Re: The Hunt for Gollum - DC Set (A few sites)
« Reply #60 on: May 02, 2010, 02:35:07 PM »
Here is another one, this is a counter to Horn of Boromir in FOTR Block. The quote comes from Arithir talking about Gollum.

[2] Locked Doors [Gollum] Shadow
Condition • Support Area
Stealth.
While you can spot Gollum or Sméagol, allies cannot be assigned to skirmishes.
"Villagers lock their door tight against the dark."

I'm also thinking about making a card that would counter choke decks... something like 'While... the shadow number of each site cannot be reduced by Free Peoples cards'.

EDIT: I modified 'You Have my Heart'.

[1] •You Have my Heart [Elven]
Condition
Strength: +1
Vitality: +1
To play, spot Arwen. Bearer must be Aragorn.
Arwen cannot be overwhelmed unless her strength is tripled.
If Arwen is killed, discard this condition. If Aragorn is killed, place Arwen in the dead pile.

1 Bree Inn Entrance
Fellowship: Play Barliman Butterbur from your draw deck. Until the end of the turn, he participates in archery fire and skirmishes.
Why does he then fight? Not sure about the necessity.

[2] Lords of the Mountains [Dwarven]
Conditon • Support Area
Plays at a mountain or at an underground site.
Each Dwarf is strength +1.

[2] •Lords of the Mountains [Dwarven]
Conditon • Support Area
Each Dwarf is strength +1 and damage +1.
I don't love either version. How about "Each Dwarf is damage +1 (and strength +1 at a mountain or underground site." Then it becomes a mix between Lord of Moria and Mountain Homestead?

[1] Snare-Trap [Gondor]
Event • Maneuver
Search.
At sites 1 to 5, spot a ranger to prevent a character with strength 5 or less from being assigned to skirmishes until the regroup phase. At any other site, discard a minion with strength 5 or less.
I love the idea. I wonder if it should exert? Not sure. But it's really awesome!

(0) Strength of the Forefathers [Gondor]
Event • Skirmish
Make a [Gondor] companion strength +2 (or +4 while skirmishing a damage +1 minion).
"While skirmishing a minion with a damage bonus" might be more correct. Seems okay, if an unexciting version of Sentinels of Numenor. Do you want to perhaps leave this pump for a different culture?

[3] Orc Searcher [Sauron]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 8
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 6
When you play this minion, you may spot a [Sauron] search card to exert a companion.
Seems okay. But I might let him spot any search card, and perhaps let the Free Peoples player exert.

Rivendell Alley – a fetching for stealth cards? A move limit adder for discarding stealth cards?

[2] Locked Doors [Gollum] Shadow
Condition • Support Area
Stealth.
While you can spot Gollum or Sméagol, allies cannot be assigned to skirmishes.
"Villagers lock their door tight against the dark."
Again, a really awesome card! :gp:

I'm also thinking about making a card that would counter choke decks... something like 'While... the shadow number of each site cannot be reduced by Free Peoples cards'.
I wouldn't do anything so obvious. Just some kind of twilight adding would do the trick, or adding to the Shadow number.

Allowing Barliman Butterbur to skirmish was added only because of the home 1 and home 2 debate we had. I thought that it was a good idea to allow Barliman to skirmish at sites like Bree Streets, Bree Gate and even Breeland Forest.

For Lords of the Mountains, your version would make Lord of Moria worthless, unless it is unique. I think I prefer my first version over my second, but this one may need a bit of work.

For Snare-Trap, is a minion a character? I wasn't actually sure when I made that card. If the answer is yes, I'll make it 'exert a ranger'.

Thanx for the rewording for 'Strenght of...'. I wanted to make a pump à la Sentinels of Numenor that would be good vs Uruks. However, I'd like to give such a bonus to another culture... perhaps I could make an Elven cards à la Defiance that gives a bonus vs Uruks.

Good idea for Orc Searcher. I think that I'll keep him this way and use your idea to make another minion.

[2] Orc Follower [Sauron]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 7
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 6
When you play this minion, you may spot a search card to make the Free Peoples player exert a companion.

Yep, characters include minions, companions & allies.

