Towers Sealed League Strategies on Gemp
« on: March 08, 2014, 01:57:12 PM »
What do experienced players think are the best strategies to use when playing the Towers Sealed League on Gemp? I've put this in Valinor (and not Towers), because the Gemp starter decks are not quite standard (2x Southron Commander, for example). So, let's pursue a number of questions about this type of league, to hopefully give newer players some insight into it:

1. All things being equal, which starter deck do you think is smartest to pick each series? (see poll at the top) Why? The contents of each starter can be seen here:

http://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php/topic,9119.0/topicseen.html

2. Exactly what is different about the Gemp versions of these starters? Is it just the 2x Southron Commander, or are there other differences as well? Do these differences change each League, or are the Gemp versions of the starters pretty static? Does anyone have an actual starter deck list for the Gemp versions of these Sealed League starters?

3. What are some other useful strategies to heed, when preparing for this meta? For example, I've heard it is smart to open your boosters before you choose your starter, in case you get a great rare that works better with one starter than another. What are some other strategies?

Hmm, I appreciate those voting, but not much discussion! Here's my (admittedly limited) experience:

1. Which deck to pick each series? For Series 1, I think the Aragorn Deck is clearly superior to the Theoden deck. The Theoden deck just seems generally weak to me. For Series 2, I think the Legolas Deck is the better choice (particularly if you went with Aragorn in Series 1). I myself picked the Eowyn Deck in Series 2, and immediately regretted my decision as soon as I started playing with it. I think the Legolas Deck really adds the advantage of archery and usable powerups. It also offers support cards for your 2x Southron Commander, which can be key to either knocking a large fellowship down to size, or overwhelming a Frodo with a Hobbit Sword and/or Severed His Bonds. For Series 3, I think the Witch-king Deck is the smartest choice, primarily because of Orc Insurgent. I myself went with the Faramir Deck this Series, and while it wasn't bad, I suspect the Witch-king starter may have been a stronger choice.

2. What's different about the Gemp versions? Well, as far as what I've noticed, the only thing different is that both starters in Series 1 come with 2x Southron Commander. I think that's the only difference, but I"m not positive.

3. Strategies? Obviously a lot of this is going to be dependent upon what cards you pull. I was lucky enough to get a Constantly Threatening, so it was a pretty obvious strategy to build the deck around. I feel like I did better going second, but then my fellowship was relatively weak and could not move very quickly. I think strategy generally needs to be kept pretty simple for Sealed, you won't be able to swing a bunch of fancy card combos. One thing that did work well for me: I got a few of those Uruks that prevent hobbits from being discarded. In conjunction with Southron Commander, this generally means I can force a large fellowship to discard some guys that really count, rather than those pesky hobbits. It seems like winning a game in Sealed normally comes down to swarm, which generally means dropping some kind of bomb on them fairly late in the game. So you want to maintain good cycling, keep your fellowship alive, but primarily build up the perfect hand to bomb your opponent with.

That's my advice! But then, I'm currently ranked 49th! :)

Anyone else?

I'll share what I did, and my builds over the 4 series.

First, here are the rares I pulled (note rares with a * are what I pulled in series 4)

Free Peoples
1x Erethon, Naith Lieutenant
1x Skinbark, Fladrif
1x Hama, Doorward of Theoden
1x Elrond, Keeper of Vilya
1x Baruk Khazad
1x Toss Me*
1x Break the Charge
1x These Are My People
1x Get On and Get Away
1x Enraged
1x Help in Doubt and Need*

Shadow:
1x Hill Clan*
1x Saruman, Black Traitor
1x Army of Haradrim
1x Southron Veterans
1x Gate Troll
3x Grishnakh, Orc Captain (1 copy*)
1x Hides*
1x Rest While You Can
1x Men of Harad
1x Dead Marshes*

Here are my deck listings for each series:

Series 1:
TT Sealed - Week 1

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Tired Traveller
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Adventure deck:
The Riddermark
Rohirrim Village
Westemnet Plains
White Rocks
Hornburg Courtyard
Hornburg Armory
Hornburg Causeway
Ring of Isengard
Orthanc Library

