We've held many DC contests over the years, but not much in the way of deck-building contests. We have some very talented players and deckbuilders here, so how about we have a challenge? I'll pick a card or group of cards, and you build a deck around them! Simple as that...except some of the cards will be ones that aren't used very much (if at all), so it really CAN be a challenge.

If you're interested, sign up! 8-)

Well with Thran and lem0n seemingly both interested, but BOTH gone for the next two weeks, I will wait until then to start this.

So there's still plenty of time to sign up. Now do so! ;D

I would love to try, given that I have enough time in two weeks or so. Are you going to stipulate a minimum number for each of the cards you choose?

Alrighty. With several folks back from trips, we'll finally start this soon.

I have added a participant list to the original post. If you're on there and don't want to be for any reason, just let me know and I'll take you off. If you're NOT on it and WANT to be, I can fix that too.

Not sure exactly when we'll start up. I'd like to give folks a few more days to sign up.... We'll definately start by Friday, how's that? Friday the 11th or perhaps even sooner. So sign up quick if you haven't yet!
Best regards,
Dáin

Alright, I think I've given everyone long enough to join. With the odd number of 11 contestants...let's get this party started! :hey:

For you first challenge, I want you to design a deck around the following rarely (if ever) used cards:

As with all decks in this contest, your deck must not just contain these cards, but actually USE them in a useful way.

Rules more specific to this round:

- You can use as many or as few copies in your deck as you wish (within LOTR TCG rules, of course), but you must include at least one copy of Merry IH and Pippin HoA in your deck. You may focus whatever strategy you decide to go with on just one or the other, or on both; that's up to you. But again, each must have at least one copy in your deck.
- Because these cards are both from the Tower block, your deck can be Tower Block format, Movie Block format, or Expanded format, but other formats (Fellowship, King, Standard) are obviously out. Please do NOT use Open, as I'd prefer to cut down on the possibilities of vastly overpowered or outright broken decks. Whichever format you choose, you may obviously include any other eligible cards in your deck, obeying the X-list, R-list, and other established rules for that format.
- For this round, a Shadow side and sitepath are purely optional. If they benefit your Free Peoples side in some way, then it's probably best to include them, even if you only include details on specific Shadow cards and/or sites as opposed to a full listing of cards. But the only requirement is a Free Peoples decklist, with as much or as little detail on the cards therein as you want to take the time to type up.

Though you can make your deck as bland as you wish, remember that this is a CONTEST, so the more detail and the more "flair" you include in your deck and descriptions, the better, more than likely, for your chances of winning that round.

We'll allow a full week for this first round, though if all submissions are in before then, we'll obviously start voting early, and if more time seems to be needed, we'll talk about extending the deadline. But for now, please PM your final deck to me by 12:00 midnight (EST), Friday, July 18th.

If you have not signed up and still want to join, you can still offically join in this thread...but all you really HAVE to do is send me a deck by the deadline. Doesn't matter if you're officially in or out: I'll accept any deck I recieve. Don't be shy! :ninja:

If you have any questions or concerns with the deck, deadline, or anything else, please don't hesitate to PM me or e-mail me at DainIronfoot47 AT hotmail DOT com. ;)

Good luck, and happy deckbuilding!
Best regards,
Dáin

I have a deck with both of these fellows in it already... do they have to have a central role in the deck? Or would that just be a better choice as far as judging is concerned?

Sorry I missed your question, boss. I wouldn't say they have to be THE central stars of the deck, but they should be used to contribute towards the deck's success. Just having them doing their thing on the side and not really helping out the rest of the fellowship isn't what I would consider really "using" them.

Remember everyone, deadline is Friday, and I have only one entry thus far. If you need more time, let me know ASAP!
Best regards,
Dáin

Probably won't be a problem, since the only people confirmed to even be in it still are you (Drake), Kralik, and Lurtzy. Still no word--yay or nay--from anyone else.

I under estimated the work required for this contest, i will have to concede as i dont seem to have much free time at home and even as slow as my work can be here sometimes i cant troll through a stack load of cards to formulate a deck when my boss might walk in at any time.

Sorry   :'(

If you think you COULD get it done with a little more time, then just let me know. We're already extended until Sunday, and if we need a little more time after that, that's fine...within reason, of course. Thran is still MIA, and there are a couple other contestants I haven't seen for days, either. Not like everyone else is breathing down my neck to wrap this round up any time soon. :P

Just let me know, man. I've already lost NB for the next month...I'd hate to lose ANOTHER member, but I understand if it's just not feasible. Believe me, I know what it means to be too busy to participate in forum activities as much as you'd like!

Alright, due to an error on my part, I'm giving Kralik a couple more days to get his entry in. He was waiting on some feedback from me and I simply missed it, so it would be unfair to do anything less than give him a little more time.

Monday, though, I roll with whatever entries I have.

I was putting a deck together, but I just don't have the time to make a deck worth submitting; all I've got is a half-random hodgepodge and no time to work on it and my bajillion other projects.

Seven entries in, and I think that's as good as we're going to get.

Points for each round will be cumulative, so those that have submitted an entry this round will obviously have a leg up on those that enter in the future. But anyone that wants to participate in future rounds is more than welcome! 8-)

Alright, on to the main event. I'll likely have to split these between multiple posts since the post size limitations will probably necessitate it. As per usual with my contests, I'll try and format these in a relatively consistant manner and take out any identifying text so that you can't tell who is who, hopefully making this a little more fair. We don't want voting simply on name recognition, after all! ;)

Now, without any further ado: our entries! Enjoy!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #1 - MR. Lurtzy
Tower Block Format

Free Peoples (38 cards):

Frodo, Courteous Halfling
The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Companions:
Gandalf, Mithrandir (starting)
Merry, Impatient Hobbit x3
Pippin, Hastiest of All x2
Aragorn, Heir of Elendil
Legolas, Dauntless hunter
Lorien Guardian x2

Possessions:
Glamdring, Lightning Brand
Ranger's Sword, Blade of Aragorn
Elven Bow x2
Legolas' Sword

Artifacts:
Ring of Barahir
Gandalf's Staff, Walking Stick

Events:
Fury of the White Rider x3
Valor x3
Defend It and Hope x2
Hard Choice x2
Under the Living Earth x2
War Must Be x2
Must Be a Dream x2
Task Was Not Done x3

Conditions:
Behold the White Rider x2

This deck is a Tower Block focused on multicultural wounding and big companions. It wounds minions early with Fury of the White Rider and Defend It and Hope. Legolas and the Lorien Guardians wound the minions again with archery fire and should get rid of most opposition by the skirmish phase. If there are still minions left by the regroup phase, wound with Lorien Guardian or Pippin and play a Task Was Not Done to discard them all. Gandalf gets pretty big during skirmishes with Glamdring and Under the Living Earth (this deck gives away lots of twilight). Aragorn can take on two minions if he has to, and Legolas with his sword and Valor can take on most minions. Either Merry or Hard Choice can heal Gandalf after you move. Must Be a Dream is there to heal the Elves and Aragorn if the need arises. Even Frodo can fight if he has to, and can take some archery wounds for the other companions. However, from all the wounding, there shouldn't be many minions left at all so keeping the hobbits alive until the regroup is pretty easy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #2 - Elessar's Socks
Expanded Format

Free Peoples (32 cards):

Frodo, Resolute Hobbit w/ The One Ring, The Great Ring

Merry, Impatient Hobbit (starting)
Pippin, Hastiest of All (starting)
Eowyn, Lady of Ithilien (starting)
Gandalf, Powerful Guide x4

Barliman Butterbur, Prancing Pony Proprietor

Brego
Radagast's Herb Bag
Spear of the Mark

Birthday Present
Home and Hearth x4

A Wizard Is Never Late x2
Knocked on the Head x4
Roll of Thunder x3
Strength of Spirit x4
Terrible and Evil x3

Bid to go first and pull Brego with Stables. Once Powerful Guide comes down, Merry and Pippin can be discarded to cut down on twilight until their service is needed.

Wounds are generated with the Gandalf/Eowyn tag team. Each time a spell is played, you can add a burden to wound a minion with Powerful Guide, and then exert Gandalf to wound a minion again with Radagast's Herb Bag. Strength of Spirit is a must-have spell with Eowny's special ability, and it also combos with the wounding spell Terrible and Evil. If you want to be gutsy Roll of Thunder can be switched to the spell Turn of the Tide, but I went with the guaranteed possession removal here.

