A Challenge...
« on: March 31, 2013, 06:40:10 AM »
Hey, all.
I've always been fascinated with minimalist decks, that is, decks made from a very limited amount of cards.
So, I am offering a challenge for any skilled deck builders:  to make a full deck using cards from only the Black Riders Set.  (RB, Ring, and sites are exceptions)
This deck must also be able to win a game on gemp... In any format it fits.
First person to post a deck with a replay link wins... Extra points if you can make said deck using <36 total rares... Like a booster box.
Good luck!

There's a slight issue with this challenge.  There aren't any ring-bearers in Black Rider set, so you can't make any legal deck using the cards only from that set.

lol, true...
sorry bout that, you can use any RB/Ring and any sites in the format you wish to play.
Meant to include...

Also, this wouldn't be much of a challenge with any other set, would it?
;)

hmm...  No comments either means people aren't interested, or no one can win...
Doubt it's the second.

Challenge accepted:
Black Rider Deck
Ring-bearer: Frodo, Protected by Many
Ring: The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Adventure deck:
The Great Gates
Fortress of Orthanc
Hill of Sight
Slag Mounds
Ettenmoors
Osgiliath Reclaimed
Wold Battlefield
Heights of Isengard
The Prancing Pony

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
2x Gandalf, The White Rider
2x Boromir, Defender of Minas Tirith
1x Faramir, Dunadan of Gondor
2x Bilbo, Melancholy Hobbit
1x Pippin, Hobbit of Some Intelligence
1x Blade of Gondor, Sword of Boromir
1x Faramir's Sword
2x Mysterious Wizard
3x The Terror of His Coming
4x No Worse for Wear
4x Salve
2x Watch and Wait
3x Invigorated
4x Tireless
4x Sudden Fury

Shadow Draw Deck:
4x Crazed Hillman
3x Crooked Townsman
4x Dunlending Zealot
4x Frenzied Dunlending
2x Mumak Rider
4x The Mouth of Sauron, Messenger of Mordor
1x Messenger's Mount
4x War Trident
4x Countless Companies
3x Goaded to War
3x Trail of Terror

The Freeps is just about surviving really. Start faramir and pippin, and bid 1/2 to try and go second (removing one with pippin), so you can control the sitepath for your shadow. Bilbo combines with no worse for wear and sudden fury, while gandalf can step in in an emergency. The Gondor guys are generally good, and you can survive.

The shadow is fun. Abuse the mouth of Sauron to pull out your conditions, in order to add twilight so you can abuse trail of terror, combined with War trident (recycle with countless companies) cheap minions to make it easier to spot 3 for Trail of terror.

Thoughts on the challenge, Evil Men, Orc and Nazgul all have a reasonable selection of cards for your shadow, uruks aren't terrible either with the limited healing. Freeps are just plain bad. No way to win skirmishes really, as there aren't many good events or posessions.

Looks fantastic... I came up with a similar freeps design, using rumil and orophin to provide some archery and then be sacrificed, allowing the gondor duo to survive with frodo.
I like the men strategy, particularly the abusing of mouth of sauron.

As to the challenge feedback, I chose this set mainly for that reason:  trying to see if a good offense could make up for a terrible defense.  The whole idea, with any freeps strategy, is to never double, and try to take the opponent out with only shadow, by site 6 most likely.
Thanks again for the reply, glad to see it was possible.  ;)

P.S.: Now, if you could win a standard/expanded game on gemp with it...  Lol
