Adventure Time, how could I not include some princesses in the mix. Even better, when I was starting to figure out the full fellowship, they happened to have two episodes right near each other that suggested exactly who to use.

[4] •Bubblegum, Peebles [Candy Kingdom]
Companion • Candy
7 Strength
4 Vitality
8 Resistance
At the start of the fellowship phase, add [3] to draw a card.
Assignment: Assign a minion with strength less than the number of cards in your hand to skirmish Bubblegum. At the start of that skirmish phase, you may exert that minion for each other character assigned to a skirmish.
'You think we're intellectual equals? ...I know a thing or two about building a body out of bio-mass, and you don't leave your heart exposed!"

[2] •Flame Princess, New to Adventure [Fire Kingdom]
Companion • Elemental
5 Strength
3 Vitality
5 Resistance
Fire.
Maneuver:
Add [1] to wound a non-Fire minion. Any Shadow player may discard three cards (or one [Fire Kingdom] card) or remove [3] to make you place two wounds on companions.
'Do we need a torch? I'm sorta made of fire.'

I'm trying to figure out how to make that ability work - in moderation, it supports the fighters and allows them to kill off dangerous (particularly, fierce) minions while causing serious losses to make it hurt the party. In excess, it will cause nearly as much hurt to her allies as to the enemies.
I'm just worried that it would team up with a large fellowship that focuses on healing in order to kill off anyone that is played. Then again, maybe the option to save up the twilight pool from the first move is enough, slowing them to a crawl.

I am considering changing the [Pre-War] culture to [Mushroom War]. Just had the thought when thinking about culture symbols.

Alright, so today's cards are the support for Marceline...

First is a connection to the child featured in this deck's starting fellowship...

(0) •Hambo [Pre-War]
Possession
+1 Resistance
Bearer must be Marceline. To play, spot Simon.
Regroup: Wound Marceline to take a Free Peoples possession into your hand from play.
'Hambo is my only friend. See?'

and an event for the older Marceline, who has learned to exert herself for that first wound so that her healing isn't made uneffective the first time she's wounded. I'm considering making another split culture ([Fire Kingdom] is going to be) and if I do, this would be that culture instead (which hasn't come up yet).

(0) Just a Laugh [Candy Kingdom]
Event • Fellowship
Exert 2 Ring-bound companions (or exert Marceline) to remove a threat. If no minions were played this turn, you may play this event during the regroup phase.
'I need you to strangle some pixies... Strangling pixies is hardcore evil.'

Today features another episode-name in the form of more Marceline support. This time however, it has a few other abilities.

[1] I Remember You [Pre-War]
Condition
Plays on Marceline, Simon or Ice King. Limit 1 per character.
While you can spot another Marceline, Simon, or Ice King, whenever bearer would be killed, return it to owner's hand instead.
Maneuver: Play this condition. Until the end of turn, bearer is strength -1 for each other Marceline, Simon, or Ice King you can spot.
'This magic keeps me alive, but it's making me crazy, and I need to save you, but who's going to save me?'

And a little bit of home for the Fire Princess...

(0) Scented Candle [Fire Kingdom]
Possession • Candle
Bearer must be Flame Princess.
Whenever the fellowship moves to a site, remove [1].
While you can spot a [Fire Kingdom] minion, Flame Princess is resistance -1.
