Some thoughts about the code of conduct
« on: June 15, 2013, 09:47:19 AM »
Hi folks!

Just wanted to share some thoughts on the latest changes on gemp, featuring warnings and bans.
Cos, I really apreciate your effort, this changes had to happen, and gemp will be a better place if we face
bad sportsmanship as an organized community.

I was just thinking that the code of conduct is a bit harse (if my spelling is correct :) )
I mean we are all grown ups, I understand that offensive language cannot be tollerated, and its not fun at all
to play against a rager (not ranger ).
But I am sure we can use some slang talking with resposnibility and without being offensive.
I mean its different to say f... you than f... my deck for failing.

A friend of mine got a warning couple of days a go because when he failed to join the tournament on time or
something he typed #$&*@!! with a smile.
I am pretty sure noone got offended , and I even recall saying I am sorry imediattely after CoS (who was online) said "watch your language"

Yes I know, a warning doesn't mean anything , its very far away from a suspession, but this is not kindergarden, no one likes taking warnings.
We have to make sure that our progress on building this code of conduct doesnt mess with the fun part of the game, and its not fun if it feels like the teacher will spank you if you missbehave.

Just to clear things out, I am speaking of slang talking, not offensive language. And I am sure that there is no bad intentions, just making some friendly talk here.

Afterall we are a friendly community , pretty small , we have to back each other.
Peace
Judge

The issue isn't with slang. It is specifically with 4-letter words. There are a few fathers on GEMP who would like for their children to play without being exposed to R rated language. If we want GEMP to grow encouraging children to play is a must. To do that the code of conduct encourages a family friendly environment.

hmm can't say much to that, that's a noble thought.
Although I doubt anyone will ever manage to learn this game to his kid,
I would really be thrilled if that happens.
Anyway s... and f... is a common word in tv or internet, I don't really think I can make my boy avoid it, so I m just trying to make him understand what's right and what's wrong, or better yet, to curve a judgement of his one.
Ofc I do understand and respect parents that don't agree, I just think its overpretective, our world is not perfect

My son has learned the game, and is 7, but I'm still debating making him his own account and playing against me without me peeking over his shoulder.  Especially since a few days ago I was called some nasty names by a player who played against me in league.  He didn't like seeing Enquea the 6th time.

And, aren't you glad as a parent (not a player) to not have someone else impose limits and morality over us to follow?  I am!   You have your opinion, as do we all.  And yes, I have not had cable/broadcast television for about 6 years.  Overprotective?  Maybe, but I don't buy into mass consciousness worldview being forced upon my children via the most common outlet, television (we are a choosy Netflix family).  And yep, we don't use that kind of language around our house, our associates, when we conduct business, and even my friends respect me on that when I hang with them.  While my children do know *of* the words, they are in the habit of not using them, something I think will benefit them as it has benefited myself.  Using the inappropriate words at the wrong time has gotten people fired at my current place of employment, it is not unlike being fired for posting a "bikini and beer" picture on Facebook (which has also happened).  I do credit some of my success to not having used foul language.  (Although, you might have seen me type 'rassum frassum' a few times in chat... none of us are perfect, true).

I applaud the site for attempting to implement a CoC, but if the language gets too annoying, I'll leave myself.

Just to make it clear, I am not judging the Judge.  Just letting you know I support the CoC.

I applaud you CoS for helping to enforce it.  Although I dislike playing your turn 1 Sam decks, I appreciate your work :p
