Comming up mb decks
« on: January 15, 2010, 12:41:57 PM »
I wanted to post this in Lothlorien, but somehow I don't have the option there to create a topic, so that's why I put it down here.

In the comming period I want to show you people some deckideas I had in the past. Starting with a deck I played in 2004 during a tournament. It didn't work that well, but that was more because of the shadow, which somehow didn't work. However the fellowship had no problems at all. I'll post the fellowship part:

Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Sam, Great Elf Warrior
Legolas, Greenleaf
Galadriel, Lady Redeemed
Smeagol, Slinker

4x Sting, Baggins Heirloom
4x The Shire Countryside
4x Elf-song
4x Double Shot
4x Don't Follow the Lights
4x Not Listening
Frodo's Cloak
2x Hobbit Sword
4x Don't Look at Them
Asfaloth, Elven Steed
2x Elven Sword
4x Brace of Coneys

The idea back then was actually based on my 3-companion burdenremoval/Smeagol deck. Using Smeagol and Stings gametext to win Smeagol skirmish and if needed it ditch a minion with don't follow the lights. But then the corsair came and I needed something in it which could ditch opponent's possesions. Galadriel LR was a gift from heaven. It also felt right, because in Rotk-movie there was a part in which Frodo had a vision from her. But I also needed some more protection and a reason for some more elven events which I could use for either Galadriel or use it's original purporse. Galadriel and Don't look at him were there also to cycle a bit faster. The shadow I runned this with was Easterlings with Gollum and Shelob. As said that part didn't worked that well, the shadow only came once on time and in the right order.

Nice idea, but maybe you should concentrate on just one idea, see, 4x Sting and the 2 Hibbit Swords are pretty useless. You'll cycle well with Don't look at them, but why cycle through the Deck when you could use some nice cards instead?

4x Elf-song
4x Double Shot
4x Don't Follow the Lights -2
4x Not Listening
Frodo's Cloak
2x Hobbit Sword -1
4x Don't Look at Them -1/-2
Asfaloth, Elven Steed
2x Elven Sword
4x Brace of Coneys

As said that part didn't worked that well, the shadow only came once on time and in the right order.

For my part, I would add some of the following cards:
Cirdan, TS
4x Elf-Song, 4x Double Shot, these are events you can use each turn, and Cirdan, TS is a monster with many events. As for that I'd add a couple of Life of the Eldar and run Cirdan also 3 or 4 times, as for healing and drawing: see, you just exert him 3 times to kill any minion you want and then discard him to draw 3 cards and to play another one during your next turn.
If you don't run Arwen, use the old Asfaloth which is actually the old asfaloth cus' he can and will give your companions +4 strength.
Maybe also some Shadow Between for healing and cycling.

Finally I'd run something like that:

Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Sam, Great Elf Warrior
Legolas, Greenleaf
Galadriel, Lady Redeemed
Smeagol, Slinker
4x Cirdan, TS

1x Sting, Baggins Heirloom
4x The Shire Countryside
4x Elf-song
4x Double Shot
2x Life of the Eldar
1x Shadow Between
2x Don't Follow the Lights
4x Not Listening
1x Hobbit Sword
2x Don't Look at Them
2x Elven Sword
4x Brace of Coneys

That's 39 cards, a little too much for me, but playable.

Greetz,

No, that was not the idea I had and have for it. It would give to much companions for this deck and would also generate to much twillight. This deck is build on Smeagol. Not on the elves. If you take out Sting 3x then you make smeagol useless.
Actually shadow between was in as was Glimpse of Fate. I'm afraid you didn't catch my intend with this deck. Maybe you catch it if I post the base-deck:

Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Sam, Great Elf Warrior
Smeagol, Slinker

4x Sting, Baggins Heirloom
4x The Shire Countryside
4x Don't Follow the Lights
4x Not Listening
2x Frodo's Cloak
2x Hobbit Sword
4x Don't Look at Them
4x Brace of Coneys
4x Impatient and Angry
1x A Talent for Not Being Seen
1x A Light in His Mind

Yeah, I know, winning skirmishes and pumping smeagol to win even more skirmishes and remove many, many, many, many, many burdens...and then heal with TSC.
But you know what?
Facing Swarm with deck means that you're actually dead, cus' Smeagol can take only 1 minion..
See where the problem is?
I don't like being fixed on just one strategy, cus' when it fails, you loose. It's always nice to have two plans that fit together well but also can work alone. So with the elves. You tried it with greenleaf, a typical Splash companion and some others. Cirdan actually is strong with all these Events, maybe Shadow between isn't so useful at all, but the others fit together perfectly:
Don't look at them+Cirdan is just sweet, isn't it? Discard some useless events, use cirdans ability and then heal, heal, heal..

I think you have too much cards to remove burdens compared to the number of exertion done so The Shire Countryside will not be used to his full potential. Your deck has way too many cards (44 I think?) and you won't be able to draw enough The Shire Countryside to be efficient. You should play at most 33 cards unless you pair it with Moria.

Winning skirmishes with Smeagol would be easier you removed Sam and Legolas to include Boromir, SoD and Merry, FtS. You can keep Galadriel as the 5th companion to discard conditions and possessions. You could also remove 2 Sting, 1 Hobbit Sword, 2 Brace of Coneys, Frodo's Cloak, 4 Double Shot, 3 or 4 Don't Look at them and Asfaloth.

that was the problem. It was intended to be with moria, but on the last moment I switched to gollum-easterlings. Actually I´m confinced I should have played nine fingered frodo.
Can´t remove Sam. Does not fit in the theme, neither does Merry or boromir. I only include him with old school hobbit.

Sorry allways think in themes.

By the way never had any problem with swarms with this deck. It takes to long for the opponent to build up.