The use of Powerful Guide and his support cards tends to generate burdens and exert him. This is where the Hobbits come in. While both the versions here and their bouncing counterparts can take advantage of Home and Hearth to remove burdens each time they're played, Impatient Hobbit and Hastiest of All go the extra step of being able to play repeatedly in one turn thanks to Knocked on the Head. With Merry that also means healing Gandalf each time, and with (hopefully the rarely used) Pippin that means more wounds to finish off a straggler.

Birthday Present retrieves KotH. Once several copies of Home and Hearth are in play, the burdens added are more than made up in the regroup phase.

ENTRY #3 - Thranduil
Expanded Format

Free Peoples (32 cards):

Frodo, Weary From the Journey
The One Ring, The Great Ring

Starting Fellowship
Gandalf, Leader of Men
Merry, Impatient Hobbit
Pippin, Hastiest of All

Companions
Gandalf, Mithrandir
Farmer Maggot, Hobbit of the Marish
Rosie Cotton, Barmaid
Fredegar Bolger, Fatty
Quickbeam, Bregalad
Forest Guardian
Radagast, the Brown

Followers
Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor x2

Possessions
Glamdring, Orc Beater
Sting, Elven Long Knife
Shadowfax, Greatheart

Conditions
Sent Back

Events
Saved From the Fire x4
Mighty Steed x3
Narrow Escape x2
Knocked on the Head x4
Task Was Not Done x3

Summary of the strategy:
Basically, with your first SftF you burn Gandalf to get Mithrandir, Sent Back and Orc-Beater. Every time you get a Hobbit companion, you burn them to get the support cards you need or discard them to prevent Mithrandir or your Hobbits dying. The Ents get burnt as soon as you play them for [Gandalf] support cards.

In the regroup phase, you can discard Merry to heal Mithrandir if he's in trouble. Then you can use Narrow Escape to discard minions. Then you can discard Pippin to make your opponent wound minions. Then you play Knocked On the Head, rinse and repeat (recurring KotH using Daddy Twofoot). Then you play Task Was Not Done to discard those minions your opponent just wounded!

At some point you get Radagast and play him so that, with your formidable regroup discarding and a deadly Gandalf who can fight multiple times using Mighty Steed and can be even stronger using Greatheart (while later removing the threats with Elven Long Knife), you can triple to win. If you're worried about the ludicrous amount of twilight you're adding, just discard Merry and Pippin in the regroup phase and only play them again in a future turn.

Worried Frodo is going to die? With Sting and the Great Ring you should be alright.

Don't like all those companions going into your dead pile, play a Shadow side which replaces your sites like with Led Astray so that in region 2 you can keep moving to the Falls of Rauros!

Admittedly, not a very serious deck, but that Merry and Pippin don't seem to me very serious! :D

Sites
[3] The Prancing Pony

Saved from the Fire burns Gandalf, grabs Gandalf, Sent Back and Treebeard. Boromir is an obvious Prancing Pony pull, hobbits get strong, are discarded every regroup, so they have free healing. They are stacked on Treebeard, so he can play them back. This way they take a maximum benefit of Everyone knows, and thus they get strong. G for grand is anonther strenght adder, so make sure those burdens, when they come go away. Merry heals Gandalf in the regroup, pippin wounds another for task was not done. But maybe there aren't minions left for they can be discarded with Boromirs ability....

ENTRY #5 - NappyKorn
Expanded Format

Free Peoples (35 cards):

Frodo And Ring
The One Ring, Such a Weight to Carry
Frodo, Master of the Precious

Fellowship
Merry, Impatient Hobbit (starting)
Pippin, Hastiest of All (starting)
Sam, Nice Sensible Hobbit (starting)
Smeagol, Poor Creature (starting)
Gandalf, Greyhame x3
Safe Passage x2
A Promise x4
Home and Hearth x3
Shadowplay x3
Be Back Soon x3
Make Haste x3
One Good Turn Deserves Another x3
Unheeded x3
Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor x2
Sting, Baggins Heirloom
Hobbit Sword

Ok bid 0 to go first, play Dammed Gate-stream to grab either Safe Passage or One Good Turn Deserves Another Depending on what you don't draw in your starting hand. get your A Promises out and the Hobbit Sword and Sting to Make Frodo and Sam your main fighters. Basic idea of the deck is to choke the pool with Safe Passage and play Make Haste (regrabbing it with Daddy Twofoot) to discard minions and to play Be Back Soon (regrabbed with Incited) to discard Smeagol to discard more minions all done during the maneuver phase. You use Merry and Pip as well for Shadow Play/unheeded combo to ensure they can't exert to prevent Be Back Soon. If that Fails play Unheeded when the exert to prevent to get the same effect. What ever else gets through Sam and Frodo (maybe Gandy) face. If Gandy dies you can always play Pinnacles and exert 3 comps (Merry, Pippin, and Smeagol since they will discard to heal) to play Gandalf back from your discard pile . One Good Turn Deserves Another helps make sure you move to Mountains for Safe Passage to work and it will help your shadow as well with Slippery as Fishes. Home and Hearth should control the burdens you add replaying Smeagol over and over again with Frodo's text.

Shadow (35 cards):

Gollum, Dark as Darkness x2
Gollum, Mad Thing
Incited
Plotting x2
Promise Keeping x2
Deceit x3
Not Easily Avoided x2
Slippery as Fishes x4
They Stole It x2
Captured by the Ring x4
Horribly Strong x3
Master Broke His Promise x2
Sweeter Meats x3
Unseen Foe x2
You're a Liar and a Thief x2

The main goal of the deck is to get Gollum on a comp wound them to death with They Stole It. Promise Keeping helps kill the skirmishing comp and can spread the other exertion around for the other wounding cards in the deck for easy kills . DaD can remove spare burdens to add twilght and with Sweeter Meats you can prevent wounds to Gollum so you can use Master Broke his Promise. With all the skrimish phase wounding Promise Keeping can get a few exertions on other comps so when regroups rolls around Master Broke His Promise and Unseen Foe can do its killing. Horribly Strong can add some extra wounds and they use Captured By the Ring to replay Gollum skirmish wound to kill then regroup kill some more. Incited is here to get some wounding cards back if you don't pull draw into any and it helps get Be Back Soon ready to replay for your fellowship. Slippery as Fishes can help pump Gollum since your freeps will control the path and with him getting larger that mean less discarding to wound and more Promise Keeping on unassigned comps for the regroup kills. Deceit keeps those conditions safe and Not Easily Avoided helps to setup a bit. I would have run Not This Time but needing to exert Gollum 3 times in the regroup phase for the killer Master Broke His Promise would become void if exerting to kill in the skrimish phase.

Sites:

[1] Slopes of Orodruin
[2] Mere of Dead Faces
[2] Redhorn Pass
[3] Mount Doom
[3] Dammed Gate-stream
[3] Pinnacle of Zirakzigil

Sites are mainly mountains that helps with Slippery As Fishes and Safe Passage and the others help get your freeps started (Dammend Gate-Stream) and helps control the path if you don't have a One Good Turn Deserves Another (Mere of Dead Faces).

Anyway there you have it Freeps, Shadow, site path and strategies for both.

ENTRY #6 - Dáin Ironfoot
Expanded Format

Free Peoples (35 cards):

Frodo, Hope of Free Peoples w/ The One Ring, The Ring of Doom

Gandalf, Leader of Men (starting)
Merry, Impatient Hobbit (starting)
Pippin, Hastiest of All (starting)
Aragorn, Thorongil (Prancing Pony pull)
Huorn

Treebeard, Earthborn x2
Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor

Sting, Elven Long Knife
Glamdring, Foe-hammer
Shadowfax, Greatheart
Anduril, Sword That Was Broken
Aragorn's Bow, Ranger's Longbow
Ring of Barahir

Not the First Halfling x2
Song of the Shire x2
Home and Hearth
Hearts Raised
Ithilien Trap x2

Knocked On the Head x4
Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom x3
Have Patience x2
Hard Choice x2
At His Command x2

Nice and simple at its core. Aragorn exerts and wounds like crazy with his text and his longbow, then the threats added to do so are peeled with NfFatRoD and Elven Long Knife. Potentially even more pre-skirmish wounding is piled on thanks to Ithilien Trap, and then Pippin can wound anything that manages to live through all that AND skirmishing...preferrably with some Knocked On the Head to pull him back and repeat a couple times that same turn. Worst case, he can go on Treebeard to pull back next turn.