Here are 3 new cards. The last one may be a little be to strong (but may be OK with a cost of 5) considering that this card was already made but I think that the overall concept is cool:

[4] •Úlairë Nertëa, Rider in Black [Wraith]
Minion • Nazgul
Strength: 9
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 3
When you play Úlairë Nertëa, you may spot X burden to take a X Shadow search card into hand from your discard pile.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[2] Isengard Mercenary [Isengard]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 6
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 4
Regroup: Discard a search card to make the Free Peoples player wound a companion.

[2] Stealthy Block [Wraith]
Condition • Support Area
Stealth.
Response: Discard this condition to cancel a skirmish event played in a skirmish involving a Nazgul.
Response: Discard this condition to cancel a skirmish special ability used in a skirmish involving a Nazgul.

[5] Seeking the Ring [Wraith]
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot 5 burdens and 5 [Wraith] search cards, the Ring-bearer is corrupted.
At the end of each of your Shadow phases, exert a Nazgul or discard this condition.

Discard this condition during the regroup phase.

[1] Lords of the Mountains [Dwarven]
Condition • Support Area
Each Dwarf with a damage bonus is strength +2.
Discard this condition during the regroup phase.

[1] Lords of the Forests [Elven]
Condition • Support Area
Each Elf archer is strength +2.
Discard this condition during the regroup phase.

[4] •Úlairë Nertëa, Rider in Black [Wraith]
Minion • Nazgul
Strength: 9
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 3
When you play Úlairë Nertëa, you may spot X burden to take a X Shadow search card into hand from your discard pile.
Presumably you mean: "... spot X burdens to take X Shadow search cards into hand from your discard pile."? I think I would prefer only 1 card, either "... spot 3 burdens to take a Shadow search card..." or "... spot X burdens to take a Shadow search card with twilight cost X or less..."

[2] Isengard Mercenary [Isengard]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 6
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 4
Regroup: Discard a search card to make the Free Peoples player wound a companion.
Presumably he shouldn't discard your opponent's search cards? "Discard your search card from play..." He seems okay, but I'm not sure why he's a mercenary!

"Response: If an event is played or a special ability is used during a skirmish involving a Nazgûl, discard this condition to cancel its effects." I wonder if it should be an event so that it has the element of surprise?

[5] Seeking the Ring [Wraith]
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot 5 burdens and 5 [Wraith] search cards, the Ring-bearer is corrupted.
At the end of each of your Shadow phases, exert a Nazgul or discard this condition.
This seems fun! Obviously I have no idea how many [Wraith] search cards there are, but it seems really fun anyway!

[1] Lords of Gondor [Gondor]
Condition • Support Area
Each [Gondor] Man with a defender bonus is strenght +2.
Discard this condition during the regroup phase.

[1] Lords of the Mountains [Dwarven]
Condition • Support Area
Each Dwarf with a damage bonus is strength +2.
Discard this condition during the regroup phase.

[1] Lords of the Forests [Elven]
Condition • Support Area
Each Elf archer is strength +2.
Discard this condition during the regroup phase.
I like the idea, but I'm not sure they all need the same bonus ("Each time an Elf archer wins a skirmish, you may draw a card", for example). And also it's a little jarring that a card with terrain keywords in the titles don't key off those keywords.

It's because that I wanted to have other minions than [Sauron] Orcs. The only way to have an [Isengard] Orc in the set was to give him the role of a mercenary who would also work with the [Sauron] Orcs.

[4] Orc Brute [Sauron]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 10
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 6
An opponent may not play skirmish events during skirmishes involving this minion.

[4] Orc Brawler [Sauron]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 10
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 6
An opponent may not use skirmish special abilities during skirmishes involving this minion.

There won't be many [Dwarven] cards in the set, I felt like this one could be nice for dwarves.

[1] Double-Kill [Gondor]
Event • Response
If a [Gondor] Man or a Dwarf kills a minion in a skirmish, wound another minion.

This one is an anti-choke card. A normal fellowship has more 4 or 5 companions and should give at least 10 twilight tokens at site 5-7-8-9. Perhaps I could add "except at sanctuaries" if you think that it is too powerful. I could also only make it add [2].