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
3x Gimli, Unbidden Guest
1x Erethon, Naith Lieutenant
2x Legolas, Elven Comrade
3x Aragorn, Wingfoot
2x Éowyn, Lady of Rohan
1x Merry, Learned Guide
1x Pippin, Woolly-footed Rascal
1x Treebeard, Oldest Living Thing
2x Ranger's Sword, Blade of Aragorn
2x Hobbit Sword
4x Best Company
3x Knocked on the Head
1x Mind Your Own Affairs
3x Severed His Bonds
2x Swiftly and Softly

Shadow Draw Deck:
3x Band of Wild Men
4x Dunlending Madman
4x Dunlending Pillager
4x Dunlending Robber
1x Dunlending Warrior
2x Hillman Tribe
1x Uruk Besieger
1x Uruk Pursuer
1x Easterling Axeman
2x Southron Commander
1x Iron Axe
1x Burn Every Village
2x Dark Fury
2x Death to the Strawheads
2x Men of Rhun

Notice that I actually had a little site control in here to make BEV into a +4.  I would start Legs, Merry, Pippin and bid like 6 to go first.  I'd pull Aragorn, and gimli was my primary fighter.  His damage +1 helped to clear minions for reckless doubling.  Mind Your Own Affairs was huge.

My Shadow was mostly dunlending win and skirmish again guys.  I had the uruk beseiger in there just to loop with the site control.  Uruk anti-hobbit discard to pair with commander.  Two Southron Pumps to surprise freeps with.  I don't think it ever worked though :(

TT Sealed - Week 2

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Tired Traveller
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Adventure deck:
The Riddermark
Rohirrim Village
Westemnet Plains
White Rocks
Hornburg Courtyard
Hornburg Armory
Hornburg Causeway
Ring of Isengard
Palantir Chamber

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
1x Gimli, Unbidden Guest
1x Legolas, Archer of Mirkwood
3x Lorien Swordsman
3x Aragorn, Heir of Elendil
1x Éowyn, Lady of Rohan
1x Treebeard, Oldest Living Thing
2x Elven Bow
2x Elven Sword
2x Ranger's Sword, Blade of Aragorn
2x Hobbit Sword
1x Baruk Khazad
2x Quick As May Be
4x Valor
3x Severed His Bonds
2x Swiftly and Softly
1x Citadel of the Stars

Shadow Draw Deck:
3x Band of Wild Men
2x Dunlending Pillager
4x Dunlending Robber
1x Army of Haradrim
4x Desert Soldier
2x Southron Commander
2x Southron Traveler
1x Southron Veterans
3x Mumak
2x Dark Fury
2x Death to the Strawheads
2x Men of Rhun
3x On the March

Chose the Legolas starter for the stuff to pair with southron commander, because huge fellowships are very common in this league.  My shadow turned into a dunlending fight again and southrons with mumaks focus.  Lots of pumps.  Pumps were huge this series.

My freeps transitioned more into a Legolas centric build... started Legolas and Gimli and pulled defender + 1 aragorn most of the time.  Great wounding potential in this deck.   Took out the hobbits completely but thought hard about it for Mind Your Own Affairs which is just amazing against the very popular dunlending.

TT Sealed - Week 3

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Tired Traveller
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Adventure deck:
The Riddermark
Rohirrim Village
Golden Hall
Ered Nimrais
Hornburg Courtyard
Hornburg Armory
Hornburg Causeway
Ring of Isengard
Palantir Chamber

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
4x Ent Avenger
1x Host of Fangorn
1x Quickbeam, Bregalad
1x Skinbark, Fladrif
1x Treebeard, Guardian of the Forest
1x Aragorn, Wingfoot
1x Éowyn, Lady of Rohan
1x Merry, Learned Guide
1x Pippin, Woolly-footed Rascal
4x Hobbit Sword
4x Boomed and Trumpeted
2x Knocked on the Head
1x Mind Your Own Affairs
3x Severed His Bonds
2x Swiftly and Softly
4x Ent Moot

Shadow Draw Deck:
1x Gollum, Nasty Treacherous Creature
4x Dunlending Brigand
3x Dunlending Madman
2x Southron Commander
4x Gate Trooper
4x Gate Veteran
2x Grishnakh, Orc Captain
1x Orc Cutthroat
3x Orc Insurgent
3x Orc Pursuer
3x Orc Runner
1x On the March
1x Evil-smelling Fens

In series two, I pulled Grishnakh x 2 in my boosters.  But I didn't have nearly enough Sauron support to make him work.  Series 3 I transitioned to pure Sauron Swarm.  My freeps went back to Hobbits with Wingfoot.  Basically, this deck was cheap guys that could draw cards (the dunlending guys can draw at that site 8).  Grishnak with the Palantir Chamber banks minions for later or give me draws.  This series I had quite a few shadow wins, but I still had some free people wins.