This deck isn't all about pre-skirmish (and post-skirmish) wounding, though; it can dish it out during skirmishes, too. Aragorn can turn all those threats added into a serious strength boost for Gandalf or, in a pinch, Merry or Pippin using At His Command. Not the First Halfling requires some exertions to get going, but can chip in for any companion but Frodo, and Song of the Shire can help keep them from getting overwhelmed (especially the weak Hobbits if they end up having to fight). But even without such pumps, Aragorn has as much as 12 strength, Gandalf has 9 (and can potentially get more with Shadowfax + more threats), and your Huorn can mop up any smaller minions with 7 strength (thanks to spotting Treebeard) and a damage bonus.

Healing needs to be pretty extensive thanks to all the exerting we're doing for our aforementioned pumps...not so much for the Hobbits, who can peel their own wounds when they discard themselves and re-enter play, but for Aragorn (At His Command), Gandalf (Not the First Halfling and Song of the Shire), and Frodo (Elven Long Knife). This healing is achieved through events (Hard Choice for Frodo, Gandalf, and the other Hobbits if they need it and Have Patience for anyone) and the Ring of Barahir (which should be able to heal any companion as well thanks to the tokens on NtFH, SotS, and Ithilien Trap). Merry IH is another healing alternative for Gandalf or your Huorn, though it's probably best to save KotH for Pippin's multi-wounding potential. Treebeard is a good place to put Merry, though. Speaking of whom, Treebeard can also be exerted to prevent wounds to the Huorn thanks to the Tree's response ability, making him a perfect candidate to absorb any wounds an opponent DOES try to throw at you.

The only other card worth mentioning is Daddy Twofoot, who can pull back Knocked On the Head or NfFatRoD as needed, afterwhich Glamdring and Home and Hearth peel the burdens added by Daddy. In practice, I might end up using a different Glamdring (like Elven Blade) for more sheer damage, since I imagine Home and Hearth could easily handle any burdens added this way, but only a game or two would REALLY answer that question.

Not a perfect deck by any means, but a fun one I'd be interested in trying out some time. Could be a lot of fun, methinks.

Description:
Gandalf likes to play with fire. He is, after all, the Servant of the Secret Fire and can make some mean Fireworks. However, sometimes his magic displays get out of hand, and he has some... accidents. :o This FP deck revolves around burning your own companions to death. Can you hear Smeagol say, "It burns us, it burns us, precioussss!"?

Shadow is Gollum at his best, adding burdens to both corrupt the Ring-bearer and hurt the fellowship with the big wigs.

FP strategy rundown:
This deck has some good tricks up its sleeve based on losing initiative. As soon as you have a change with Saved From the Fire, burn Gandalf and nab Sent Back, Gandalf MoW, and BoT. BoT will trash your opponents' conditions with MoW's skirmish abilities. If you are fighting Shadow cultures that can grant themselves initiative regardless of your hand, that's OK... at the point that they add enough tokens to have permanent initiative, your loss of initiative will trash their condition. Catch-22 for them. 8-)

Barliman Butterbur, PPP is an awesome twilight (0) way to grab back either SotSF or SftF, your call. Once you get more SftF's, burn (in general order of preference):

Smeagol - To get Heavy Burden, Hidden Even from Her, and Fat One Wants It (Final Strike if you already have any of the above)
Merry or Pippin - To get Sting, BotEL, A Light in His Mind, and The Shire Countryside's
A Huorn - Optional, to get whatever [Gandalf] cards you need (Treebeard, if you don't have him yet, or Gandy's toys)

Once you have the [Shire] cards out, you can start healing and removing burdens like mad. Take advantage of Such a Weight to Carry to add a burden or two to remove if necessary. If facing a corruption deck, you might favor burning Merry or Pippin before Smeagol. Smeagol's burdening ability isn't bad.

Which hobbit to burn? They are both useful in their own ways. Once you have Treebeard out (a must), you can use one or the other every turn. I tend to favor Merry for his healing abilities, but Pippin could be useful against the likes of [Isengard] Orcs... Take a few wounds and then use his regroup action to kill an orc and stack. They are both good at soaking up archery as well.

If your opponent manages to kill Gandalf, or you need to heal/discard a condition before skirmishing, you easily can lose initiative with Lindenroot. He can also help you cycle. The hobbits allow him to fight, and his Skirmish ability is not bad either.

Huorns get to be Str 8 and dmg +1 due to Lindenroot and Treebeard. Not bad... :)

Shadow rundown:
The Gollum burdening strategy is classic, greatly aided by burning Smeagol. The tricky part is getting Gollum to win a few skirmishes first and get strong enough. Here are a few thoughts:

Sauron - Gollum adds lots of threats and burdens. Two of the Lord of the Rings means that you will probably get at least one during the game. Wait until the right time and play him for cheap with Ithil Stone.
Ulaire Nelya, Ringwraith in Twilight - Nice minion for the price, helps you play Ithil Stone as well.
Shotgun Enquea - Awesome! You know what to do.
Shelob, Her Ladyship - Keeps the strongest companions from fighting Gollum.
Hobbitses are Dead - works on all minions, and don't forget to play it out of your discard pile as much as possible! Note that you will be shuffling your deck often with SftF, so it will end up back in there after going to the bottom.
Master Broke His Promise - an excellent parting blow after Enquea exhausts the fellowship.

How do we give points? Do we rate every deck? Just make a personal top 3?

Whoops...sorry, sorry. Got a little rushed there at the end.

Vote for your Top 3, in order (#1 first, #2 second, #3 third). You can give comments if you like, but all you HAVE to do is listed your favorite three.

Each first place vote will net that deck's author 3 points, every second nets 2 points, and every third gets them 1 point. At the end of the round's voting, the person with the most total points will be the winner. ALL points will carry over to the next round, though, so the final champion may not win many (or even ANY, potentially) of the rounds throughout the contest.

Hope that clears things up. Let me know if there are more questions.
Best regards,
Dáin

Sorry for the delay, guys, both with the contest and my own votes, which go:

5
2
7

That means that the winner is...uh, a tie. Here's the breakdown:

Entry #5 - NappyKorn - 15
Entry #2 - Elessar's Socks - 15
Entry #6 - Dáin Ironfoot - 7
Entry #7 - Kralik - 5
Entry #1 - Mr. Lurtzy - 4
Entry #3 - Thranduil - 4
Entry #4 - Gil-Estel - 4

Since the winner of individual rounds isn't the end all and be all of this contest--remember, only the person with the most cumulative points at the end is our winner--we'll let it slide this time rather than waiting on more votes or having some kind of design-off. :P So, NappyKorn and Elessar's Socks: congratulations to you both! You each get a nice shiny :gp: from me.

Okay, though cumulative points count, and thus our winners get a head start, if you're farther back in the pack, don't despair! There's still plenty of time to catch up, as we have several rounds to go. And if you're not in the contest yet and want to join, there's still plenty of time for YOU to catch up as well! Come one, come all!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For now, though, time for Round 2.

For this challenge, I want you to design a deck around the following card:

As with all decks in this contest, your deck must not just contain this card, but actually USE it in a useful way.

Rules more specific to this round:

- You can use as many or as few copies in your deck as you wish (within LOTR TCG rules, of course), but you must include at least one copy of Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk in your deck.
- Because this card is from the Fellowship block, your deck can be Fellowship Block format, the mostly abandoned (but still valid, in my mind) Fellowship-Tower Block format (Fellowship and Tower cards only, with Tower Block sites), Movie Block format (Fellowship, Tower, and King Blocks with King sites), or Expanded format, but other formats (Tower, King, Standard) are obviously out. Please do NOT use Open, as I'd prefer to cut down on the possibilities of vastly overpowered or outright broken decks. Whichever format you choose, you may obviously include any other eligible cards in your deck, obeying the X-list, R-list, and other established rules for that format.
- As with last round, a Shadow side and sitepath are still purely optional.

For this round, that means it's probably best to try and get the most out of Gandalf's text; including him with just, say, a Hobbit and a Man probably won't win you many brownie points.