[2] •His Lurking Shadow [Gollum] Shadow
Condition • Support Area
To play, exert Gollum or a tracker.
At the start of your shadow phase, if the twilight pool has fewer than 10 twilight tokens, add [3].
Shadow: Discard this condition to play Gollum from your draw deck or discard pile.

[1] Silent Reflections [Gandalf]
Event • Maneuver
Spell.
Spot Gandalf to discard each stealth and search cards.

To fully appreciate this one, you must have seen the movie. After Aragorn kills Goblok, he is poisoned by a dart. It's a bit like a Blade Tip. If you think that it is too strong, I can make it cost [2].

[1] Poisonous Dart [Sauron]
Condition • Support Area
When you transfer this condition to a character, exhaust that character.
Response: If your [Sauron] Orc is killed during a skirmish, transfer this condition from your support area to the winning character.

(0) Lords of the Mountains [Dwarven]
Condition • Support Area
The Balrog's twilight cost is +1 for each Dwarf you can spot.
Discard this condition if you move to a site that is not a mountain or an underground site.

I guess that this one can be fun if you want to avoid the Balrog.

(0) Lords of the Forests [Elven]
Condition • Support Area
Each Elf archer is strength +2.
Discard this condition if you move to a site that is not a forest or a river.

Elves in FOTR Block need an intense strength bonus. Perhaps I should make these conditions unique.

Perhaps I should make these conditions unique.

I wouldn't make them unique.  They have the text of discarding them if you're not at a certain terrain, which seems to even them out well (let's face it, you can't do TOO much with the site path in FotR).  The way I see it, the cost associated with them evens them out, esp. since one would have to sacrifice up to 4 slots in their deck to fit them in.
Do not take dragons lightly.  They are heavier than you think.

I love the idea here, but I'm not sure you should include both in the same (small) set. I think I would make them both different scaled minions with the same ability, so one at [2]/[3] and one at [4].

I think it's fine. Anti choke is a great idea.

[1] Silent Reflections [Gandalf]
Event • Maneuver
Spell.
Spot Gandalf to discard each stealth and search cards.
"Discard each stealth and search card from play."

[1] Poisonous Dart [Sauron]
Condition • Support Area
When you transfer this condition to a character, exhaust that character.
Response: If your [Sauron] Orc is killed during a skirmish, transfer this condition from your support area to the winning character.
"... transfer this condition from your support area to a companion that minion was skirmishing." But I think it's fine - it depends on one of your guys dying.

I like the new [Elven] one but not the [Dwarven] one. I like the idea however, how about "While you can spot a Dwarf, each minion is twilight cost +1." It's still a very limited card in FotR block because of the limit of sites. But, if you want these cards to be used in expanded as well, then they DEFINITELY need to be unique.

Thanx for your comments Thranduil. I agree that it isn't necessary to have both of these orcs in the same small set, I think that I'll simply remove one of them.

Your rewording is always appreciated. :D

For the 'Lords' card, I actually liked my [Dwarven] card a lot, more than the [Elven] one. It isn't one of the most useful card... especially outside FOTR Block, but I think that it is pretty fun.

Random idea... a big FOTR block tracker.

[5] Morgul Scout Troop [Sauron]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 11
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 6
Tracker.
The roaming penalty for each [Sauron] minion you play is -1.
When you play this minion, you may wound a ranger.

Here is another site 3... à la Rivendell Terrace, Rivendell Valley and Frodo's Bedroom. There aren't much dwarven cards in the set... so they will benefit from it.

3 Rivendell Alley (0)
Sanctuary.
Fellowship: Play a Dwarf to draw a card.

This site can be very important if you want to play your site 7, a key site in FOTR Block. Also, Mirrormere is the place were the River Silverode starts so the gametext makes sense. I specified 'river' even if all the site 7 are rivers because of Uruviel.

6 Mirrormere [3]
River.
Fellowship: Exert a companion to play the fellowship's next site if it is a river (replacing the opponent's site if necessary).

Good idea, but I think I would have it exert instead of wound – coming to kill Aragorn out of nowhere is just a bit too annoying.

3 Rivendell Alley (0)

Fantastic and obvious!

6 Mirrormere [3]
River.
Fellowship: Exert a companion to play the fellowship's next site if it is a river (replacing the opponent's site if necessary).
Seems alright. Isn't Mirrormere in Moria though?
