SFTF Tanks/Fierce Nazgul
« on: September 17, 2014, 10:20:38 AM »
Here is a deck currently being used in the Expanded League by xXx. He is currently ranked 1st with it, and only lost two games out of 10! I put this list together using a replay of my game with him (which I lost). The list should be very close to accurate:

Starting:
Ring-bearer: Frodo, Courteous Halfling
Ring: The One Ring, The Great Ring
1x Brand, King of Dale
1x Gandalf, Leader of Men
1x Smeagol, Slinker

Adventure deck:
Buckland Homestead
The Angle
Neekerbreekers' Bog
Cavern Entrance
Mere of Dead Faces
Mithlond
The Prancing Pony
Heights of Isengard
Sirannon Ruins

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
1x Erland, Dale Counselor
1x Grimbeorn, Beorning Chieftain
1x Radagast, The Brown
1x Treebeard, Enraged Shepherd
1x Aragorn, Thorongil
2x Barliman Butterbur, Prancing Pony Proprietor
1x Beorning Axe
1x Shadowfax, Greatest of the Mearas
1x Aragorn's Bow, Ranger's Longbow
1x Gandalf's Staff
1x Anduril, Sword That Was Broken
2x Look to My Coming
1x Roll of Thunder
3x Saved From the Fire
2x Servant of the Secret Fire
3x Speak "Friend" and Enter
3x Terrible and Evil
2x Traveled Leader
1x Spirit of the White Tree
1x Pallando, Far-travelling One

Shadow Draw Deck:
4x Black Rider
2x The Witch-king, Captain of the Nine Riders
3x Úlairë Cantëa, Faster Than Winds
2x Úlairë Enquëa, Sixth of the Nine Riders
3x Úlairë Lemenya, Eternally Threatening
2x Úlairë Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders
2x Úlairë Nertëa, Dark Horseman
3x Úlairë Toldëa, Black Shadow
2x Ring of Terror
1x Morgul Gates
3x Too Great and Terrible
1x Flung Into the Fray
3x Moving This Way
1x Out of Sight and Shot
1x Saruman, Servant of Sauron

Here's the replay:

This is a lean deck, just 66 cards. Of course the FP strategy is pretty straightforward: Set up with SFTF, then tank through and manipulate sites.

The Shadow strategy is Fierce Nazgul. These aren't Forest Nazgul, but they are still tough, and they don't need forests to make them work well. Probably the most interesting thing is the heavy use of Too Great and Terrible, recurring with Úlairë Toldëa, Black Shadow, which really gives this deck an advantage against Gandalf decks.

I was really hopeful that people won't start using Too Great and Terrible... Oh well, time to get that Unequaled Steed on my list.

Nazgul definitely shines in Expanded. There are multiple strategies to develop with them and you can heavily, heavily abuse your opponent's fellowship whatever type.
They have always been the leader in crowd control.
Nertea gave them easy mono-culture hate and help with tank companions.
Easiest site manipulation.
Easily take advantage of burdens and threats.
Possession hate.

The only thing they aren't incredible at is taking down conditions. However, they are easily supplemented with Grima, Servant of Another Master and Saruman's Power.

Just plain mean.