We'll allow a little over a week for this round, though if all submissions are in before then, we'll obviously start voting early, and if more time seems to be needed, we'll talk about extending the deadline. But for now, please PM your final deck to me by Friday, August 15th.

Best regards,
Dáin

Two decks in now, but time is running out! If you're still in, folks, let me know if you can make the deadline, and if you can't, we'll discuss potential extensions.

Take your time, ES. Looks like I'm going to be busier this weekend than I anticipated, so everyone can take until Monday.

But please please PLEASE let me know if you're still working so I know how many decks to expect.

Thanks, all!

Well, my car died this weekend :(, so I'll be staying at home tomorrow talking to the bank about loans and searching for cars. Not likely to get to posting the contest results until Tuesday, so you've got until THEN to get those entries in, please.

Thanks, and sorry for yet another delay. :-S

. . .

It's Tuesday, four days after the original deadline, and including my own submission, I have...four.

That's it. That's it??

Come on, guys. People have been asking for contest like this for a year, and now we're on only the second round, and I get only three other entries? You guys can do better than that.

If you're not interested in the contest anymore, let me know and I can just scrap it. But if you ARE interested, let me know when (or if) you plan on submitting a deck for this round so I can get things going for the folks that were thoughtful enough to pay attention to the deadline.
Best regards,
Dáin

Well due to sheer busyness on my part, ya'll ended up getting yet ANOTHER bonus day, but still nothing new. So I'm going to post what I have.

Thanks to those that got their entries in for this round. I appreciate the effort you put into these decks...and I may have to playtest a couple of them and see how they do.

Here we go....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #1 - Gandalf's Weed
Fellowship Block Format

SITES:
[1]  Shire Lookout Point

This site is important enough to warrant bidding [2] or even [3] to go first. You NEED Gandalf's Cart first thing to prevent your hand from clogging. And all the better if you keep your opponent from playing The Prancing Pony! Two burdens isn't too risky since you should be able to remove them fairly easily with Narya and Gandalf's Pipe.

FREE PEOPLES (40 cards):

Frodo, Old Bilbo's Heir w/ The Ruling Ring OR Isildur's Bane

Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk (starting)
Gimli, Son of Gloin x2
Legolas, Prince Of Mirkwood x2
Aragorn, Ranger of the North x3

Elrond, Lord Of Rivendell x2
Bilbo, Retired Adventurer x3

Narya
Gandalf's Staff x2
Gandalf's Cart
Glamdring
Gimli's Battle Axe
Long-knives of Legolas
Bow of the Galadhrim
Ranger's Sword
Aragorn's Bow

Longbottom Leaf x2
Old Toby x4
Aragorn's Pipe x2
Frodo's Pipe x2
Gandalf's Pipe x2
Gimli's Pipe
The Gaffer's Pipe

Trust Me as You Once Did x3

Gandalf FoTS is the centerpiece of this pipeweed deck! With a base strength of 7, he should grow to 10 quickly, and with his possessions, he's a whopping 12 strength and 6 vitality. Let's look at some of this deck's strengths:

Pipeweed: With five possible pipes, you can do just about anything: Remove burdens, heal companions, remove twilight... once the engine gets going, you are in very good shape. Bilbo, Retired Adventurer lets you retrieve your pipeweed from discard with ease. With Frodo and Elrond, you should be able to shuffle in two per turn. Get back those Old Toby's!

Cycling: Every single one of your Freeps cards can be played immediately. Your possessions go on Gandalf's Cart if you either don't have the appropriate companion or want to save on twilight. Old Toby lets you draw a card when you play it, and Longbottom Leaf lets you discard if you need to get out of a clog. Elrond serves the dual purpose as a healer for Bilbo and a card drawing machine.

Signets: Notice anything about your fellowship? That's right, they all have the Gandalf signet! Well, all except for Gandalf. This is intentional and it works in your favor in two ways: 1) Trust Me as You Once Did is a great strength pump for your companions, and Gandalf's got vitality to spare. You needn't fear a swarm on Frodo (plus you've got Aragorn). 2) Since Gandalf has the Frodo signet, you can heal him 3-5 times at once with Frodo's Pipe and leave him ready to exert another day!

Rainbow: Rainbow fellowships were some of the most powerful setups and they thrive in the Fellowship block with less cards that target abuse. It's well balanced and has counters to every minion strategy. All of your companions in this deck have great pumps and yet we stay out of Shotgun Enquea's reach.

SHADOW (40 cards):
Pair this deck with a Shadow that cycles well. If you have an good Moria setup it's possible to go to up to 45 cards (!). In that case, I'd recommend throwing in 2x Gandalf's Wisdom to help choke, 1x Flaming Brand, and another 1x each of Legolas and Gimli. Secret Sentinels couldn't hurt either.

Other thoughts:
Watch out for Isengard Smith! :P

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #2
Expanded Format

FREE PEOPLES (31 cards):

Frodo, Son of Drogo w/ The One Ring, The Great Ring

Gimli, Eager Hunter (starting)
Legolas, Of the Woodland Realm (starting)
Aragorn, Thorongil (pull with The Prancing Pony)
Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk x3

Anduril, Flame of the West
Armor of Khazad
Hand Axe
Heavy Axe x2
Ring of Fury
Shadowfax, Greatest of the Mearas
Sting, Elven Long Knife

Forth the Three Hunters! x3
My Axe Is Notched
Namarie x2
Run Until Found x3
Spirit of the White Tree
Stout and Strong

Dwarven Stratagem x3
Roll of Thunder x3

This is a combo-intensive deck, so make sure the Shadow can cycle well. It's essentially hunters beatdown with Friend of the Shirefolk as support.

Gimli is the main skirmisher with 14 strength when fully geared, but he really shines when the  token conditions power up Heavy Axe. My Axe Is Notched and Stout and Strong both add tokens each time he wins a skirmish. Run Until Found can be reinforced immediately and helps tide over the strength boosts until Heavy Axe is played. Dwarven Stratagem reinforces a  token for each hunter you can spot (3 in this deck).

Forth the Three Hunters! makes a minion strength -3 for each exertion from Aragorn, which further supports Gimli and allows Aragorn (12 strength geared) and Gandalf (11 strength geared) to hold their own.

Armor of Khazad and Spirit of the White Tree protect Gimli and Aragorn from skirmish-based wounding. SotWT also helps Aragorn win skirmishes by restricting minion pumps.

Namarie provides targeted condition removal, Roll of Thunder provides possession/artifact removal, Greatest of the Mearas provides burden removal, and Elven Long Knife provides threat removal. Since FotS has the Frodo signet, he can also exert to heal Son of Drogo, getting more use out of ELK to support Armor of Khazad and GotM.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #3
Expanded Format

FREE PEOPLES (38 cards):

Gimili, Bearer of Grudges w/ The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Glorfindal, Revealed in Wraith (starting)
Aragorn, Strider (starting)
Merry, Loyal Companion (starting)
Gandalf, Friend of The Shirefolk x4

Alatar, Final Envoy
Pallando, Far Traveling One

Glamdring, Lightning Brand x2
Ranger's Sword x2
Elven Armaments x2
Merry's Sword x2
Axe of Erebor
Ring of Fury
Flaming Brand
Wizards Staff x2
Shadowfax, Roaring Wind x2
Merry's Armor
Horn of The Mark
Rangers Cloak
Speak Friend and Enter x2
Not the First Halfling x2
A Path Appointed x2
Wish for our Kinfolk x2
Strange Meeting x3

SITES:

Shores of Nen Hithoel
Isenwash
Fangorn Glade
Old Forest Road
Crossroads of the Fallen Kings
East Road
Caras Galadhon
Anduin River
Wold Battlefield

Bid high to go first. Hope you get Gandalf first hand. Give him his stuff to make him a monster. Alatar and Shadowfax are for reinforcing tokens on Not the First Halfling. Pallando is for condition discarding. A Path Appointed and Speak Friend and Enter are for when you move on. After Gimili gets his stuff he can fight and has more resistance. Glorfindal can take care of archery decks with Elven Armaments. Merry can fight too, but Gandalf is there for large minions and Strange Meeting is for cycling. =D>
Best regards,
Dáin

ENTRY #4
Fellowship Block Format

FREE PEOPLES (38 cards):

Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer w/ The One Ring, Isildur's Bane

