corsair possession discard
« on: March 15, 2015, 12:32:09 PM »
I have played against corsair possession discard twice during my LOTR career. They don't seem beatable. What are some strategies to use against corsairs?

Have about a billion copies of Elven Brooch, and you will be okay.

Play decks that don't rely heavily on possessions - use artifacts and conditions instead.
Play decks that do a lot of directed wounding with cards like Legolas Greenleaf, Eowyn Lady of Ithilien, Quick As May Be, etc.

As much as I hate to say it, Galadriel, Lady Redeemed.
All cards do what they say, no more, no less.

Derufin is good too.  With Derufin and Elrond HtGG to heal in regroup phase you can keep their boats off the table.

Blood Runs Chill + Ring of Fury (even better with Gimli, Feared Axeman + Lord of Moria) and you'll sink their ships ;).

Derufin can be aided by the Seeing Stone of Orthanc and Ranger of Osgiliath to have those exact 5 cards in hand anytime you need it. With these 2 [Gondor] cards you can even try some nasty initiative tricks, like The Shire Countryside to heal Derufin or Aragorn, Driven by Need over and over again in regroup...

Simple as Derufin seems, he does the job quite well if you don't want to go God-mode with dwarves or Galadriel ;).

I never play rohan. They need too many possessions. I just rely too much on possessions. Of course, you cant plan for every contingency. If i play a condition heavy deck, suddenly i am at the mercy of saruman's power. Build your deck and plan for the best I suppose. Thanks for the advice.

In my experience Derufin is kinda hit or miss. If they get their Ships of Great Draught out retrieving each other, often times they can get stuff out faster than Derufin can get rid of it.

The only way to actually "stop" Corsair Marauder, as far as I know, is by the old [Shire] method of Shadowplay + Unheeded. Using that, you can kill a Corsair Marauder before his text can trigger.

Alternatively, if you're running heavy [Gandalf], you can load up with Roll of Thunder to ditch his Black Sails of Umbar, and A New Light to get Corsair Marauder out of his hand before he can play him. But again, hit or miss.

I like to use a Madril deck in Expanded, and what I do when I'm encountering a Corsair deck, is I switch to "Corsair Mode." This entails a number of things:

1. Assume that any possession you have, you probably won't keep more than a turn. So, don't depend on them. Also assume that Madril won't be able to make stuff roaming, because of Ships of Great Draught.
2. Get out Throne of Minas Tirith asap, along with some conditions to put tokens on. A set up Throne of Minas Tirith can disable a Corsair deck pretty quickly.
3. Get out Don't Look At Them asap, and use Smeagol, Always Helps to kill off any of the larger Corsairs.
4. Protect conditions from Discovered with Gandalf, Wise Guide.

Since Corsairs only have a couple of really good combat-ready minions (Castamir of Umbar and Black Numenorean), once you eliminate their ability to recycle guys with your Throne, they don't have a whole lot of teeth.
