Immortal Alcarin vs. All exerting Weary
« on: February 19, 2009, 02:08:31 PM »
Let's say we have Alcarin in play and he is bearing Weary. What do you people thinks is the right timing if an  [Isengard] tracker bearing a fortification is assigned to him (his special ability is used)? Exert then heal or the opposite?

I think maybe both occurs at the same timing leting the freeps choose to exert than heal, but i'm really reluctant cause the special abilitis have paid it's cost and in the middle of effect the Weary triggers?

  Any help is apreciated.

the freepeople-player decides which triggers first.

so if alcarin (example) gots 2 wounds you as freepeople can say:

1. assign a minion bearing a fortification to him
2. take the exertion - nothing happens, because he is exhausted
2. heal one wound

that's it.

I think I disagree. Special abilities are always going first....So I think the healing aspect is going first

I think the exertion from Weary comes first.

- Pay the cost of Alcarin's ability: "Assign Alcarin to a minion..."
- Weary responds to the cost: "Each time the Free Peoples player assigns..."
- Perform effects of Alcarin's ability: "...to heal Alcarin."

Basically the thing about costs/effects, is not to treat the effects as a response to the costs (just like you wouldn't treat the archery phase as a response to the maneuver phase). Effects have to wait until all responses are performed, when the "game state" moves on.

I think Alcarin comes first. First you Assign to do someting, and THEN you have assigned him and Weary exerts.

I agree with GoG. You see, you assign-to-heal. Its all one continuous ability. You don't assign, leave the ability on hold and come back once Weary has done its thing. It just doesn't work like that. You assign him to heal him, then Weary kicks in. As far as I know, something like Weary can't interrupt an ability. ;)

Well, "Assign Alcarin to a minion bearing a [Gondor] fortification to heal Alcarin" follows the cost/effect format. So I'd treat Alcarin / Weary the same way as other examples with actions responding to costs.

If the Free Peoples player should get to decide the order, I'd write him like this:

"Each time the Free Peoples player assigns Alcarin to a minion bearing a [Gondor] fortification, heal Alcarin."

FP player assigns Alcarin to a relevant minion. Both Alcarin and Weary trigger. Both are required actions, so the FP player gets to decide the order.

ES is right, the weary kicks in before the healing, you have assigned to him in which case anything on him which says when he is assigned triggers then anything once that is all complete takes place such as his bonus for completing the assigning = healing.