Gimli, Son of Gloin (starting)
Legolas, Greenleaf (starting)
Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk
Aragorn, Heir to the White City
Merry, From O'er the Brandywine

Hobbit Sword
Sting
Glamdring
Aragorn's Bow
Ranger's Sword
Dwarven Axe
Hand Axe

Power According To His Stature x3
Sorry About Everything x2
Mysterious Wizard x2
Servant of the Secret Fire x3
Strength of Spirit x2
Dagger Strike x2
A Ranger's Versatility x2
Swordarm of the White Tower  x2
Axe Strike x2
Double Shot x2

The Shire Countryside x2
Gondor Bowmen x2

This deck centers around getting Gandalf pretty big. With all of the races being spotted and bearing Glamdring, he is strength 12, not to mention the events that help him (Mysterious Wizard, Servant of the Secret Fire). The other companions are strong as well and can fight if they have to. A Ranger's Versatility can exhaust a troublesome minion, and with the base archery being usually about 4-6, most minions won't get through to trouble the fellowship. Power According To His Stature also helps to get rid of big minions and then Sorry About Everything can get rid of the burdens. The overall powerful companions can take care of anything else that gets through. This deck is really powerful all around and most Shadow strategies will have trouble beating it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #5 - Smoking Frodo-folk
Fellowship Block Format

FREE PEOPLES (39 cards):

Frodo, Old Bilbo's Heir w/ The One Ring, Isildur's Bane

Gimli, Dwarf of the Mountain-race (starting)
Legolas, Greenleaf (starting)
Aragorn, Heir To The White City (pull with The Prancing Pony)
Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk x4

Bilbo, Retired Adventurer x2

Frodo's Pipe x3
Gimli's Pipe
Aragorn's Pipe x2
Gandalf's Pipe
The Gaffer's Pipe
Sting
Gimli's Battle Axe
Long-knives of Legolas
Ranger's Sword
Aragorn's Bow
Armor
Glamdring

Old Toby x4
Longbottom Leaf x3

Servant of the Secret Fire x3
Fireworks x2
Durin's Secret
Speak Friend and Enter
Orc-bane

Notice that all the companions (except Frodo himself) have the Frodo signet. We use and abuse this fact with our pipeweed; Frodo's Pipe can heal anyone here besides Frodo himself, and with as many as five pipes around (or potentially even MORE using the ability of Gimli's Pipe), that means you can heal up any one of these companions from exhaustion to fully healthy with a single pipeweed. That turns Greenleaf and a bow-equipped Aragorn into archery monsters, enabling you to use their wounding to the fullest and then heal them up completely later. Aragorn's Pipe can spread the healing around if you're taking more widespread wounds...and again, with all your pipes out, he can heal your entire fellowship this way with a single pipeweed. Not bad, not bad. Gandalf's Pipe lets you remove mass burdens, The Gaffer's Pipe lets you remove lots of twilight (and chokes very effectively when paired with Aragorn HttWC), and Gimli's Pipe generates extra pipe spotting when/if needed...and remember, you can then heal Gimli up with Frodo's Pipe (this time without having to wait until a later phase), so the exerting required by Gimli's Pipe is virtually meaningless.

The companions also get their normal toys to play with, and fully loaded, there base strengths come in at 5 for Frodo, 8 for Gimli, 7 for Legolas, 10 (and tough to overwhelm with Armor) for Aragorn, and whopping 12 for Gandalf. You might not win all your skirmishes, but with the healing you'll have at your disposal, you don't have to...you just have to survive until the next fellowship phase. ;) And the strengths here should be high enough to pull that off consistently. If you DO end up in a bind, though, Servant of the Secret Fire can be a lifesaver.

Orc-bane can lay down extra pre-skirmish wounding if Aragorn and Legolas aren't enough...and again, the exerting is easily remedied later. Speak Friend and Enter is a nice bonus, and Durin's Secret can be a nasty surprise for your opponent if sprung once your pipeweed support system is fully in place. Fireworks and Bilbo pull back your pipeweeds and/or [Gandalf] cards you want back from discard.

Let's see...massive deck...Fellowship block...wonder what my Shadow side could be?

SHADOW (39 cards):

The Balrog, Flame of Udun
Cave Troll of Moria, Scourge of the Black Pit
Ancient Chieftain
Ulaire Nertea, Messenger of Dol Guldur
Goblin Runner x4
Goblin Scavengers x3
Goblin Scrabbler x3
Goblin Wallcrawler x3
Moria Scout x3
Goblin Warrior

Goblin Scimitar x4
Moria Axe

Goblin Armory x4
Goblin Swarms x3
Relics of Moria
Goblin Domain

Host of Thousands x4

Nothing too out of the ordinary here. Draw and create twilight like mad with the scimitars (and Scavengers to get them back) and armories, swarm with your goblins, tackle big companions with your heavy hitters like The Balrog and the Cave Troll. Rinse and repeat as necessary each turn to wear your opponent down and simply overwhelm them.

So that just leaves....

SITES:

[1] The Prancing Pony
[2] Ettenmoors
[3] Rivendell Waterfall
[4] Mithril Mine
[5] The Bridge of Khazad-dum
[6] Dimrill Dale
[7] Silverlode Banks
[8] Shores of Nen Hithoel
[9] Summit of Amon Hen

Pretty self-explanatory for the most part. The Prancing Pony pulls Aragorn, so make sure you bid enough to go first (the burdens should be no issue once you get Gandalf's Pipe out). Rivendell Waterfall can change the course of the game if you set up early enough. Mithril Mine is awesome if your Shadow is set up early with a couple scimitars and armories. Dimrill Dale is obvious with [Moria]. Silverlode Banks can only help as long as Aragorn is still around. Shores of Nen Hithoel pairs nicely with all our goblins.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #6
Expanded Format

FREE PEOPLES (33 cards):

Gimli, Bearer of Grudges w/ The Ring of Rings

Gandalf, Leader of Men (starting)
Aragorn, Strider (starting)
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver (starting)
Legolas, Greenleaf x3
Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk
Radagast, the Brown

Gandalf's Staff, Ash Staff
Glamdring, Foe-Hammer
Gandalf's Hat
Ring of Fury
Gimli's Battle Axe
Anduril, Sword That Was Broken
Aragorn's Bow

Saved from the Fire x4
Sent Back x2
Our Time x3
Watch and Wait

Servant of the Secret Fire x4
Deep in Thought x2
Fury of the White Rider x2

Starting with Gimli, Strider and WoBaS allows you to spot 3 of the 4 cultures you need for Friend of the Shirefolk. Burn Leader of Men with SftF to get Friend of the Shirefolk, Sent Back and one other card (usually Foe Hammer).

With Foe Hammer and Watch and Wait, together with Gandalf's high strength and Servent of the Secret Fire, burdens should fall off. Ash Staff allows Gandalf to wound minions when he wins fights.

The rest of the deck is centred on wounding. Greenleaf is the master of precombat wounding, and with extra copies he can easily be healed. Aragorn's Bow does the same.

Since this deck pumps out twilight, Our Time seems like a decent trick and gives incredible power to Deep in Thought and Fury of the White Rider, giving more pre-combat wounding and incredible one sided condition destruction. WoBaS and Gimli's Battle Axe finish off minions in the skirmish phase, at least early game.

Then you add 2 burdens with Gandalf's Hat to remove all the twilight you've just added, and move again, peeling off the burdens every time you fight. Radagast gives you the option of tripling for the win and can be used with Sent Back, and Saved from the Fire if you need to get more of Gandalf's stuff.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright, folks...it's voting time. Three Expanded decks and three Fellowship Block decks...this should be fun. ;D

Please have your votes in by Tuesday, September 2nd. Thanks again to our contestants for their hard work, and good luck to all!
Best regards,
Dáin

Although these decks, it seems that most of them simply are rainbow decks without really focussing on Friend of the Shirefolk. This is why I have rated 5 so high, as it focussed on more than one feature of Friend of the Shirefolk, not just his strength but also his signet.

Loved the competition, looking forward to the next round.

Same here. As a baseline I try to reward the use of the specific version first (Friend of the Shirefolk), and then the general use of the character (Gandalf). Since the decks all run the full number of races the lines are blurred a bit, but basically I chose 5 for using the Frodo signet, 6 for Gandalf-centered tricks, and 1 for using Trust Me as You Once Did.

