A few questions about the game, prices and people.
« on: June 21, 2014, 11:11:21 PM »
Hello everyone!
I'm a former active player and collector of Decipher's LotR TCG and I posses a few hundred rare, R+ and RF cards. In the last few days I am thinking about selling the cards and I would like to know what you think about price progress and investment possibilities of these cards. Did the price go up with time? Can the price gretly incerease in near or far future (for example 10 years from now)? Are there any tournaments actively providing prizes for competitive players? And is there anyone actually still playing or collecting?

Plenty of people are still playing and collecting, but very few organized settings appear to be active.

As far as the market goes, you'll just have to jump on eBay and take a look around; it's always possible that the game's popularity will increase in the near future and so value will go up, but by my estimate the critical mass of popularity + rarity was a couple years ago; since then the popularity has dipped enough that prices have also fallen somewhat.

I agree with TelTura, the market has kinda slipped a bit lately, but think it will go back up again as time goes on. In the future there will be less and less cards because collectors will complete collections and in general cards will get destroyed or lost. The movies will spark peoples interest or cause others to remember the game and want to pick it back up. So maybe not today or tomorrow but in the future there should be a market for them, they are pretty cool looking and the game itself is pretty interesting and challenging.

I agree with TelTura and Legolis. The market is winding down a bit and it might be a good idea to either liquidate your collection as quickly as possible (and hope for the best in terms of return) or hold on to it for the long run.

My advice: Decide what you want to keep for sentimental reasons and get rid of the rest. Hang on to a couple of cards from movie block to build decks with, if you decide to pick up the game again later.

Ironically, the less balanced and well-designed cards tend to be, the more valuable they tend to be, and vice versa. So, if you are sitting on cards from set 11 and onwards, especially sets 15-18, the more money you will get for them, whereas cards especially from the first six sets hold little value in the secondary market- unless they are the foiled versions -, yet provide the most fun when playing.

I hope this helps.