44-44 can rotate fast also with ninja gollum and with sauron sitecontrol. Have a singleplayer sauron sitecontroldeck with 48-48 cards and it goed fast.
I like to heal in the skirmishphase so i will not take out the frodo´s cloack. I rather take out brace of coneys to put in nine fingered. Healing in the skirmish makes it able to pump smeagol up more then when I use merry for it.
Cirdan is a nice card, but I don´t like to play with it. I want to have all my comps out from the start. i don´t want to be depended if I get a comp fast enough. The fs has no intent to outrun or to win. The shadow should do this in this case.
Asfolath could go out as does the 2 elvenswords I think.

And yes I like it to be a bit dangerous. The less comps and the less protections, the nicer the game..

Well tomorrow I'll show a 3 comp deck (Frodo, sam, smeagol sligthly different then I showed today. This deck went actually great in local tournaments. I'll also show dauntless hunter my way.

Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Merry, Friend to Sam
Pippin, Hobbit of Some Intelligence
Legolas, Dauntless Hunter
Smeagol, Slinker

4x Sting, Baggins Heirloom
4x The Shire Countryside
4x Don't Follow the Lights
4x Not Listening
3x Frodo's Cloak
2x Hobbit Sword
1x Cliffs of Emyn Muil
4x Brace of Coneys
1x A Talent for Not Being Seen
1x Sam, Son of Hamfast
2x Elrond, Herald to Gil-galad
1x Vilya

This deck I used just after bohd came out. When everyone started to play Dauntless unter with Aragorn, SH I went into a deck with smeagol. Like the other 2 decks, I posted previously in this topic, Smeagol is the main character and the one supposed to fight the skirmishes. general idea again is to pump smeagol with adding burdens and using Sting. The burden removers are there to heal with Shire countryside.
The deck generally create almost no twillight so you'll get only a few minions against you. Win with smeagol. Ditch minion if nescessary. Legolas made sure that opponents build up with conditions was slowed down and that opponents deck chocked. Alternatively I used Path instead of Elrond, vilya and cliffs of emyn muil. I runned this deck actually also with Easterlings, but later I changed it into Isengard man (which was great; I won 2 tournaments with it).

Again just after Bohd. As you see the deck's share a simulair focus on Smeagol. There is just a slight piece of variation. I wanted to have the least as comps as possible and yet to have a strong and funny deck and just only tt-block. This was what nobody expected. In tournament it went 3-6 (so 3 wins out of six).  Actually I was quite suprised by it. Again it was runned together with Easterlings (in combo with Gollum) as shadow. In later versions I changed the shadow into Isengard Uruk-hai machines/Archery.

Tactics: Bid low and if possible not to go first. The shadow was meant to corrupt the opponent. Normally the shadowplayer played only 2 or 3 minions against me. Take a wound with Sam (or win it and remove a burden with I&A). Then Pump Smeagol win it's skirmish and discard if needed the minion on Frodo. Discard Smeagol in the regroup to remove burdens and play it following turn from the discard pile if possible with YMHU so I was able to heal. Other versions went outside tt-block and used for example Shire Country Side.

Frodo, Master of the Precious
The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Sam, Nice Sensible Hobbit
Smeagol, Slinker

4x Sting, Baggins Heirloom
4x Don't Follow the Lights
2x Frodo's Cloak
3x Hobbit Sword
2x Don't Look at Them
4x You Must Help Us
4x No Help for It
4x Impatient and Angry
1x Cliffs of Emyn Muil
4x Be Back Soon
1x Rare Good Ballast

After all, I would add a Canonfodder-companion to use the reamaining 2 Twilight in the starting fellowship, maybe Gimli, DotMR to spare some twilight, or somebody similar to that, just to not create too much twilight.

Couldn't you add PATHS as your swarm protection?  Should work well with your ample burden removal.

I like Mind Your Own Affairs as another way to help with swarms, though you would have to get a different Sam and Frodo for it to really be helpful.  Not sure any Frodo signet Sam would be useful though.  Maybe Sam, Resolute Hafling as another way to cycle your hand.

A Light in His Mind could pair well with Don't Look at Them.

I like Clever Hobbits as a counter to Gollum shadow, particularly wounding shadow with They Stole It and Promise Keeping.  It also could make use of extra copies of Don't Look at Them when you don't face Gollum shadow.

Could... but they are in a different deck. I just have only 4 paths. But if I would use them they would replace Be back soon.

I don't Like it. It would mean I need to expand the number of cards. Sam, RH would be the best Sam with Frodo-signet. The Sam I use is actually quite good and anti-swarm (just try to overwhelm him). You could say that I could replace them with Be back soon, but those I'd only replace them with Path. I need Be back soon either to remove a minion or to discard Smeagol. In this deck it's very important that Smeagol get's discarded. I also could use Never for this.

A Light in His Mind could pair well with Don't Look at Them.

Like it, but not needed, because I'm not playing scs. I Heal with you must help us.

This Smeagol is Anti-Gollum wounding. I assign Gollum against Smeagol and always have the first action: So I'll add a burden and then Smeagol can't get wounds; They stole it and Promise keeping becomes useless.

And how does she comes in play with just 9 twillight untill site 7? And if she comes in play then you assign Gollum to frodo; put on the ring and you don't get wounds either. Burdens yes, wounds no and so also no exertions from Promise keeping. Her Ladyship is good but not that good. Gollum and Shelob, her ladyship are hardly a problem and they would make me laugh. It would be a certain win: You don't do enough burdens with Gollum on Frodo bearing the ring and how do you want to overwhelm or kill Sam with Shelob (that's why this sam is in the deck;) )Besides that this deck will scrub your deck big time with it's twillight denial. Corsairs would be a problem though. Just try to play it. It's fun and not as bad as you think;)