Boomed and Trumpted and Wingfoot made for some early doubling.  I bid 3 every game, which was actually a common bid - but I didn't want to guarantee 2 minions at 9, so I settled for 3, with Mind Your Own Affairs being an emergency card (which I don't recall using).

Series 4:

TT Sealed - Week 4

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Tired Traveller
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Adventure deck:
The Riddermark
Rohirrim Village
Golden Hall
Ered Nimrais
Hornburg Courtyard
Hornburg Armory
Hornburg Causeway
Ring of Isengard
Palantir Chamber

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
4x Ent Avenger
1x Host of Fangorn
1x Quickbeam, Bregalad
1x Skinbark, Fladrif
1x Treebeard, Guardian of the Forest
1x Aragorn, Wingfoot
1x Éowyn, Lady of Rohan
1x Merry, Learned Guide
1x Pippin, Woolly-footed Rascal
4x Hobbit Sword
3x Boomed and Trumpeted
2x Knocked on the Head
1x Mind Your Own Affairs
4x Severed His Bonds
2x Swiftly and Softly
4x Ent Moot

Shadow Draw Deck:
1x Gollum, Nasty Treacherous Creature
4x Dunlending Brigand
3x Dunlending Madman
1x Uruk Pursuer
2x Southron Commander
4x Gate Trooper
4x Gate Veteran
3x Grishnakh, Orc Captain
3x Orc Insurgent
3x Orc Pursuer
3x Orc Runner
1x Evil-smelling Fens

Only thing I think I changed was putting in my 3rd Grishnakh, and the Uruk Pursuer to surprise hobbits with the commander.  I think that only worked 1 time! All 9 of my wins were shadow swarm.  Sometimes, I'd swarm without even really trying.  What I mean is I'd be ahead in the site path, and would want to clear my hand, so I'd start playing minions to draw cards, and before I knew it I had 10 minions on board.  It was crazy!

My hardest challenges in Series 4 were definitely IsenOrc decks, you had to survive a swarm, and ontop of that they had all those regroup wounding.  Boomed and Trumpeted helped a little, but that was probably my most difficult matchup.

Not sure if I'd ever not go this path in future leagues, unless my rares were unfathomably awesome.  Even than, I really like the Sauron draw minions, and they work well in this environment.  I could always spot 6 companions, and 5 burdens wasn't unheard of (especially with Grishnakh x 3!).

In Series 3 and 4, it seemed to me like the strongest FP sides I saw were either a mix of gimli and Elf archery, or Aragorn and Ents. Those that managed to draw a defender +1 Aragorn or a Sam did particularly well. Most of my opponents bid competitively to go first.

Shadow sides mostly relied on various swarms, with the Sauron stuff being particularly effective, IMO.

My own deck ended up being Ringbound Rangers/Discarding Hobbits with a little Smeagol action, and a Shadow of mostly cheap fierce Dunland with a little support from other cultures, and the Constantly Threatening trick. It performed VERY poorly in Series 4. I never seemed to have enough twilight to do a proper swarm, and my fellowship could not move quickly.

Surprised im the first one to pick aragorn-eowyn-witch king.. If you pick up the legolas starter, you're most likely left with a completely useless shadow side, while warg-riders are better than expected, especially with the archery coming online.

The Legolas starter Southron shadow is very useful. The format's crowd control is Southron Commander. With no support, it's not a great threat. Once you have Frodo with Hobbit Sword, he can block Commander (probably with a pump in hand in case the shadow player has a [Raider] pump). But once you get the Southrons starter, you can play Southron Commander on a Mumak, which makes him strength 13 and fierce, this is way better crowd control.

That's a good point, but I still think that shadow is very weak, you can run 6-7 companions most of the time and just discard ur unbound hobbits if a commander with mumak comes out, if you dont have stealths stacked up ofc.