I guess others would have different ways of looking at this challenge, though--one thing I do try to keep in mind is viability, so that's sort of a wild card. But hopefully they all balance out.

Absolutely...that's encouraged, actually. :) Just don't vote for yourself.

And my votes go:

6
1
4

So, with all votes I think we're going to get in, here's the breakdown:

Entry #5 - Dáin Ironfoot - 17
Entry #1 - Kralik - 10
Entry #6 - Anvar - 6
Entry #4 - MR. Lurtzy - 4
Entry #2 - Elessar's Socks - 4
Entry #3 - GarrisonofGondor - 1

And our total tally thus far in the contest:

Dáin Ironfoot - 24
Elessar's Socks - 19
Kralik - 15
NappyKorn - 15
Mr. Lurtzy - 8
Anvar - 6
Thranduil - 4
Gil-Estel - 4
GarrisonofGondor - 1

Remember, the winner of individual rounds isn't the end all and be all of this contest...only the person with the most cumulative points at the end is our winner. So if you aren't near the top yet, don't despair! Plenty of time left. And if you're not in the contest yet and want to join, there's still plenty of time for YOU to catch up as well! Come one, come all!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For now, though, time for Round 3...our first Shadow side challenge.

This challenge is inspired by a recent inquiry I saw on the forums: we will be focusing on some of the lesser-used Nazgul from Age's End. Many know and love Dark Horseman and/or Dark Shadow, but some of the other Nazgul have fallen by the wayside. So, design a card around any one (or more) of the following:

As with all decks in this contest, your deck must not just contain the card(S), but actually USE them in a useful way.

Rules more specific to this round:

- You can use as many or as few copies in your deck as you wish (within LOTR TCG rules, of course), but you must include at least one copy of one of these Nazgul in your deck.
- Because these cards are from the Age's End, your deck can be Standard format or Expanded format, but other formats (Movie, War of the Ring block, etc.) are obviously out. (I do not think Age's End cards can legally be used in Hunters Block, but if I am wrong, please let me know and I will add that to the list as well.) Please do NOT use Open, as I'd prefer to cut down on the possibilities of vastly overpowered or outright broken decks. Whichever format you choose, you may obviously include any other eligible cards in your deck, obeying the X-list, R-list, and other established rules for that format.
- A Free Peoples side and sitepath are purely optional. If they benefit your Shadow side in some way, then it's probably best to include them, even if you only include details on specific FP cards and/or sites as opposed to a full listing of cards. But the only requirement is a Shadow decklist, with as much or as little detail on the cards therein as you want to take the time to type up.

Though you can make your deck as bland as you wish, remember that this is a CONTEST, so the more detail and the more "flair" you include in your deck and descriptions, the better, more than likely, for your chances of winning that round. For this round, it's probably best to make the most of lots of Nazgul (for Dark Lord and/or Dark Threat) or lots of twilight (Dark Predator) or lots of [Wraith] possessions (for Dark Enemy), but that, of course, is entirely up to you.

We'll allow a little over a week for this round, though if all submissions are in before then, we'll obviously start voting early, and if more time seems to be needed, we'll talk about extending the deadline. But for now, please PM your final deck to me by Friday, September 12th.

If you have not signed up and still want to join, you can still offically join in this thread...but all you really HAVE to do is send me a deck by the deadline. Doesn't matter if you're officially in or out: I'll accept any deck I recieve. Don't be shy! :ninja:

If you have any questions or concerns with the deck, deadline, or anything else, please don't hesitate to PM me or e-mail me at DainIronfoot47 AT hotmail DOT com. ;)

Good luck, and happy deckbuilding! ;D
Best regards,
Dáin

This is why I have rated 5 so high, as it focussed on more than one feature of Friend of the Shirefolk, not just his strength but also his signet.
Same here.

With all respect, now that the round is over, I would like to point out that the Frodo signet was a significant choice in my deck for the multi-exertion pipeweed healing combo with Frodo's Pipe / Trust Me As You Once Did. ;)

Only one of the four is necessary, but you can include as many as you wish. There's an obvious connection between Dark Lord and Dark Threat, for example, so you could use both of them or just one. Entirely up to you.

And consider this a friendly reminder about getting decks in. ;) I have only one so far.

Wow, a great showing from Dain! But apparently he had two people working on it, himself and his Incognito personality. [-X (Just kidding!)

Yes, and it's one of the reasons I ranked yours in the top 3. TMaYOD was a convenient way of separating your deck from Dain's, and it was also something I tried to get working in my Expanded deck (before finally scrapping the idea and falling back to FtTH), so I was excited to see it there.

Honestly I could've rated them 5-1-6, but Anvar's creative use of Gandalf stood out for me--and it was an Expanded deck, built for a different environment--so I ended up sandwiching his between Dain's and yours. Sorry if I caused any hard feelings with the rankings. :-[

No, of course not! I was just protesting tongue-in-cheek. :)

Now I'm racking my brain to see if I can use these Nazzies in a deck before the deadline... I may run out of time. Tricky... :-k

Got six entries so far, including my own. I want to get this going ASAP, but I'll give until the end of today for any straggler decks to get in. With only six other decks, yours might stand a good chance in the competition even if it IS hastily thrown together. So throw one together and submit it! :P

Excellent! Two more people submitted decks yesterday, so that will make this our biggest round yet! ;D Thanks to all who submitted. Now let's get this show on the road!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #1
Expanded Format

FREE PEOPLES (31 cards):

Gimli, Bearer of Grudges w/ The One Ring, The Ring of Rings

Arwen, Fair Elf Maiden (starting)
Legolas, Greenleaf (starting)
Gandalf, Manager of Wizards x4
Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor x4

Woodhall Elf, Exile x2

Arwen's Bow x2
Arwen's Dagger x3
Gimli's Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon
Ring of Fury

Glimpse of Fate x3
Refuge x2
Shoulder to Shoulder x3

Attunement x4

Go second if given the choice so you can play forests for your Nazgul. The first order of the day is to draw lots of cards. The main drawing engine is Arwen's Dagger + Shoulder to Shoulder: Arwen exerts to draw 2 cards, Gimli exerts to heal Arwen, and then another Elf exerts to heal Gimli. Be careful about it, but since this happens in the maneuver phase, you should have some idea of what you'll be up against. Woodhall Elf also draws 3 cards when transferred.

Now that you have a card overflow, there are several options available to you. If Arwen's Bow is out, she can help Greenleaf pick off minions in the archery phase by discarding 2 [Elven] cards from hand for a directed wound each time. If Manager of Wizards is out, you can start placing cards back on top of your draw deck in the skirmish phase. Every 3 cards makes a minion skirmishing an unbound companion strength -3, unless your opponent can match them. When you lose initiative, Glimpse of Fate makes a minion strength -4 until the regroup phase.

Your trump card is Attunement (which can be retrieved by Gil-galad). Make sure to stack FP cards last, and then play it to provide a massive strength boost for an Elf (+2 for each card revealed). It also cycles the revealed cards to the bottom of your deck and out of the way of your Shadow.

Depending on how you want to play the deck, the FP and Shadow can work together to filter out FP cards, filter out Shadow cards, or cycle away either for later use. Which brings us to the Shadow:

SHADOW (31 cards):

The Witch-king, Dark Lord x4
Ulaire Attea, Black Predator x3
Ulaire Cantea, Faster Than Winds x4
Ulaire Nertea, Dark Horseman x4
Ulaire Enquea, Dark Threat x3
Ulaire Otsea, Seventh of the Nine Riders x3

Ithil Stone

Lost in the Woods x4
Moving This Way x2

Riders in Black x3

The Shadow can field huge minions. With cycling from the FP it shouldn't be difficult to get Dark Lord, Riders in Black, and 6 Nazgul in hand. During the Witch-king's skirmish, play Riders in Black to make him strength +6. Then pitch the Nazgul in hand to make him strength +1 apiece. At this point he's 26 strength, and factor in Lost in the Woods to raise it even higher.

Black Predator has a similar ability, this time removing [2] and discarding a [Wraith] card from hand to make him strength +3. Or you can try something sneaky with Dark Horseman; if he has the opportunity to attack the Ring-bearer, strength +6 from RiB (plus the LitW bonus) can lead to an early overwhelm.

