If I can remember correctly, back with Cobra Cards, gold used to be used as a type of trading rep. We would give each other gold for successful trades, so people with lots of gold were very trustworthy. It would also be used for other things like as a prize for dream card contests and whatnot (iirc, sometimes prizes would be like 10 gold or 5, etc). I think you could buy things with gold on the old site too, many of which were cosmetic additions to your profile. Way back, the gold system worked differently too. You didn't upvote or downvote a post. You gave gold directly to someone's profile. That also meant there was no way to remove someone's gold (unless they bought something back on Cobra Cards).
