Highlander on GCCG
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:46:17 AM »
I'm primarily a Magic: The Gathering player, and my favorite format by far is Elder Dragon Highlander (or MTG:Commander), and would be more than interested in trying out LotR Highlander. I'm currently collecting foils for a real life highlander deck, but I would really like to play it on GCCG too. So my question is: is anybody interested in playing highlander on GCCG?

EDIT: feel free to PM me if you want to try it on GCCG, and we will work out a time to play.

EDIT #2: Here is an example of how a highlander deck looks like in great lines:

Is highlander the one where you can have only 1 culture? Or the one where you can only have x1 of each card? Or maybe it's something else...?

You can have only one copy of each card.

Would be very interested in this format: how about the site path or the sets which are allowed? Is there an x-list? I guess it would be rather pointless aksing about an r-list...

Echoing what ununtrium said. I'd like to hear more about this.

No cards are X-listed, all cards are R-listed, and since I haven't found anything about the site path, I think that War of the Ring sitepath would be the most fitting (since basically it is just open, with further restrictions).  I don't know about any other restrictions, but depending on playgroups you can define a minimal decksize, for example in MTG's Elder Dragon Highlander, you have to play exactly 100 cards, and 200/250 cards in classical highlander.

For LotR it'd probably require a minimum of 50/50. However, since the game has a set amount of time (you basically move through the sites), it might prove to be too much cards. But it SHOULD work, due to cycling.

It would quite easy enough to code in a rule for it. If there's enough interest we should move this thread to the "House Rules" section. I certainly see no harm in trying it out.

Once again, taking MTG as basement, I would say that with the regular 30/30 minimal deck size, highlander games would be like MTG's Elder Dragon Highlander, which is a very skill intense, broken and still extremely enjoyable format, also it is rather a deck builder's dream format. With the 50/50 deck size requirement it would be like MTG's classic highlander, a slower, and not really broken format, that supports multiplayer games with 4+ players rather than duels (well EDH is usually multiplayer too, but it works just as fine in duels).  Both of them are very fun for me.

I think it would be fun to see what people could come up with. Normal minimum sounds fine. Also, I'd agree that most likely no X-list would be necessary. If you can pull off that wicked combo with only 1x of each card, more power to ya! ;)

I was able to build a rather consistent looking Steadfast Champion/ KotW - infi Erland 60 cards singleton deck, but yes, I prefer EDH in MTG, and I would prefer its equivalent in LotR too, so 30/30 looks fine to me :)

EDIT: the more I think about it, the more I think that some part of the horn loop may worth a ban, no matter which one though.

I've been thinking mostly of Movie Block, but that is a good point. Perhaps just be rather selective in removing a single card from each infiloop.

I feel like 90% of highlander decks in Movie Block would be simple swarm.