Cantea FTW removes possessions to make winning skirmishes easier, Dark Threat punishes large fellowships, and Otsea SotNR (along with Ithil Stone) draws extra cards to potentially feed to the Nazgul.

Dark Lord and Black Predator (and Dark Threat, depending on the situation) also conveniently dump hand-clogging Nazgul from your hand after the fellowship phase, when Moving This Way is no longer available. Unless you're concentrating on your FP by cycling immediately with MTW, they allow you to get the bonuses from a [Wraith] hand while still making room for new cards next turn.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #2
Standard Format

SHADOW (31 cards):

Ulaire Lemenya, Dark Enemy x4
Ulaire Attea, Black Predator
Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter x2
Ulaire Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders x2
Ulaire Nertea, Black Horseman x3
The Witch-King, Captain of the Nine Riders x3
Winged Mount x2
Steed of Mordor x3
Black Flail
The Pale Blade, Sword of Flame
Nazgul Blade x2
Moving This Way x3
Hatred Stirred x2
Echo of Hooves x2

The basic principle is quite simple: get a very large Dark Enemy! There are a whole assortment of mounts and hand weapons available for use. Once in the discard pile, they become a boost to Lemenya and can be replayed using Echo of Hooves and Hatred Stirred.

There are also a variety of ways to get rid of those possessions without first playing them ranging from Black Predator and Duplicitous Specter to the Witch-King's muster and also the muster provided by Black Horseman and Steed of Mordor and the discarding for Winged Mount.

This should have a Free Peoples side that is both good at cycling and doesn't care if its combos get destroyed by discarding cards as a Shadow player, so I might go for a really simple [Rohan] or [Gondor] side where every Free Peoples card you get you play immediately.

Taking it into expanded also offers some interesting opportunities with Sword of Minas Morgul and Sword of Dol Guldur, not to mention Nazgûl Sword being a million times better than Nazgûl Blade...

As for sites, it doesn't hugely matter apart from the standard Nelya/Buckland Homestead stuff. The only restriction is you need some forests and battlegrounds for Echo of Hooves and Nazgûl Blade, but luckily most Nazgûl friendly sites are forests anyway. And Nelya makes site path manipulation all too easy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #3
Expanded Format

SHADOW (37 cards):

The Witch King, Dark Lord x4
Ulaire Enquea, Dark Threat x4
Ulaire Nertea, Dark Horseman x4
Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter x3
Ulaire Lemenya, Servant of the Shadow x3
Black Gate Sentry x2
Ulaire Lemenya, Eternally Threatening x4
Ulaire Nertea, Messenger of Dol Guldur x2

Morgul Gates x4

Moving This Way x3
Surrounded By Wraiths x2
Shapes Slowly Advancing x2

Basic strategy is play any minions and then discard minions from hand to cycle fast. Black Gate Sentry is easy wounding for cards like Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter and Ulaire Enquea, Dark Threat. Shapes Slowly Advancing and surrounded by wraiths work together. Either your opponent has to let you add a token to SSA or return a companion to hand-then SBW exhausts the companions for Sentry and Enquea or you get more twilight to play more nazgul. Morgul Gates simply makes it possible to play more minions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #4
Expanded Format

FREE PEOPLES (34 cards):

Frodo, Resolute Hobbit (10P121) w/ The One Ring, The Great Ring (19P1)

Aragorn, Heir to the Throne of Gondor (18R38)
Smeagol, Simple Stoor (13U55)

Deagol, Fateful Finder (13R46) x4

Aragorn's Bow, Ranger's Longbow (15R56)
Fishing Boat (13R48)
Sting, Elven Long Knife (18R113) x2
Gondorian Sword (7U98)
Salt from the Shire (11R171) x2

Gladden Homestead (13R49) x2
Safe Passage (11R50) x2
Don't Look at Them (6R39) x2
Nice Fish (15C46) x2
Spirit of the White Tree (17U34) x2
There's Another Way (12C40) x4

Nasty (7U64) x4
One Good Turn Deserves Another (11U49) x3

SHADOW (34 cards):

Ring of Terror (17R143) x2
Fat One Wants It (7R57) x2
Hatred Stirred (11U210) x2
Captured by the Ring (7C53) x4
Gollum, Her Sneak (13U50)
The Witch-king, Morgul King (7R221) x4
Ulaire Lemenya, Dark Enemy (19P37) x4
Black Flail (8R70) x3
The Pale Blade, Sword of Flame (11R214) x4
Nazgul Scimitar (7U203) x4
Winged Mount (8U83) x4

Basically use Winged Mount and Don't Look at Them to discard to the max (helping filter and such as well). Toss all your Nazgul possessions this way and eventually Lemenya is a fierce monster with the possiblity of being damage +1 with all the threats you can add. Gollum + CBTR + Fat One Wants It is your threat engine and if your freeps can handle it start removing the deagol from your discard pile to play gollum and add more threat with Fat One Wants It. If you are facing wounding (eg. Archery) winged mount can prevent those wounds of Lemenya. If no archery use Wikkie to take [Wraith] cards into hand when you play him. Hatred Stirred can get the Mounts and Rings back when Lemnya or Wikkie wins their fierce skirmishes as well. Ring puts Lemenya back into hand of the reconcile. Other possesion are there to either discard or help pump Witch-King up some. Use a forest, river, mountain, or plains site path to help choke with Safe Passage on the freeps side.

This deck should deck out to the max being 34/34 and having enormous discard potential on both sides so I might edit it with a few Lost in the Woods on the shadow side and add a few more cards on the freeps side.

ENTRY #5
Expanded Format

SHADOW (34 cards):

The Witch-King, Dark Lord x4
Ulaire Enquea, Dark Threat x2
Ulaire Nertea, Dark Horseman x2
Ulaire Cantea, Black Assassin
Ulaire Cantea, Faster than Winds
Ulaire Toldea, Wraith on Wings
Ulaire Toldea, Eight of the Nine Riders x2
Ulaire Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders x3
Ulaire Lemenya, Eternally Threatening
Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter
Morgul Skulker x4

Ithil Stone
Ring of Terror x4

Hatred Stirred
Moving this Way x2
Lost in the Woods x4

The main strategy is, of course, to strew the sitepath with forests, and then drop a WK with Ring of Terror (fierce d+1?) and tons of Nazzie recursion. The Nazzies I picked are sort of a package that does anything, with Nazzies that do various stuff, but can be discarded for the WK, the main point is just to wreak havoc with the wk running crazy, you've got tons of rule of 5 enforcers so he can do that, and some assistance beatdown if necessary from other guys, he doesn't have to be the main thing, but he's definitely there to cycle. Oh yeah, Hatred Stirred and Morgul Skulker can really shuffle Nazgul back into the deck so that if you can get a filter freeps, like Gamling's Horn, you can run the deck off of reshuffled cards. Send the Nazzies that work back in the deck, if you hit gold, drop 'em, otherwise, slam WK style, LITW and discarding to bang.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #6
Expanded Format

FREE PEOPLES (36 cards):

Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom w/ The One Ring. The Ring of Rings

Legolas, Son of Thranduil (starting)
Duilin, Ranger from Blackroot Vale (starting)
Smeagol, Poor Creature (starting)
Arwen, Staunch Defender x3

Uruviel, Woodland Maid

Nenya, Ring of Adamant x3
Galadriel's Silver Ewer
Phial of Galadriel
Gwemegil
Arwen's Bow
Sword of the Fallen x2
Elven Bow x2
Gondorian Blade
Ranger's Cloak

The Last Alliance of Elves and Men
No Stranger to the Shadows
The Saga of Elendil
Safe Passage
Don't Look At Them
Secluded Homestead
Gondor Bowmen x2
Natural Cover x2

Feathered x4
A Ranger's Versatility x2

The FP side does a little choking (partly from being a small fellowship but mostly from NSttS and Safe Passage) and a good amount of archery, so if all goes well you won't be skirmishing too often. If you do, Duilin has 10 strength at most sites here (as you'll see shortly) and the Gondorian Blade, so he should be able to defeat or at least survive most minions that are around to skirmish. Arwen becomes beastly later on: with your sites out, minions can be as much as -6 strength going up against her tanked out (Gwemegil and Arwen's Bow) 9 strength damage +1. If that's STILL not enough, Feathered combined with your archery makes for an AWESOME pump. If archery doesn't do enough, A Ranger's Versatility makes for a lethal combo with Feathered instead.

Not a perfect FP side, especially since you're soft against burdens early on, but should be fun and more than hold its own against most decks.

Wait, why are we weak against burdens early on? Because you'll be bidding 2 or 3 to ensure you Shadow side goes first and lays down the sitepath for your opponent. Speaking of which....

SHADOW (36 cards):

Ulaire Lemenya, Dark Enemy x4
Ulaire Toldea, Black Shadow x4
Ulaire Attea, Black Predator
Ulaire Nertea, Black Horseman
Ulaire Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders x3
Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter x2
Ulaire Otsea, Seventh of the Nine Riders

Sword of Minas Morgul x2
Sword of Dol Guldur x2
Fell Beast x3
Winged Mount
Nazgul Blade x3
Ithil Stone

Hatred Stirred x2
Flung Into the Fray

Dark Approach x4
Foul Clutches

The point here is rather simple: play and/or discard possessions to make Dark Enemy huge, then pull back the possessions you need with Hatred Stirred, stack Lemenya on FItF, and rinse and repeat each site to beat the fellowship down.

Black Shadow is here mainly to pull back Dark Approach over and over to make our Nazzies cheap and save twilight for the rather expensive Sword of Minas Morgul (for Lemenya) and Sword of Dol Guldur (for Toldea...he helps his own cause!). Those swords turn Lemenya into a damage +1 beatstick and Toldea into a troublesome condition remover, as well as boosting their strength, so I think the [2] cost of each is MORE than worth it.

The Fell Beasts and Winged Mount not only play for free and further boost strength, but they can be used to unclog your hand, discarding any unneeded [Wraith] possessions along the way. (On the FP side, by the way, Arwen also contributes towards this with Gwemegil and Arwen's Bow and Poor Creature has a built-in method to do it as well!) Black Horseman can make sure Winged Mount is free and further boosts any Nazzie bearing either mount. Black Predator ALSO has a built-in discarding ability that can boost him further, and Foul Clutches can also be a nasty surprise to spring at the right time if you have some possessions to discard from hand.

Both Otseas help bring more cards (and hopefully [Wraith] possessions) into hand each turn, as does the Ithil Stone. The Nazgul Blades make for good discarding fodder but can also be a nice boost if you decide to play them since most of our sites are forests. To help ensure we DO have forests, we also have Third of the Nine Riders to control the path if something goes awry.

And that just leaves, of course, the oft-mentioned sitepath.

SITES:

(0) The Angle
(0) Woody-end
(0) Buckland Homestead
[1] Hill of Sight
[2] Caras Galadhon
[2] Mere of Dead Faces
[3] Dammed Gate-stream
[3] Old Forest Road
[3] Trollshaw Forest

Six forests in all, which clearly helps both sides of our deck. The Angle and Woody-end in particular help our Shadow side, as the former can possibly snag more possessions for our Nazzies and Woody-end can be used to grab Lemenya if we need him. Old Forest Road is awfully nice with our Elves. Buckland Homestead is included here for its obvious Nazzie help, but if playing an opponent that you know doesn't run a lot of conditions, could easily be substituted for another forest like East Road or a different site that could help one of our sides out (like Fortress of Orthanc or Fords of Isen). Mere of Dead Faces is nice with Smeagol, and Dammed Gate-stream should be used ASAP to grab Safe Passage (or, if you already have Safe Passage, Don't Look At Them instead, which is good at discarding MORE cards and pairs especially well with A Ranger's Versatility ).

ENTRY #7
Standard Format

SHADOW (38 cards):

The Witch King, Dark Lord x3
Ulaire Enquea, Dark Threat x3
Ulaire Attea, Dark Predator x3
Ulaire Lemenya, Dark Enemy x3
Ulaire Cantea, Faster Than Winds x2
Mordor Veteran x2

Ring of Rancor x4
Shadowy Mount x3

They Came From Mordor x2
They Feel The Precious x2
A Shadow Fell Over Them x4
Ghastly Host x3
Morgul on The March

There Came A Cry x3

The stategy is simple. Add tons of threats. Stop them from moving with Ghastly Host. Overwhelm with Mordor Veteran and then they have lots of wounds. =D> \:D/

Any questions? ???

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTRY #8
Expanded Format

SHADOW (35 cards):

The Witch-king, Dark Lord x4
Ulaire Enquea, Dark Threat x4
Ulaire Cantea, Faster than Winds
Ulaire Cantea, Black Assassin
Ulaire Lemenya, Assailing Minion
Ulaire Lemenya, Servant of the Shadow
Ulaire Lemenya, Eternally Threatening
Ulaire Nelya, Thrall of the One
Ulaire Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders x2
Ulaire Nertea, Servant of the Shadow
Ulaire Nertea, Dark Horseman
Ulaire Nertea, Thrall of the One
Ulaire Otsea, Thrall of the One
Ulaire Otsea, Seventh of the Nine Riders
Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter
Morgul Skulker x3

Ithil Stone x2
Ring of Terror x3

Hatred Stirred x2

All Blades Perish x3

The WK and Dark Threat use wraiths to pump or to destroy large fellowships. Ithil Stone gives you more cards to work with every shadow phase. While Morgul Skulker, Ring of Terror and Hatred Stirred all get your minions back from discard pile or from play for repeated uses. Meanwhile the Ring of Terror can make the WK damage +1, and you may even get the threats to use it repeatedly. All Blades Perish is just because a wounding deck, like knights or RBR would probably massacre the WK, who relies on winning fights.

The rest of the deck is made up of singletons of some of the most powerful nazgul in the game, that are nevertheless most useful in particular circumstances. The idea is to burn the wraiths that aren't especially useful at the moment, while recycling those that are good against your opponent's deck. Note that I have not used any Attea or Toldea, focussing on slightly fewer different Nazgul to make the WK's text more likely to give strength +2:

Ulaire Cantea, Faster than Winds (for large fellowships/possession discard)
Ulaire Cantea, Black Assassin (for large fellowships/low resistance)
Ulaire Lemenya, Assailing Minion (for flooded pools)
Ulaire Lemenya, Servant of the Shadow (turn wraiths into condition discard)
Ulaire Lemenya, Eternally threatening (rainbow)
Ulaire Nelya, Thrall of the One (archery/wounding)
Ulaire Nelya, Third of the Nine Riders (site path fixing/condition discard)
Ulaire Nertea, Servant of the Shadow (low resistance)
Ulaire Nertea, Dark Horseman (dual culture fellowships)
Ulaire Nertea, Thrall of the One (site 2/archery)
Ulaire Otsea, Thrall of the One (archery)
Ulaire Otsea, Seventh of the Nine Riders (one companion exhausted)
Ulaire Otsea, Duplicitous Specter (wounds spread around)

The FP would probably be Dwarves with Gandalf, Saved from the Fire. This would give a powerful level of card draw and filtering to set up hands that are bursting full of Nazgul.

Meanwhile the site path includes Buckland Homestead and more evil sites for repeated play with Third of the Nine Riders.

Alright, folks. It's that time again...voting time! ;D

Please have your votes in by Friday, September 19th...but we can extend it a bit if that's too soon.

Thanks again to our contestants for their hard work, and good luck to all!

Hmmm...kind of low voting turnout thus far.

Please vote, folks! Reward these good people for their hard work!

Ah, good catch! :gp: Fixed now. That's probably my error rather than the submitter...not everyone listed their format, and so I had to go through and assign one for some of them.

Thanks, and thanks for the vote.

Dáin

Wow, have I messed up. :-[ I blame it on my mind being on my impending surgery....

Uh...I forgot to mark down whose deck was whose, so I don't know which names to assign points to. #-o I've been combing around the last couple days trying to figure out where I marked that down, and I can't find anything, so I think I plum forgot. So, um, I guess if people can PM me and tell me which deck is theirs? I think that's how we'll have to do things.

Sorry, folks. What a foolish blunder. :(

Dáin

Sorry sorry sorry! :-[

No, not dead. Just been sitting on the back burner for a few days, like most online activity for ol' Uncle Dáin has had to. :-S

Looks like six of the eight decks have been identified. If you submitted a deck for the last round and haven't reported in which is yours yet (since I lost my list #-o), please do so ASAP so we can get this moving forward again. Thanks!
Best regards,
Dáin
